When I moved to LA, seventeen years ago, I hung out with young writers. What I saw then, is what I see now, a lot of kind of weird people with no life experience, imagining how something would work, with no idea on what is realistic.
@Poopookachew1
@Poopookachew1 Жыл бұрын
Just taking a guess, but if you'd hung out with more seasoned writers then, or even rewound back 10 or 15 years from that point and found your average workaday writer in the system, you'd probably have a different outlook on it. When you saw it was presumably when the old guard were on their way out and the new, cheaper, revolving door of freelance activism was waiting to be ushered in. The old guard weren't perfect or non-ideological by any means, but they at least understood story structure and retaining viewer interest. So did the execs left over from the 70's and 80's more or less. The studios likely got their current game plan around 2008 after the last writer's strike. That's not coincidentally when the nostalgia franchise ticket and bloated CGi gravy train really took off. I think this is when the C-Suite really threw their hands up in the air and gave up trying to aim for anything remotely original - they seem to have intentionally devalued the industry cache of writers among other trades within the studio system in order to have a more pliable lot to choose from. Birds of a feather. Higher ups hire what they know. And that has increasingly tended to _not be_ people who know their craft or even care to. Story structure and creativity was a skill set aside from the managerial skill set of the executive world, but now both things have increasingly become a wheelhouse that the execs don't even want to bother addressing. If you've got that class having their underlings scour Twitter or contemplating using an algorithm to choose for them their upcoming film slate to green light, they've effectively become those "with no life experience, with no idea on what is realistic." They can't even imagine how something would work it seems. Change the incentive structure of the industry and you change the culture over time. Execs and outside monied interests seem to have done this. The thing is, it's a double edged sword: It works in reverse too. (Sorry for the repost. Chose a more anon account to leave this under.)

When I see a trailer for the latest superhero or scifi movie it genuinely makes me cringe how fake it all is. The cartoon backgrounds, the over the top super powers, the ridiculous dialogue. I used to love the MCU when it began because it grounded a far-out concept, but everything is just so fake it makes me embrace real acting from the 20th century.

I have a lot of respect for the commentators who have talked the talk and now walk the walk by making their own narratives (Eric July, Razorfist, Andrew Klavan, etc). And I totally agree that fan films/ projects can be a great way to show off "proof of concept" ideas. For example, Milton Guasti, who made "Another Metroid 2 Remake", got picked up to work on the Ori series. And there are people who made Sonic fan games who got picked up by Sega to do an official game. My biggest criticism at the moment, especially as it relates to literary works, is editing and quality checking needs improvement. Nothing will sink your prospects faster than typos and basic editing mistakes making it into your final product. Which in the grand scheme of things, is a very easy thing to fix.

The problem here is that geek culture has been trashed. By both the left and right side. It's just like what has happened to rock, metal, punk, and goth music. Oh, sure, you have places where it's like in Europe or South America. But when mainstream trashed it, then threw it because a rock or metal band has more thought put into the music than a pop song. The mainstream hated. Just as they grew to hate geek culture and the deeper stories within them.
@evacody1249

To put it this way, the people you mentioned are not the answer. The answer is to dig deeper. The answer is to stop getting mad at streaming services for music and movies and TV shows. It's too look at how they opened up the world to find what you like and not bowing to the mainstreams way of thinking. To quote Eddie Trunk: "WE need the record companies to gate keep and tells what is good and to tell musicians that they are good." In other words, dig deep to find what you like and stop waiting for someone to fix what was caused by both the left and right.
@Sketch_XR
@Sketch_XR Жыл бұрын
@@evacody1249 I agree with your first comment and disagree with the second. I saw a screenshot from Ya Boi Zack talking about how comic shops are ghost towns now. The issue facing pop culture now isn't just that the mainstream trashed them, it's also that the circles that once enjoyed them no longer care and can't get new people hooked. Nerdrotic and Kneon over at Clownfish have both talked about struggling to get their kids interesting in these series a lot. For your second point, I agree the names I gave aren't the answer. But I disagree that they aren't a part of the answer. In my opinion, they play just as much of a role in showing companies what the audiences like and want to see. Independent creators are the "first step" in rebuilding the pop culture now that it is trashed. We need them to perform well so we can point to them all as examples of what the industry should be if it is to justify it's continued existence.

