I have a Bendix that was modified by and sold through Andrews in the 80’s. Pretty good as long as you use proper gas. Used on my Pan for about 20 years without any probs. And now it sits on my ironhead after a slight rebuilld.

You hit the nail right on the head about the red loctite. Recently I went to change the old rear brake disc on my Shovel that someone had used red loctite on the tiny flathead allen bolts that secure it to the hub. 4 broken allen sockets and a half tank of mapp gas later...and about 2 hours...and we got them out. Same with some dumbass that had used it on the compensator sprocket nut. Blue loctite works fine. Red loctite is for shit that you NEVER WANT TO TAKE OFF AGAIN!! The ol' garage find is starting to look like a real bike again! Do yourself a favor and get a factory service manual for the year Shovel that you're working on. You won't make mistakes (like that washer on the clutch)...Just sayin! Keep the manual for future reference like I do, or add it to the price of the bike and include it when you sell it. Great job so far guys!

Because this bike has been heavily modified, there is not one specific manual that works for everything. At least we have KZbin for research!

@@KingpinGarage None of the manuals work for everything, but they can be invaluable for the little stuff. (Like that washer that was on the clutch!)

@@thatsmrharley2u2 We do have a manual for this era of shovels, but this bike is kind of frankensteined. Most of the motor stuff we already know how to do. With regards to the washer, my dad was going off of memory but we resolved that problem fairly quickly.

I’ve got a 48’ Pan that came with a Bendix. Bout’ a month later it leaked gas from the accelerator pump. I knew someone that had a box of rebuilt Bendix’s. I must of gone thru 5 of them. I even bought my own brand new rebuild kit. Nothing but trouble. Once I got a S&S shorty the bike started and ran great. I found a Bendix manual and it’s normally used on snowmobiles. Today’s gas eats thru the pump rubber parts in a few months. They are junk in my opinion. Love the vids!

Thanks! We are huge fans of S&S carbs. We change out that Bendix for one in a later video and it makes a huge difference. It starts on the first kick now!

Hello , nice bike . Im thinking the bendix you have is not an adjustable main jet . What you thought was adjustable main jet is actually the idle tube .An adjustable main jet sticks up about 1/2 an inch and has a spring similar to front screw which is the idle mixture needle . You can buy a kit to convert it but mostly 40mm carbs were adjustable main jets . I think its good that your son is interested in Harleys .

isnt that the bendix with fixed main jet? i think the ones with adjustable main has a spring, just like the idle...

We are not sure. The Bendix is a carb that we’ll have to do more research on
