I didn't get so lucky however, that part of the culture seep into me and that's how we dealt with individuals. If they robbed an elderly or do home invasion....the criminal would hope that it was the police that caught them first and not the individuals.

I had a chance to listen to Frank Jordan a former mayor of San Francisco who's in his 80's. He's a Democrat and had a more practical understanding of San Francisco's many problems followed by actual solutions rather than typical double-talk Bay Area politicians are known to peddle. Tell the people what they want to hear and bend to whichever way the squeaky-wheel trade winds blow just isn't cutting it anymore. Maybe they could coax Mr. Jordan out of retirement to get Oakland back on track or at least educate the current political pretenders on how to actually run a city.

A few basic things can make the city better. Lower taxes on everything. Higher pay for cops and firefighters. Protection of property to stop criminals. No tax on Guns/ammo for the locals. The lower taxes and protection of property will overnight change the city.
