Because us mechanics don't have all day to clean and change everything for heck of it we have a time limit set by the labour times and you customers wanting it back same day so we have to get it in and out. Being mechanic isn't like you see on KZbin the alot of pressure and deadlines

Really pisses me off to see people putting thumbs down on videos that the creator has obviously worked hard at making, these people have nothing else better to do than sit behind there phone or computer getting jealous that they're not capable of doing the job there watching

For the reverse switch, VAG cars don't tend to have a washer for the switch - I've found adding a washer actually pushes the switch too far out so it doesn't get pressed enough by the lever to activate the reverse lights. Good work though James.
@TheSavageGarage4 жыл бұрын
This would have been true but with the new switch I bought it has extra length to make up for the washer 😬

Have had to build all sorts of transmissions over the years and a good way to get interference type bearings into housings is to heat up or chill the components in an oven/hot plate/ refrigerator as appropriate. In your case gear set in fridge and gearbox casing in oven. You don’t have to go mad with it time wise but the difference it makes to putting it back together is crazy. Kudos to you for doing this yourself

I was always taught when using liquid gasket use very little, just enough to make a seal, after torquing down the amount of sealant of sealant on the outside equates to the same amount on the inside. Besides your saving money on sealant .

Top work James, looking forward to the next video. I the had privilege to of worked in an old skool garage (Shiplake Motors) near Henley On Thames, where the owner (Alan Freebody) to which despite being 63 with two plastic hips, didn't think twice about whipping out a mk2 Transit gearbox onto his shoulder and get on the bench to strip and rebuild it. He was very much can it be repaired rather than replaced mentality.

Splendid!!! Make a BIG «caution tag» on the gearbox so you dont forget to fill it up with oil. So easy to forget at this stage... Lookin´ forward to the followup
@einfelder82624 жыл бұрын
I find it very efficient that you didn't need to clean too much of the box, saves a lot of time. Even the internal bits didn't need oiling on assembly, because the old oil with bits of metal infused was still there. And a sentimental blob of shitty grease left on the driveshaft couplers was a pleasure to view, but the highlight for me was the amazing excessive silicone used on mating surfaces. Plenty of excess on the inside to mix through the oil. Overall kudos for tackling the job, but oh dear - some easily corrected steps not taken. The box will live long enough to see out the car, but if a job is worth doing do it properly. Plenty of time for cleaning while waiting for parts.

It has been good to see the inside of an fwd box, most of the videos you see are rwd ones. I've never done anything like this before and have only watched this stuff on youtube, so take the following with a pinch of salt obviously. It looked to me like you were using a lot of sealant, remember if it's oozing out where you can see it's almost certainly oozing in also.

If you haven't fitted it yet, please put some oil in it and leave it sitting with the tin end cap down for 20 mins or there abouts, basically so the input shaft is facing the roof/sky. The reason for this is that when you fill those boxes for the first time in the car, the oil can take some time to reach fifth gear. This is why those are generally the bearings that feck up when as they boxes have leaks and/or become low in oil. As for the oil, the stuff I use is Comma MVMTF Plus 75W FS Manual Gear Oil. With a trade card you get is from Halfords for around £9 per litre. That said, I know many taxis running around with 10w/40 semi synthetic in the gearbox and you know the abuse they take, just saying should you want to save a few quid. I just find the MTF 75W gives a slightly smoother and quieter gearbox so I use it in my own boxes but 10/40 Is perfectly sufficient for they boxes. P.S. Great video and very informative, also brave, I wouldn't have been rebuilding without renewing all the bearings but then I don't normally pay for the parts so maybe if I were doing my own box 😉
