With a project like this, a good start would be to ignore all the fanboy gushing and listen *very carefully* to the experienced diesel/hydraulic guys. A half-day training course for *both* of you would be, not only a sensible move, but possibly a *life-saver* ~ yours or someone else's. It might be a good idea to check all round the house and shop to find every overhead hazard(maybe even signpost them ~ it's all too easy to forget). Making mistakes while you learn could be fatal. I'm not elf + safety police but hydraulics can be seriously dangerous. I would also suggest leaving it dirty until an engineer looks it over; the oil and dirt could provide valuable pointers for someone who knows what they are doing. This could be a great piece of kit for the shop and for the new shop but get some serious, professional advice *first* ~ you nearly crashed it turning into the drive. Good Luck with it. Cheers for now, Dougie.

You guys are throwing off all my alarms with that thing! I work in safety and training at one of the largest gold mines in the country and you never ever walk under a suspended boom or load without it blocked against motion. With the hydraulic tank that low there is absolutely no guarantee that what's in there will hold that boom up with the engine not supplying constant pressure. A machine like this that has an engine compartment accessible by raising the boom will have built in locks for maintenance. You also had the powerline to the house right behind you, be sure to know all overhead obstructions before raising the boom cause the best case if you catch something is minor equipment damage and worse case would be death. I have always been impressed by your ability to research road blocks in your builds. Take the time to get to know this machine and the hazards associated with it. The 2 brake pedals, one is the brake and the other one is called a inching pedal or inching brake. It is used when you need to increase engine rpms for your hydraulics without taking it out of gear and to inch up on what ever you are moving, like using a clutch. This Forklift should work the same way. I was a Forklift Mechanic for about 14 years at a Nissan and then a Mitsubishi Forklift Dealer. If I'm wrong? Finally something I know a little about, lol. Detroit Diesel has been around longer than your pop's. They are popular industrial engine's built by GM. Very easy to work on and parts are readily available. For boom extension try setting the e-brake. Some models require the e-brake set because of stability issues if the equipment moves while it is extended. A GradeAll service manual will be a huge blessing. Those look like semi tires but they are actually industrial tires and the steering tires wear a bit faster for obvious reasons. If you need operational help feel free to let me know but I'm sure you have a friend in a warehouse that can help you. As you've already discovered rear wheel steering is a bit different but it will also get you places front wheel can not. Now invest in a hydrolic crimper, lol.

A couple of things. 1- The extend cylinder is most likely not working for lack of fluid. 2- When the driver was pulling it off the trailer, it looked like the rear wheels where tilted in (camber) which means you are most likely gonna have to change the king pins. that would explain the hard turning he had after it was brought off the trailer and the tire wear. Nice unit !! Good luck!! Parts are easy to come by. If you need anything quick, i'm in atlanta and can get all you need here..

William Ezell the cylinders probably need rebuilt. It didn’t look like they have a telescoping boom. Detroit is known for using oil. They need a cylinder lock if they are going to be working under it
@williamezell8264 жыл бұрын
@@stephenshelby392 This is a high reach designed unit for construction, it has an extendable cylinder. If the cylinders need rebuilt they would have bypass fluid running down them because the o-rings would be worn. Don’t stand under a hydraulic anything, especially while it’s leaking 😩 Clean out the hydraulic system, fluid shouldn’t be dark. You wouldn’t be able to move the boom extension if any of the lines are leaking. The control servo may also be blocked or just simply not enough hydraulic fluidz
@benmac73154 жыл бұрын
Having worked on a machine that used to regularly blow hydraulic lines I can assure you everything still works ok, just if you try and use the system with the leak it blows oil absolutely everywhere. So it's easy to spot the leak. But agree most likely the control valve
@tasmanmcmillan17774 жыл бұрын
Ben Mac everything still works to an extent. I work on all sorts of equipment, from 800t excavators to little 1t forklifts. Hydraulic systems can easily fail, especially leaking ones. If there is a leak in the wrong place and that system loses pressure, the whatever it is which is on that circuit will immediately drop at the speed of the pressure loss. If it’s a complete blow, that boom will drop, killing whoever is under it. I’ve seen those things fail, it’s not pretty.
@benmac73154 жыл бұрын
@@tasmanmcmillan1777 I dont recall saying that it wouldn't. But then I don't reccomend standing under anything supported only by hydraulics. Boomer! That thing is awesome. Hire yourself a service rep to come out for the day and show you all around that thing. It will be money well spent. I drove one of those for years, got recertification every couple years. I think you could find a class local to you that could train you up properly. It only takes an afternoon. You can never be too safe around heavy equipment like that.

Ah hell y’all need to careful under that boom especially if there’s no way to secure it while it’s up in the air. 1st and foremost whenever working on hydraulic lines or systems you always have to relieve the pressure before working on it( by working the levers back and forth side to side before working on it) cause those lines are under a lot and I mean ALOT of pressure so y’all be careful cause it can get dangerous real quick. Be safe y’all and congrats on the new purchase and the awesome content y’all create.

The reason for the two break pedals is one of them is for main breaking, like stoping the whole machine, and the other one is to stop the machine from moving so you can accelerate the engine and lift the forks up faster, I have a late 60s Clark forklift with that feature
@Eschelonistic4 жыл бұрын
I doubt that the two I operate at work have 2 brakes, one is the brake and the other is what is known as the "Inching" brake, so you can move/creep up to the load or with the load.
