In 1967, for my first BSA camp-out, my late Dad taught me how to turn his old WWII Musette bag into a backpack the way that you show here, using the shoulder sling as backstraps. He had 1 year left in his 27 year career as an Army infantry officer. Somehow he had retained that bag in a footlocker since it was issued to him as a rifle platoon leader in 1943. I have it still. I wouldn't use it as a backpack due to its sentimental value, but I had forgotten the technique he showed me. I may yet buy a nice reproduction of that musette bag and try it out. Thanks for the tip and reviving a precious memory.

Corporal I have to say this the coolest video I have seen for alot of reasons. #1 The pack frame and whole haversack modification I have never seen before. #2 You included your son in this and he has grown with it and #3 You are very detail oriented when you show how to do what you are doing. Outstanding indeed! I wish there was a way to get in contact with you without social media. I have some ideas that might be of your interest.

Good thing about these video resources is it doesn't matter that it's 3 years old as in this video. Great tips here and could be vital if your small backpack got damaged or broken as well as the haversack converted to a daypack. Junior is getting younger! I'm watching these going back in time.

Arrgh, I am using a haversack in civil life as a backup carrying item, always present in one of my backpack pockets. So when I go to buy food, I have an additional space. So when I get to use the haversack, the backpack is already full and heavy. So my initial hype about the method was kinda spoiled :D Anyway, thanks for a great video and an unexpected method, it is an awesome one.

You could use rope, and make a Monkey Braid for each side, 'may distribute the load better, or what I did was a Sheepshank with a double halfhitch at (aka Clovehitch) each end to lock the sheepshank ends. With that strap, he could prob go the locked sheepshank route, to distribute the load to 3 straps on each side.....just a thought!

Have a look at photos of infantrymen from the Civil War. You will find out that they wore their haversacks much higher up so the haversack wouldn't bounce on the hip. In fact, the haversack pretty much sat under their armpits.

I carry a haversack all the time... but not any of those ways. Shorten the strap by nearly half (either tie a knot in it or double it over and stitch it) and carry it rotated to the back. The sack should ride no lower the small of your back, I have mine almost in the middle of my bacl. It does not bounce, slap or slide around. It also does not put as much pressure on your shoulders as you back is more involved. I can run at full speed and it will not bounce or slide around. My opinion, the only way to properly carry a haversack.
