i think your first idea of the slack oilpump chain is probably your best bet, it looked too loose and would cause a noise

I genuinely don’t think you have an issue, it’s probably the slack in that chain, and the sound deadening allowing you to hear it more. You’ve gone down a rabbit hole and like you said got a bit lost. You have to think logically about it. See if you can find another 240, take that sound deadening off a see if it sounds the same first

You can get that oil chain tighter by putting shims under it, BMW sells these oil pump shimms that come between engine block mating surface and oil pump

Maybe it’s the Piston gudgeon pin.. take each piston to tdc right at the top , in the spark plug hole , stick a screw driver or a solid rod that fits down there and press hard down once on the piston , you should hear a clunk noise if it’s faulty

If you see the sweat, tears and still have made only progression to the fact the "knock" is still there, and after all this you are determined to fix it, that shows character and willing to learn. Could the crank shaft be bent ever so slightly? Only time will tell. Good luck in pulling the engine, look forward to the next videos. "It is a hard knocked life"

Hello, I think your problem may be due to the oil pressure, I don't know how the B58 works in this case with the chain tensioner, but having an inadequate oil pressure would stop tensioning due to pressure and make a small noise, I don't particularly think it's the crankshaft, connecting rods or crankcases, I think the problem is oil pressure.
@xLeeVine
@xLeeVine Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim! So i heard there is that typical problem were the oil pressure created by the oil pump is to low in idle rpm. That leads to the problem that the hydraulic chain tensioner does not tension the chain proplerly. That would also explain why it goes away after slightly reffing it. The oilpump rotates faster -> higher oil perssure -> hydraulic tensioner fully tentions the chain -> no more noises. And it would also explain why there is no noise while cold starting: rpm is typically also higher than normal idle rpm. (You said there was no noise during cold start and reving on your ig story). Greetings from Germany.

Brooo, I feel so bad for you!😐 We bought a car at an auction...it wasn't this nice, it was an Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI, a diesel, and it had a horrible sound. We thought it was a chain, and we opened it up the timing chain guides were all messed up, so we replaced everything except for the timing chain gears, because they looked good and we wanted to save some money🤦‍♂️. The sound came back as soon as we started it.😢 We even replaced the flywheel, nothing helped. We did the chain again, this time with the gears, and the sound went away!🎊 One of the gears had play in it, and that's what made the knocking sound. What I'm trying to say it, don't give up, you'll figure it out eventually!💪 Greetings from Slovenia!🇸🇮

Pull off the piston rod caps, push the piston toward TDC to give you room around the crank shaft. Take the vernier caliper and place it on the crank journal like your taking a measurement of it, slowly rotate the crankshaft and watch the measurement on the screen of the vernier caliper it should stay the same throughout rotation of the crankshaft. If the measurement goes up or down then you know that the crank journal is “egg” shaped and not perfectly round. This will help eliminate replacing the crankshaft or just replacing the piston rod bearings.

Beemer Oil pump chains are all like that , which honestly seems rather crap , If your going off number 1 cylinder being at the back and the noise coming from front 5/6 then no idea. There’s nothing up front as far as I’m aware. If we’re at the bell housing end then dual mass issues or torque converter . Maybe a bent rod or damage due to bad injectors . Does sound like a rod is hitting something , maybe piston squirters bent and catching the rod unless it’s transferring from the top down to the sump . Ps always grease the oil pump internally , helps it prime so no oil starvation on startup .
