18:45 the reason why Christmas is so close to the new year is because the European Christian church moved the celebration of Christ's birth towards the end of the year to compete with local winter solstice Pagan celebrations(since a lot of the local population needed convincing to fully convert from paganism). Generally speaking marking the coldests days of the year with a festival to keep up spirits is just naturally something people would like to do. Fun fact, some countries' modern names for Christmas still carry names of pagan dieties. For example in Eastern Europe Christmas is referred to as "Koleda" which seems to also have been the name of a prominent god of harvest, which again tends to be celebrated in winter. To the extent that Jesus of Nazareth existed as a historical figure, most historians from what I can tell believe his birth to have been during June not December.