I agree, but I also think that indie authors are held to an impossible standard. Errors make their way into books by the biggest authors, released by the biggest publishers. It happens, and we just shrug it off because nobody's perfect. But if an indie author, with none of the big resources, makes a mistake, it is all we will hear about. Nobody expects a live singer to sound auto-tuned. Nobody expects an actor to deliver every single line with absolute perfection. Nobody cares if there is a continuity error in a movie's editing. Artists can paint what looks like the doodles of a child, and get paid a million dollars for it. Yet an indie author, writing 500 pages, editing, formatting and releasing pure fiction (without publisher notes telling them to make it more commercial) from their mind to the reader's eyes is expected to get every comma exactly correct. I agree that there is a quality issue. I also produce audiobooks and it is painful when the quality is poor. I just think that the expectations are almost set higher for indie authors than they are for big publishing house books.

But lately when a big plot reveal shows Hollywood's idea of a corrupt villain or scheme, it just utterly pales in comparison to the very real corruption of our local and world government leaders, and I often just get bored or cynical with it. The big struggle of our times is presented as a left-right 'culture war', and people don't look up and see the jetsetting 1% bleeding everyone dry. Not to toot my own horn, but I've got several novels published, and I'm developing an animated series. I've felt this way for a while now, really. While I don't think that it's wrong to call out the negative stuff when it happens, I have felt that dwelling on it can be just as bad. Hence, I both make my own new entertainment and promote the work of others that I feel are worthy of support. That last word is truly essential: the good stuff needs to be supported. Comic book movies might be failing recently, but they still make more money and get more attention than most original/indie projects can ever hope for. I would never encourage people to spend beyond their means, but if they do want to spend money on entertainment, I would encourage them to at least consider putting it towards something that might surprise them, whether it's me, Not So Sane, or whoever else. Dave, good pep talk for creators. I think cycles and trends always change into something else. This is not 1993 when 93 million people watched the last episode of Cheers together. 30 years later we are drowning in entertainment options and disconnected from each other. Movies and TV shows are great but I watch more KZbin The whole industry is changing - radio, cable, streaming... 5 years from now my guess is that there will be less content from the studios and networks, but better in quality for the most part, along with the usual junk, and less importance given to Hollywood. I love movies but most of the stuff today is just junk, filler or retreads - and that is a shame since there are hidden gems and really great artists who could entertain us much better. Most of that is independent or on KZbin. New stuff will come. That's what happens when big losses and flops hit the studios hard. You can't pay your bills with zero profits. What we are seeing is just a natural change in culture.

The most important lesson that new Pop Culture makes must learn from this moment of history is that they must NEVER sell out the rights of creation, better for it to fall out of the copyright than to be stuck by a soul sucking corporation taking away everything it made it good, stuck in copyright limbo were no one can make content out of it or worst be stuck in the vault to rot. And if they are offered the opportunity to get an adaptation of their stuff by a big studio, demand being directly involved in it, they are the ones that want YOUR stuff dont allow them to butcher it.

