Just want to say your video helped me a lot with my own rebuild. My t56 is a bit different than your since it is out of a 2006 z06 vette but internally they are simular except mine came with a one pc countershaft. I totally mirrored the way you worked on the transmission. I took it one step further and covered a 6ft folding table with cardboard and shadow boxed and labeled every part, and wrote notes next to the parts that identified how it came apart. My 5/6 drive gear also came off by hand and I sent my mainshaft to TX Drivetrain performance. They due a spray weld and re-machine for$100 plus shipping. My rebuild was a bit more expensive than your since my goal was to fix my reverse syncro, that was almost gone, and do a full stage 2 upgrade that will hold the +600hp I'm making. Again, thanks for the time and effort on your video.

Thanks for the video. Great job! I just finished up my refresh. I was glad to see the comment that it was shifting fine after a few thousand miles. Great detail! I wouldn't have attempted this without a solid video and this one was exactly what I needed.

Just put my rebuilt trans in, so far running good for the past 2 days. Thanks to this vid! Shipping was the biggest pain point of the whole process, and having keys fall out 2-3 times while trying to put the shift forks and main shaft together was annoying but I figured out how to hold it properly lol. For shimming, I talked to Texas Drivetrain Performance and they told me a method to shim without using a dial indicator and just based on feel.

Enjoyed the two videos. A potential customer recently contacted me about rebuilding his T56. Told him I needed to “research” them a little bit. The research is watching someone else build one to see if I’ve got the proper tooling. 😂

On the 5/6 snap ring the manual says to install it opposite of what you have done. Great video by the way! I can’t believe this doesn’t have more views! This series is the best T56 how to on KZbin. Nice job.

I would guess the worn out synchronizer teeth are from either a leaking clutch slave or worn out master. When my master was bad it would work perfect and then go to the floor after a high RPM pull and cause my to grind the next gear. Great video!!! Very valuable information you can't find anywhere else. Makes me want to rebuild my T56 this winter
@TheBudgetMindedMotorist Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I agree, worn or week clutch hydraulics would definitely lead to synchro damage and wear. A lot of my car's history is unknown as I picked it up with 200k miles, but past clutch issues certainly could have contributed to what's in the video.

I guarantee this series will be the most watched on your channel, the other rebuild videos hide like 80% of the work lol. I swapped a f-body t56 into my b-body and trying to be budget I went with a used one, put it in the car and find reverse was gone. At that point I just wanted the car running and ended up paying a lot more than I should have to get it fixed. Like 2 months later I feel like I wasn't able to get into 3rd gear without resistance and some just odd behaviors that I wasn't feeling before. For me to go the magnum route is so much more money, but at the same time if I pay for the labor to get this one fixed I will spend just as much as I would if I just resold it and bought the magnum. Which leaves one option, to rebuild it myself. Plan is within the next two weeks do a tear down and inspection, see what needs to be replaced and order it up. Do need to buy a hydraulic press and some snap ring pliers.

9.9 on the rtv and reading the instructions. Gotta let it flash over then finish tightening. I usually go 24 hrs. Also i use the special rtv for automatic transmissions by permatex #81180 since the trans takes mercon 5 i think. Might go with amsoil tho.

How did it turn out? Still shifting? I have a 2000 SS so wondering if it will be the same as it looks like you have a LT1? But great video. Love how you did this for the first time and really put a lot of thought and approached it like a total pro. When the first video came on and you said first timer, I thought it would be great as I will be likely trying this for my first time? What was the overall all costs? I’m planning a turbo build so bought my car as a project and I’ll be damned if I let anyone but myself ruin it 😂. But great great great video. I truly appreciate the time and detail you put into this.

Keen to know where I can order the counter shaft extension for 5 and 6 gear. I have a Holden VE SS with the T56 6speed manual. Reason being ive lost 5th & 6th gear, but still have reverse. The gears lock in 5 & 6 just doesn't engage. Its as if it were in neutral. Just Revs out. Any help or information would be good. Thanks
@TheBudgetMindedMotorist2 жыл бұрын
I haven't been able to find anyone who makes new replacement counter shaft extensions. Sometimes there are used ones available on eBay. It's possible the splines for the 5/6 cluster sheared from the main shaft. If that's the case a new main shaft should be easier to find.
@huglferdr2 жыл бұрын
Ok that is very helpful information, I will look around on ebay for used. I think you are right might have to look at getting a main shaft. Thanks for the info dude much appreciated.

what bearings need to be replaced to resolve the common issue of 4th gear popping out when the transmission goes in and out of being under load? everything I read said this is from a worn bearing in the trans that causes 4th to pop out

Hey man my car got stuck in 3rd any ideas and how much did you spend in parts
@TheBudgetMindedMotorist Жыл бұрын
I believe being stuck in gear usually means broken shift keys within the synchro assembly. All in for parts I spent about $600 if I remember right. Was expecting to spend closer to $300 but replacing 2nd gear and the synchro sliders added up to more. I also used stock style parts so it would have been a little more if I used billet keys and such.

Hmm re-watching from 1:07:00 to 1:08:00 ish I noticed that the washer you put after 6th gear on the counter shaft extension looks like part #115, but in the manual and in your dissassembly video that washer sits on the top of the 6th gear needle bearing.
@TheBudgetMindedMotorist2 жыл бұрын
😳 are you sure it wasn't part 108? I suppose it's possible I could have gotten 115 and 108 mixed up, but I can't tell for sure in the video. So far everything feels fine regarding 6th so I'll see what happens I suppose.
@mubashircheentavida2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBudgetMindedMotorist Yea it's probably fine tbh. I picked up disassembled t56 for cheap and practicing how to shim that one and so far it's pretty straight forward. I do think that the #115 spacer was not in the right position before the 6th gear needle bearing. looking at the wear pattern of the bearing inside my the 6th gear race, its not in the same position without the #115 spacer. Which is not a huge deal, but means the bearing will ride in a different position. The thrust washer #108 was left on the counter shaft during disassembly and reassembly videos. So anyone watching this video, don't forget that washer like I did. Luckily I caught it early. These videos helped a lot.

Great video I watched both parts and I feel like I learned a lot I have a 95 T/A with the T56. I don't know if this is normal or not but when I get going from a dead stop in first gear especially if I'm still at very low RPM I would say like 1300-1400 for a quick second it makes this sound like rocks in a can of coffee being shaking up. I used to have an 87 T/A with a T5 and it did the same exact thing. All my forward gears feel great! The only other issue is once in a while it'll pop out of reverse. The car only has 84,000 original miles I purchased it from the original owner and older gentleman who always garage kept it, How close am I to needing a rebuild would you say?
@TheBudgetMindedMotorist2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That's awesome finding a 95 with so few miles! Mine makes quite a bit of noise at low rpm as well. Rattles like crazy at 1k-1200 RPM or so. I've seen a lot of forum posts describing the same thing so from what I know, it's pretty common. As long as it's smooth going into gear I wouldn't worry a whole lot about the noise. Popping out of reverse is kind of a bummer but mine did that for a while before I finally got sick of it. popping out will eventually wear the sychro slider and gear, but it might be ok for a while as long as it isn't happening super often.
