I did go live in the wilds of Alaska! In Sept/Oct of 2016, I packed my bag, caught a flight from Dallas to Seattle then Seattle to Ketchikan, then a bush plane to Prince of Wales Island. I rented a 4x4 and disappeared into the rain forest for 2 months. If I can do it, you can too.

We used to make these as kids. Called them 'Buddy Burners.' In order to make them easier to light we would put a piece of string in there like a wick.

We used to make something similar when I was a Boy Scout lo, those many decades ago. Get a strip of corrugated cardboard maybe 2” wide by about 15” long, roll it up tight. Tie it with twine so it doesn’t unroll. Slide several ‘strike anywhere’ kitchen matches into those holes in the cardboard made by the corrugating.. now, melt some wax and soak the whole thing so it’s completely full and saturated. The wax sealing the match heads as well. Now you’ve a waterproof fire starter that you can strike anywhere and it will burn for maybe ten minutes . It doesn’t require a tin, but that means it isn’t as robust.

Over 50 years ago when I was in the Cub scouts we made something exactly like that except for we used a can of tuna

I use old candles for the tuna can size burners. Never thought about downsizing it. We start with an old candle and drip a little over the cardboard and light it. From there we just put pieces of wax on top and it melts in. I never have to clean a pot and it's as safe as burning a candle. Only problem with cooking with buddy burners is the soot but that is different than just starting a fire. It's a bit slower than alcohol but it has advantages too. I didn't see you start a fire with it and I imagine it might be difficult to get it out of most fires once they are started. Maybe that's in another video. Thanks for this and I especially like your lessons on tarp set up and knots. Great life skills.
@sacwriter74004 жыл бұрын
I used to do the same thing, but I used metal bottle caps. I would also use a paper match for the wick, just scrape the wax off the head and then strike it to light. It made for a great pocket tinder, especially in wet weather

Does it leave a lot of soot on the pan? That's a pain in the butt especially when you're not near a lot of sand and water.
@oldtimerlee88208 жыл бұрын
pollyester303 Yes, burning wax does leave soot, based on my experience. However, that doesn't have to be an issue for someone who doesn't try to keep their pots looking shiney like new, while in the field. Simply wipe off the loose soot with anything that's available. Dry leaves, grass, even plain dirt will remove most of the residue. Naturally that doesn't take care of remaining soot stains, that require strong abrasive, such as sand or steel wool. When it's that hard to remove those "stains" it also means there's less soot to transfer.. Keeping the pot in a stuff sack, between uses, ensures that any loose soot residue doesn't get on other items in the pack. Hope this helps.

Adventure Outdoors I make hubdreds of them per year. mine don't use lids though. Made from tuna cans, or cat food cans, they will make a consistent burn of over an hour. They'll heat a can of baked beans in under 3 mins. blow it out, let the wax settle and store away in your pack.

IMO a better version would be to use flat lamp wick instead of cardboard. the lamp wick will last longer, and as 'charred material' it would be better for flint/steel fire lighting. ;) great video Sean.

Can you light it with just a Ferro-rod?
@EducatedIdiocy8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think so, mostly because there's wax on it which is hard to melt with just sparks. Also, cardboard is not light and fluffy like cotton so it wont catch a spark easily. BUT I have not tried it so until then, I do not know.

Don't use your wife's pans to melt wax, as it really seems to ruin them, and they can't be easily cleaned. Get a pan at goodwill, or a garage sale for a couple bucks, and keep it in the garage for yourself.
