Old mechanic's tip: Don't tighten any of the screws until you've started all of them. Especially when there's a complicated or large surface.

I'm an aircraft engineer and worked on RAF Harriers. I have broken one of the three part windshield. I left every screw loose until they were all in, then tightened them in sequence. I got to the last one and a crack appeared. Afterwards my boss noticed something strange and checked the thickness. It was 3mm thicker than it should have been. That got me off the hook.🙂

Seriously, get one of those portable A/C units that roll around. There are a couple of places you could stick the exhaust on one of those and send cold air into the back for someone who has to spend any time there. Edited to correct misspellings.

My flightschool switched to Aviatize this year. We can reserve our flights in it renting an aircraft and logging pilots progress. All documentation in there as well. And I know the school is working on getting all the maintenance documents there as well.

I’d recommend making some guide pins out of AN3 bolts so you can better line up your retaining plates and your windshields. I’d also say that using a toothpick to apply sealant to the screws is going to be a disaster. Applying a liberal amount of PRC/Pro Seal would do a substantially better job of sealing everything. On King Air 200s we dip the screws in soapy water so the PRC doesn’t stick to the screws but still provides a tight seal during installation.

Jason you did the windshield on a hard surface and put it together with soft tape and I was thinking 🤔 you have to put it under the shield also it wil can crack when it’s under high pressure

Jason, the 401 and Rebuild Rescue has been the driving factor for getting me into aviation. I discovered your channel about 6 mo ago and have watched every video you've put out since. Some of them multiple times! The inspiration from your channel led to me finding my own free Ercoupe 415-D that I'm working at getting back into flying condition. Keep up the good work! Why did you not seal the windshield with PR-1425 B 1/2? The rubber gasket is ok but will deteriorate quicker than the B 1/2. Otherwise the project is looking great!!! I'm currently working on my 76 muskeeteer B19 150.

Avery tidy way to apply sealant to screws is use a syringe with the needle removed, I use syringes for epoxy application all the time.

You always put screws in loose when you are putting anything on, and then tighten them down after you get them all in. That is for everything, not just airplane windshields.

Surprised to see anti-chafing tape (old-school) instead of AvDEC HI-TAK gaskets and/or tape. We use it all the time in GA, Commercial, and Military aircraft.

​@@buckmurdock2500 i called it the back wing has he referred to it in the video as not to confused things, the back wing is actually called a horizontal stabilizer. i just noticed when they dropped the horizontal stabilizer on to the fuselage the protective rub strip was missing, which it most certainly requires.

HI Jason, I thought of you guys when I was in BAS, Bates City, MO. They have a few 401's sitting in there yard if you need any other parts. What I've learned in aviation or just automobiles you always install ALL of the screws or bolts loosely then when they are all in then tighten them down evenly so the metal always stays somewhat straight.

I started watching this a couple of weeks ago and it's been so great binging it. It's almost Sad that I'm caught up and need to wait to watch more in real time. I'm not an AP but I was a weapons mechanic the the last 3 mos of my tour I was in Paint shop. I can tell you we didn't take the care you are, but these were fighter jets in service and flying and needed to get repainted and back in the air fast. I learned so much about airframes and aviation. I wish I had gone for my ticket decases ago... Great Job Guys and I'm waiting with bated breath for each new ep now...

I think it’s in the structural repair manual. I have done a number of windscreen replacements and can remember doing a 421 and a 402 main windscreen change . I vaguely recall those attach screws should have been torqued up to 21 in lbs . the cessna factory will advise correctly .

@@buckmurdock2500 . yes you correct the 421 had layered glass and vinyl. but the 402,s was fitted progressively with screws in all certain places and slowly tighten with a torque screw driver. but the 421 windscreen was fitted with the screws placed in a sequence order and then torqued down progressively . The screws were encapsulated in plastic bobbins in the glass . 402 windscreens crack very easily if not torqued down correctly and it’s in very cold conditions .

@@eagle2019 The plastic bobbins were only in the Cessna 421 with the “glass windscreen’. sorry for the confusion . we were using the repair and over haul manual. Not the MM. It was a Cessna supplied manual. The 421 had a slightly different structure also around the windows area. All this is from a time 25 to 30 years ago ,the memory is slightly slower these days .
