I’ve got a 4th gen Firebird and it does go into reverse, but its a little tricky. This video was very reassuring, I’m confident I could do this myself within my budget. Great video, well edited to show the important parts. Respect!

I appreciate that! I’ve watched some other videos where people actually grind down some of the shift fork to get it to engage properly. I think it’s possible in the f body to do this with the transmission in the car as you don’t have the diff hanging off the back in that car. Good luck!

Thanks man! Good luck, there’s another fix I’ve seen where guys grind the reverse fork, but mine didn’t seem to need it. Replaced the pads and it was much better.

would you mind putting info on part numbers of the items you replaced? I have the exact thing you had going on with my 2000 C5 coupe. I just bought it a month ago and the slave cyl was trash when I test drove the car... that's all fixed now with new clutch components (2k repair) and just starting to drive the car. come to find out the reverse is grinding every time I use it... I can force and hold the shifter in position and feather the clutch and get the car to move, but it's not "right" and if I release pressure, she grinds bigtime. Super good video, brother. Gives me confidence to give it a whirl myself. Two thumbs up!

Part number for what I replaced are as follows: 312976369369 - replacement snap ring kit ZMT56-40-reverse hub and slider 12523049- bronze blocker ring 112tr-t56b- bronze shift fork pads 1386-156-005 wave spring washer I got the car back together about a month ago, the grinding is gone, but I am now getting a slight clunking noise going into reverse. I realize I did not flip the reverse gear around when re-assembling and I’m thinking that’s my issue. Unfortunately I will have to tear the car apart again to diagnose. I will probably end up just replacing the gear. I put an update in my last video, and will document this new issue when time allows. Good luck!

I’d be happy to have a clunk but a functional reverse. Mine is almost identical to your grinding reverse video.

It’s definitely better, but frustrating that it’s still not perfect. I have a few more projects lined up, but as soon as I can I’m taking it apart again to find out what I did wrong.

I just checked my eBay purchases. Most of the items aren’t listed anymore, or descriptions have changed, but I can still see what I paid. The hub and slider was $92 and the seller on eBay was superior auto parts. Sorry, I know that doesn’t help much.

Doesn’t pulling the welding wire out screw up the bead of sealant?

I did get a little sealant on filler rod when I pulled it out but not much. The cover wasn’t all the way against the case when I pulled it out. I don’t think it was enough to seriously disrupt it. I put a pretty decent bead on it as well. Cars been back together for a few weeks now with no leaks so I think it’s good.

Hey having transmission probs on my c5z its grinding going into second, if i adjust the shifter position i can get it to not grind anny more, but it wont go into reverse anny more, this video made me think maybe i have the same issue, you think its possible or am i tripping? i got the car a few months ago with his issue.

If it’s not grinding anymore, I’d lean more towards a slave cylinder issue or the reverse lockout solenoid. How did you adjust the shifter position? I have an mgw and they include a shifter alignment tool.

@automotivechaos I have the stock shifter, just loosen the 3 bolts on the base and use a 1/8 drill bit from the round part and insert it where the oem lock pin should be( mine is missing) then I give it a good wiggle and pull it towards the back of the car and start tightening the bolts.( That's how I got it to stop grinding) and to adjust it so reverse goes in I do the same but just wiggle it and lock it. I've read on the forums about air in the master and slave cylinder but discarded it, as most people tell me it's bad Sincros. I really want to avoid taking the trans out, so gonna give it a go. Thanks for your input!

Brake clean makes you smell colors, but you're using it in a confined space with the door closed 😂

All that work for a $15 piece of plastic. Yeah, that's never fun having to do hours of tear down and reassembly just to fix a part the factory cheaped out on. Make it last long enough to make it until the end of the warranty, lol VT247
