I've seen a behind the scenes video. In fact, they've been one step further than that. In some scenes, they have clearly explained the characters to the actors and asked them to react accordingly to unexpected events. One example of that is the scene when the characters discover that the police in installing a quarantine on the building. The actors knew the flow of the scene to some extent but they had no idea the production had the budget to make it look so real and overwhelming so the actors are genuinely stupefied when they see it and it enable them to sell much better the idea that the authorities are behaving in an unorthodox way so they have to keep on filming.

REC's ending lands where Quarantine's doesn't because Quarantine made the choice to NOT go with REC's ending... and it flatlines the film. I saw Quarantine first, in the theater when it came out in 2008, and for all the things that it adds/changes, it paled in comparison to REC because of how they changed that ending. Quarantine's critical flaw, besides being nearly shot for shot, is that it caved in and gave us another crazed zombie virus film... [Spoilers Ahead, because I have to talk about this ending] Whereas REC's ending totally changes the tone of the film. Where this is no longer another crazed zombie flick, but rather a film that tries to literally implicate the Vatican for kidnapping and murder........... Think about how dark that is... We come to find out this whole thing is not a virus but rather demonic possession. The Vatican secretly kidnapped a girl believed to be possessed, bringing her to an undisclosed location so they could experiment on her and see if they could scientifically find the root of demonic possession. And supposedly they do, leaving the kidnapped victim to die of starvation alone in a cage... I remember sitting down and watching this film for the first time, my jaw dropped at this reveal. The implication of it alone could be considered controversial... And then to have the reveal that not only did their plan backfire spectacularly but that this girl has morphed into this huge, hideous monstrous being that got loose and is wandering around the apartment... Yeah, I started feeling afraid for my life as well. Not to mention, the reveal in Quarantine is really weak and it's not something that we the audience probably already weren't guessing as we were watching it. REC's ending takes a sharp right turn and it changes how you approach the film and its sequels. I readily see REC 2 as a fun thrill ride that continues on the shock of the first film.

Hmm, I never saw it that way, although that is a very interesting take. I always assumed the church just decided to chalk up this very real virus as a "demonic possession" in order to try and validate themselves. So instead of the virus being contained and researched on by scientists who would take the proper precautions, they instead allow the virus to travel, mutate and spread due to their arrogance/ignorance, attempting to "cure" it. I always found it to be interesting because most "zombie/creature" movies are "Science gone wrong" movies, and I thought it was a nice twist. But your version also makes sense .

It's insane how few people have seen this movie. The first time you see the creature is the last time I was genuinely freaked out by s horror movie.

To this day only two horror movies made me feel genuinely afraid and I've seen them (almost, I guess) all, being a huge horror fan since a very young age. REC is one of them, the second being the Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Last month I went to Barcelona and had the chance to go to the REC building and see the first floor. It's a woman's clothing shop now lol. It's such an iconic film and the building inside is really creepy looking.

When I have a discussion with friends about the scariest movies they've ever watched, and they bring up movies like The Conjuring or Insidious, I think, "Oh, these people have never seen [REC]".

When this movie was available to watch in South Africa, we had rolling blackouts or “Loadshedding” for about 2-3 hours at a time. During one blackout, myself and my nephew decided it would be a smart idea to watch this at night in complete darkness. The final 10 minutes building up to the climax of this film, literally made me scream out load in a pitch so high, I’m pretty sure the dogs could hear it. This film is a masterpiece.

I was glad to hear that the ending messed you up the same way it did with me. That monster design at the end, just seeing that in the dim lighting and complete silence, was one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen in my life.

REC is also one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Its tight pacing and chaos help elevate the suspense and scares. Manuela Velasco is just amazing, and the last few minutes is pure tension.

Here's a little trivia for you: the portuguese newspaper clips at the end were actually written in brazillian portuguese and not european portuguese. I only noticed 'cause I'm portuguese, probably google translator is to blame. But I agree, I really liked Rec, its really well made, and I don't usually like found phootage flicks at all.

I was lucky enough to see this in a pre release screening, so knew absolutely nothing about it. It’s a terrifying masterpiece. I came out of it nerves gangling and high on adrenalin. Chris is spot on. If you like horror this is a essential viewing.

YES! One of the best foreign horror flicks. Period, end of story. Oh, and the lead is crazy cute. Part two was solid as well, but the religious aspect sort of hurt it a wee bit.
