I bought an ex track day rental Ferrari F430 which was cheap as it didnt come with a complete engine or gearbox. Ive since managed to build a F430 engine but now its time to rebuild a fire damaged gearbox that i bought from ebay. If i dont manage rebuild it then the budget for this build is out the window.

As a mechanical engineer in power stations, we have a lot of gear boxes, you need to find out back lash settings in the diff & gear box, you normally change the spacers to get the correct backlash so you will need to find the information somehow, getting it wrong means the gearbox & diff will have problems when it gets warm & could wreck the gearbox etc, well done for putting the gearbox together from a pile of bits, I hope it works ok for you🤞
@johnblackwell5805
@johnblackwell5805 Жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing! With swapping the bearings between the 2 boxes Matt, it will likely change the pre-load on the diff. Good news is you can adjust it by just removing the diff, so the rest of the ‘box doesn’t need to come to bits…. Just the diff cover etc. a g’box refurb place might be kind enough to advise or even if you paid them to set the diff spacing you’ve still saved £££££

Hi Mat excellent effort. Not a Ferrari guy but I have a lot of experience building gearboxes for another top manufacturer. Gearbox crown wheel and pinions are made as matched items. You often see a colour dot on the gears say red or blue which will match. So both items will have the same colour. I'd use the pinion shaft from the toasty gearbox it should be fine. This is likely why you are getting so much resistance when trying to turn it rather than it needing oil. The pinion is tight against the crown wheel not leaving enough clearance. It'll go boomski otherwise.
@ollywayman2990
@ollywayman2990 Жыл бұрын
I thought he did use the secondary shaft and crown wheel from the fire damaged box so they were paired up? Only the first motion shaft that was original?
@ocavant
@ocavant Жыл бұрын
The only thing he did not do is set the pinion to ring/crown backlash. That could come back to haunt him, but since he is using the matched set from the toasty box, he might be fine. There might also be a setup procecedure for the limited slip clutch. Without a manual and clearance specs they are just guessing obviously. You could do some paint marking and guessing which would get them in the ballpark, as a good patern is a good patern regardless of what the factory numbers say. Why should Ferrari be able to keep this information hidden? Does the UK have a right to repair law like we do here in the US??

What's up Mat, mechanical engineer here I was literally about to comment that a transmission has a good bit of friction in neutral and will still spin if no weight counteracting the load from the engine but looks like you figured it out lol. When building my SLC I noticed it in action too with my car on the lift. Love your content man!
@esdar66g95
@esdar66g95 Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, i think y ou should check your ring gear to pinion clearances, you have mixed parts from 2 gearboxes including the case that holds it all in place, all those spacers and shims you put on each side have an effect on how tight they are when put together, notice you have your pinion already there in the middle and then you are inserting the diff front the side and the teeth engage, how deep you put the differential effects how much theyre biting eachother, you can check the clearance by using a paint called prusian blue, or grease, and also once its put together you could check your clearance with a gauge, if you want to eyeball it when its all put together you should be able to grab both axle outputs and move them back and forth and notice a very minimal slack, but it has to be there if it doesnt that differential will grind itself to crumbs. hope you notice !!
@DuWainAke
@DuWainAke Жыл бұрын
I can attest that checking the ring & pinion for proper mesh is a very important step. Many years ago I mixed & matched parts in a Corvair transaxle (yes, I know; why Corvair) & did not check or adjust the mesh. The ring & pinion blew up after just a few hundred miles (must have been all that horsepower). A critical step!

19:44 That clutch plate is a limited slip differential, is in many sport cars and off-road vehicles to avoid 1 wheel sliding in a hard acceleration on low grip surface or on a turn, so it works like a normal differential at low wheel speed difference, but if a tire starts spinning faster that it should, it frictions and send power to the other wheel to distribute the power evenly.

19:35 - This is a limited slip differential. A differential works shifting the torque to the wheel with less resistance. This is used to align the wheel speed in curves as the inner wheel will have a smaller trajectory to follow, thus needing to spin less. If there was no differential, the wheels would fight each other as the one outside the curve wants to spin more. The issue with racing cars is that, as you roll the car, the weight will be shifted to the outter wheels. This will increase the resistance of the outter wheels and the torque will be shifted to the inner wheels. Now imagine an extreme case where the car is rolling so much, that the inner wheel is lifting from the ground. With an open differential, all the torque will be sent to that floating wheel, as its the one with the least resistance. Meaning, you will lose all your torque to push the car forward, thus losing time, until the car reduces its speed,the wheel touch the ground again and the engine start pushing the car forward again. In racing cars, in order to prevent that, you can limited slip differentials. Meaning. These plates will not let one wheel spin 100% and the other 0%.depending on the amount of these plantes, geometry, material, pressure (if hydraulic) etc, you might have a 20%-80% differential - 70-30%. Etc. In some cases like off road application, you can have a blocking system which will actually make it 50-50 so you don't get stuck in the mud for example.

The only problem with this video is you just can't tell how long they have been working and stressing on one part. It could be 18hours into the day and Mat is still smiling. So impressive. I would have been rocking in the corner crying for my mom half an hour in.

My only issue is the metallurgy of the burnt parts (especially gears). I'm thinking embrittlement of the steel which would lead to eventual failure of the gearbox. I guess the next owner can always figure that out as long as they dont wreck it after a couple days of driving.

I've had the same kind of problem with a small bike, where i had to rebuild a gearbox (I didn't take it apart) and after a lot of hours i finally rebuild it but i wouldn't turn, like it was in gear. Then i put oil in and it worked just fine. Sometimes u gotta trust the process. Btw. love that mechanic team, being serious while having fun. Love the content, keep it up Mat and he's team!

Good to see you giving it a go. The tight circlip was probably due to the shims. You need to find the spec for end float/clearance. I bet it's a bit tight since you had to "force" the circlip on. Again, very impressed with you going for it, keep at it!

Admire this challenge - working together as a team to achieve the end goal of getting a Ferrari going again when it''s in bits and pieces. Well done mate. Fair play and continue to have every success in whatever you're building. Whatever comes next, I'll be watchingf for sure as you've made damaged car resurrection a sport mate. Congratulations.

This was awesome to watch. It's evident that you may not have countless years of mechanical experience, but your logically reasoned approach to a job like this makes up for it. My dad gets a few projects like this in his garage when a car is ripped apart by clueless mechanics and gets delivered in a bunch of random plastic boxes, it requires calm nerves and patience to not get overwhelmed by it.

Mat ..... you and your Dad and the team continue to amaze and inspire me, and I've been in the trade professionally for 40 years, you never give up, you do it all with a smile ( even if I'm sure sometimes you wish that camera wasn't watching every nut and bolt ) and you always find a way ! ....it may be a Ferrari, but like any engine and gearbox it's just a huge jigsaw puzzle, and some have more pieces than others as you're finding out and sharing, total respect to you, "He who dares wins" was never more apt .... All the best to you

Watching this video just now I am in total awe at what you are achieving with this build .To tackle something so complex without the mechanical knowledge of a gearbox specialist is to me scary as hell but good on you for trying hope it works and look forward to seeing it when it does .My mot s due on Friday and need new discs and pads all round and I think that is a big job

crashed cars are easy as long as theres no frame damage. but mat gets failed project cars (murcielago,ferrari), structural damage cars (gt3, m5) or cars that are just so expensive that you really need the skills maschines and budge to do it yourself and cheaping out where it is possible but using quality when neccesary. Mat is a great guy, so entertaining!
