Another fine and interesting video. The need for proper capacitor discharge CANNOT be over-emphasized!!

It's a good practice to check the +13.4VDC output while working on this power supply board to ensure that it's working properly.

thanks, this will be helpful for me! the 2385 power supply board has gained notoriety in the forums for overheating.

Great video! You mentioned a 100 Ohm resistor for discharging the capacitors; how many watts should the resistor be? Thanks

Hi, my 2285B is humming from both speakers, using only headphones too. When i turn up the volume looks like there is a second humming in a higher frequency. When i select Phono, AM or FM and turn the volume up the humming gets louder. I got this Receiver not so long ago and looking inside seems to me that no service was done (but i'm not a specialist, so...). Do you have any idea what can i try to fix this?

Great video. And it is really great finding someone who enjoys explaining in such detail the step by step process of what you do know. Thank you. I plan to repair/ restore my Marantz 4400 someday once I feel I am capable. Long way off yet. But my poor 4400 which I have owned new October 1974, has suffered through two major earthquakes when I lived in Big Bear Calif i1992. #2 flung my 4400 to the floor. The Dolby rotary switch ( which appears to have 5 wafer switches in it) was bent severely at the stem as it passes through the face plate. Knowing full well it would snap I did, straightening it. 😁 🔫 Duh; any suggestions on trying to match this switch? I am convinced someone has a replacing switch but trying to cross reference and such is not easy. My only other option is to ( if possible ) disassemble the wafers, and place the stem in a lathe. Machine the stem down a few thousands and place a slightly undersized hollow stem over it with heat & crazy glue. Thank you so much❗️

Upsss. How come you short circuit the PSU's electrolytic caps without load R? I understand you show it but you roasts your caps.

Had a ligthning surge hit my house a day ago. I have a Marantz AV Pre Tuner AV 8801. There is power but no sound, no picture to the TV, and cannot bring up the menu screen on the receiver. Could you please let me know what I need to look at to solve this. Thanks!

Have you compared the accuracy of bringing a cap up to full voltage to check for leakage vs. using the esr meter? I'd love to use the meter if it's close rather than firing up my Sprague cap tester each time I check older large expensive caps.

just wondering if you can shed some advice here. my marantz sr5008 has this popping-buzzing sound after about 5-10mins of use. some said its a capacitor problem. some said its the transformer. i want to try and do it myself (got a little background on electronics, sort of) what might be the possible cause of the popping-buzzing sound? TIA, cheers

At the beginning of this video I thought a cap smoked causing the corrosion on the chassis. That is really nasty pitting.
@swinde6 жыл бұрын
This pitting can mean that this unit was stored in an area without climate control, which is very bad for electronic equipment. It is not the temperature that causes the problem but rather the humidity that can reach near 100% with out heating and air conditioning.
@jesusgavemeaids4 жыл бұрын
The 2220B service manual doesn't have a section on audio adjustment...not sure what to do. 🤷🏼♂️
@swinde6 жыл бұрын
9:47 ... While this is a good idea, isn't there a possibility that the leads of the new capacitor might be different like coming out the bottom at a right angle to the original capacitor? I would think it would be better to mark the stripe or the plus sign position.
@KevboKev6 жыл бұрын
Turned my Marantz 2240B on today as I do every day to listen to music, and I am not getting a humming sound coming from the speakers. It also is coming from the headphones. Tried turning knobs and pushing buttons, but the forums on AudioKarma are telling me to recap the PSU. Does that seem like the next logical step? Great video, by the way. Fascinated the whole way through!

Don't understand one point Mark. How does the 'tic' mark on the old cap help you line up the new one?
@Blueglow8 жыл бұрын
If you do enough of this type of work, you will pull out a capacitor and then 2 seconds later while holding it in your hand, you will say "hmmm which direction was positive when I pulled it out?" with the tic mark, you can hold it back over the spot, know the direction all your tics are in and you'll instantly know. not all boards are marked clearly which directly pos / neg are, and some are marked incorrectly. you need to remember how it came out to put it back properly

Could anyone help with this ? I took the Tone Amp board out of my Marantz 2238 to clean the pots and switches. Put it back together and it sounded great. But after an hour the amp started smoking and stopped. There was smoke pouring out of the transformer which was too hot to touch. Can't find any evidence of a short. Worried I have killed my Marantz. :(
@Blueglow8 жыл бұрын
+doogie h Likely some damage done if you have smoke from the transformer, and likely something shorted somewhere. Use a multi-meter set to continuity and start poking around to find the short.

Such great videos. I just blew the (2nd in) the 3A fuse on my marantz 2270. What is that fuse for? I had asked my 6year old to flip my record but she didn't put the needle all the way down. I told her I couldn't hear it so she turned it up to 11. When I walked in and found the needle up I put it down not knowing the insane volume that it was at. Now I have no lights or sounds. The only thing I see inside is this single blown fuse. Could this be the issue?
@bshingledecker6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you will see this, maybe not. 2226B. No protection circuit. Unit lights up, only hum on output. (headphones) Do bridge rectifiers fail much? or would you concentrate on power board caps?. Sorry for the question. Filter caps test good as you indicated. I'm better with tube radios, and venturing further.

went from bad to worse. Taking some voltage readings on the green transformer output wires, As soon as I did, main fuse went. UGH.

@omg123hibob8 жыл бұрын
+MrMac5150 I was told it's to reduce stress on the solder pads during shipping and general movement of the unit.

+omg123hibob which is why i will probably do some gluing of the larger parts during my marantz recap. just not that horrible old yellow stuff.
@omg123hibob8 жыл бұрын
+Der Ubersau That old glue can actually turn corrosive. I haven't seen it being corrosive in any of my Marantz 22xx units, but my Marantz 1550 had it eating my power supply.