There is a gentleman named G Norman Lippert. Who? Exactly... This fella wrote a series of books chronicling Harry Potter's son's years at Hogwarts. Fan Fiction. He released these for free, and within a chapter of the first book, readers could tell this was to be a loving homage to JK Rowling's Wizarding World. He didn't ask for any money. He simply had an imagination and a talent for writing - so much so that some of his work is BETTER than JK's. Well, this didn't go down so well with the attorneys and he was basically squashed. Had he channeled his creativity and talent into his own IP, he'd (IMHO) be a household name today. Why didn't he do that? I have no idea, as I don't know this person (or even if he's a real human being using his real name). But, some people have immense talent at taking an existing property and extending it. Sadly, some people don't and those people seem to all be circle jerkers in Hollywood. I'm rambling, so I'll stop. I'm sure I had a point when I started this comment, but I can't remember what it was. My biggest recommendation (for everyone) is to support the shows that you like. Crowdfunding shows like Vivziepop or Fox In Space, just to give some examples, are made not by Hollywood but through the fans that enjoy it. It's built from the ground up and not made by huge gambling film companies that are slowly fizzling away in theaters. You can even argue that if you aren't going to the theaters, why not use that money to invest in those creators that can make a difference. Even if you have little to no money, $1 a month is something to at least show your favorite creators that you enjoy their content. A little bit can make a big difference especially when millions of people are donating to that same group. :)

They are still in the media circles, on social media, still promoting the terrible nonsense on our TV screens and on streaming services, and incentivizing other KZbinrs to also promote it for them for studio and production company access (some even openly admit to it). Thanks to the strikes, those same writers and actors who bash us with the most vilest terms imaginable, will now be paid MORE for doing EXACTLY the same when they return. Also, anything we point out as "things that do work" will IMMEDIATELY get called "right wing content" (despite the vast majority in our corner of the Internet being classical liberals) and buried or the production company blocked from doing business. So WHAT EXACTLY do you think the solution to that would be? We can all offer ideas or solutions until we turn blue in the face, it won't matter if other channels simply take those ideas and use it as their own.

Fan Films: When I was a younger man, I was in a rock band. We would play 85% cover material in our sets and intersperse our original songs here and there in the set.. Eventually after many years of this, we “graduated “ to playing venues that enabled us to play 99% original material. The 1% being a cover song or two that WE WANTED to play. Not had to. Same goes for these film companies. Go out and support them. It pays off in the long run. And it sends a message.

You mention at 5:46 that fan films are a good way of gaining some recognition before working on original projects. I can attest to this. When I was a freshman in high school (2005) I started production on a Legend of Zelda fan film. After 3 long years of weekend shoots with friends, we finally had ourselves a complete feature length movie that went on to gain a lot of attention from the Legend of Zelda fan base. We were even able to sell out a screening at a local movie theater here in Orange County, CA (this is all covered in videos on my channel in case anyone is interested). It's now been 15 years since that premiere, and even though I haven't invested more time to grow my channel as much as I would've liked, most of my subscribers and those who engage with my content are OG Zelda fan film fans. So I completely agree that original content, in the long run, is a far better use of our time to bring new stories to the world. But an occasional boost from established IP isn't necessarily a bad plan either. Especially first starting out.

I finally started writing down my ideas these last weeks, working on fleshing out the characters and world building before I start the writing itself (as said I have had years of experience, writing as such isn't the hard part) because I feel there is a hunger for good material. Now I don't pretend I will be able to deliver but I reread a novel I started almost twenty years ago as a late teen and rereading it I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn`t grand literature or anything but I could see the potential it had. So yeah maybe I should give it another shot. I started my youtube channel as a place to put my films - not necessarily to "get big" or become a channel people would revisit - just a depository for my portfolio. I recently made a short film for a competition using action figures and home made props. I don't make a habit of talking about it because I also feel a bit self conscious about self-promotion, but this seems like a call to creatives. If anyone reading this has a look, thanks very much and I hope you enjoy it! I grew up obsessed with films, so the systematic destruction of *every single one* of my favourite franchises has been surprisingly difficult to deal with. What makes it increasingly frustrating is that they insist "it's just a silly movie" but then if that were the case - why could they not just accept them as they were? They complained so much about us being "oppressive" that these films got remade to appease them - but if we refute the accusation - they call *US* the crybabies. They can't be so foolish as to misunderstand this contradiction, so obviously they must enjoy it.
