If you are considering doing this yourself, take note that this guy has a full garage with every kind of tool in it, and a staff of guy's whose labor he is not including in his accounting of the cost of this repair. Labor at a regular mechanic starts at $100/hr at a really really cheap place. The diagnostic tools he is using can cost thousands of dollars, not to mention the lift, engine hoist, and all of the other tools. If you don't have all of those things at your disposal it seems like it would definitely be cheaper to just buy a car that wasn't crashed. I'm pretty sure the reason it was at auction in the first place is because the insurance appraiser had already determined that it was cheaper to just buy another car than it would be to repair this one and those people are not stupid. They are the best in the world at estimating repair cost. On top of that is the fact that this car has lost a ton of value already because of the status of its title. This car was totaled and therefore has a salvage title. It doesn't matter how perfect the repair is, or even that it's been upgraded. The car will never be as valuable as an identical car that wasn't salvaged. Just some things to keep in mind for guys who are getting inspired to get their own project cars. Be realistic, don't make an emotional purchase.

Cheap places starting mechanics out at $100 an hour?
@emmijames35811 ай бұрын
@@fluffythenut4615 No. Cheap mechanic shop that charge $100/hr minimum, for labor. It does not start its mechanics at $100/hr wage. It charges its customers minimum of $100/hr to do fix their cars but pays its mechanics around $25/hr to fix the customers cars.

You and Chris the thing I do in the morning when I get up check KZbin to see if you’ve dropped any videos you and Chris, and a few others absolutely amaze me at your ability to fix these cars I’m so jealous and I wish I was younger so I could go to school and learn the things that you do. I know it’s DIY but you guys still amaze me I know you use the Internet a lot and they didn’t have that when I was a kid at 16 with a 54 Chevy, I have a 325 Mercedes all these problems and I’m disabled mentally they say I have dementia so I can’t fix my car and I can’t afford to fix it. I cant believe I watched the whole thing so early in the morning now haha. I personally don't think it was 'worth' it in the end but the knowledge that you gained and seeing you learn was definately worth it. You fixed the car cosmetically as well and thats a bonus. I think if it was just for the car probably not but if you take in everything that youve learned and done it was well worth it. I love how you are so brilliantly positive over everything. Anyway, keep it up.

I agree - the video was really entertaining and hopefully provides income for the poster but definitely not worth it. The comparisons with other M5 prices are misleading. There is a Cat-S 2019 M5 Competion on Autorader at the moment. Low mileage, repaired, etc. Price £43K - so apart from the entertainment value, you could have saved all the time and effort on the repairs and gone straight to the end just by buying one.

Might not be worth it for us mere mortals, but it's gold for content creators ;) He even gave it away at the end... If he had bought a non-crashed car, we would have not enjoyed watching this as much as we did. Awesome series!

The kind of damage Mat repairs, even the manufacturers of the cars wouldn't touch them with a 10 yard stick. His passion is on another level.

Man watching this gave me inspiration, I'm also into rebuilding high end cars. Its expensive, challenging, but with this new job Im getting, I'll be able to get enough to start doing my own project cars! This is also one of my favorite gen M5s! Hopefully I can get my hands on one sometime, awesome rebuild Mat!!! I'm gonna go look at the Porsche video next!

Amazing to watch and see how far motors have come. Now I see why the prices are so high and wonder if there really is the need for such massive amounts of tech. I remember the days of whipping out engines in the blink of an eye. With everything covered up as it is, it looks like days just to find the engine 😂😂🤣 Great job 👍

Great video. Impressive work. M5 looks superb. Love all the mods, good choice Mat. I imagine the insurance companies add a top up on premiums, on what is already pretty pricy to insure, but with the way it turned out in the end, I’m sure its worth it. Lucky winner. I may be just a smudge jealous. Apart from the car, the video looks as professional as anything on mainstream tv. Nice genuine personality and good presenter. Liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work Mat.

The fact that these car companies are allowed to sell structural parts, but can't tell you how to put it together is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously this is done to force people to have the dealerships fix the steuctural parts instead. But thats not what ends up happening. What ends up happening is people who dont know what they're doing end up doing bad repair jobs which end up putting unsafe cars on the road. But ghe car companies would never care about that. The money is way too important.

Question, when you give away a car. Do you also give them a warranty? lol Just kidding. You did an outstanding job and you made his day, week, month and year.

I have been a heavy collision and high end restoration and vehicle modification master tech and welder/fabricator master tech working professionally for 18+ years now , and I feel really bad for this guy, he had no clue what so ever what he was getting himself into, absolutely no clue , I'm almost a bit embarrassed for him , but more so feel bad for him cause this job to be done properly to a level where one literally could never be able to tell it was totalled out , is a job strictly only for highly experienced master tech level heavy collision body man techs, anyone can backyard mechanic fix it but i guarentee it will never ever ever again be properly repaired or even close to done the right way, which in the majority of cases almost always means the car is compromised cause of a high chance that if hit in the same pkace again in the future , it wont perform as well , or wont be as safe basically due to not being fixed properly, ive seen examples of cars butchered by inexperienced back yard joes who got in way way over their heads and most of those cars ive seen id never ever even consider driving in one up to highway speeds on the road , hell no.
