First. It has been a while since I learned something that is a game changer in your videos. Being a newbie, first watching your tutorials and tips on bushcraft, every single episode was a learning experience. I felt the same with this idea of using the wool blanket and poncho as a tent. Second, you are lucky to be acquainted with E.J. Snyder. He was our (my wife and I) favorite participant on Naked and Afraid. The reason we enjoyed him so much was that he was resourceful, imaginative, but most of all, he was always very humane with other participants. I remember when he caught that huge eel on one episode, and then when he built that crazy raft with seats. Yeah! It was great watching him.

The first poncho I purchased was from USGI. Not bad. After further research, found out that Orc Industries supplies the military with ponchos. This one seems way better made and is large, 96”x65”. I keep both and a 10x10 tarp in my emergency kit in my vehicle. Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve geared up pretty well and have followed your tutorials for quite some time. Always impressed, Thank you sir! Oh yeah, almost forgot, happy birthday!!!

@baronedipiemonte3990 Thank y'all so much! I have been wanting a few more milsurp ponchos, but they are hard to find for the right price. The ORC ponchos are only $45 a pop, which is what my local surplus shops sell their milsurp ones for (when they have them).

Yurt mechanics, love it❤. Think the Mongolians knew something about wool😉. I have always used 2 Navajo wool blankets on my horses when packing. Great for thier back and me to use. Wool is king, people forget this❤
@jeromethiel432316 күн бұрын
Wool will keep you warm even when soaking wet. There's a reason snowmobile boots have a felt booty your foot goes in. That felt may end up soaked, but your feet (while they might get cold) won't get frostbite. Although if your snowmobile boots aren't keeping the liner dry, i would wonder why and fix it. Wool is amazing as a blanket material, and i recommend it to anybody who cares to listen.

If you look at how a four-season tent is made, you should be able to duplicate it by using 2 layers of thin tarps. The key is to have a little space between them to create the insulating layer. One way you could do this is to set one tarp up and then use another branch or cord layer, depending on how you set it up, and put the other tarp above the first creating a gap between the two. The thinner tarps would be less bulky to pack and give you more options for shelter types and other uses.

Clean the tarp with rubbing alcohol and use the rough side of stick on Velcro and to attach the wool blanket so that you can roll it up as 1 unit and continue on with your mission to the next spot. I don’t know if that will work but in theory it should

The homeless people I know have been using blankets over their tents and covered with a tarp. It’s cold in Maine. There is a homeless shelter but many find the accommodation less than the outdoors. Some cannot get along with others, some do drugs, some resent authority, especially when someone makes every opportunity to flex. Those are just the things I can repeat here.

You want that small air gap, it adds insulation. If the tarp had an underlayer of wool, it would not insulate as well as a wool blanket under a tarp with a small air space. Air is an amazing insulator, use it as much as you can.

You may have seen those cheap blankets the Salvation Army gives to the homeless. Part wool and part other fibers. They aren't loomed I believe that they are felted blankets. In Portland you can find them laying on the ground where the homeless left them after they got dirty and wet. Throw them in the washer and dryer and they are as good as new. You can also find them at Goodwill already cleaned. A few of these would make a perfect cover for a Wikiup style shelter. Cover it all with a Harbor Freight tarp and you would have a pretty decent long term shelter.

Everyone should do emergency prep. Even just having medical supplies on hand, food, water. You need those things anyway, why not stock up? I live in a hurricane zone, and every year people panic, because they haven't prepared. You do not prepare when an emergency is about to happen or has happened. You prepare BEFORE hand, and then laugh at all the people who didn't.

Survival wool blanket idea... take a large wool blanket of the desired side, and then put those ring rivets a lot of tarps have along two sides that you can stake through or put cordage through - maybe it will last longer than just poking holes through your blanket.

Excellent shelter idea!!! I had the same thought about an insulated shelter, however I planned to use a poncho liner, aka woobie, for the insulation layer. While it would be bulky, carrying two woobies and two ponchos, it would make both an insulated shelter and insulated cover to sleep under. Carrying a second woobie would not be bulkier than carrying a wool blanket and a woobie is lighter in weight. At the moment I can fit an arcturas tarp, rain poncho, woobie along with the other 5 Cs of survival in my medium Alice Pack with frame. The sleeping pad and additional woobie could be fastened to the bottom of the pack frame. I'm going to have to work with this to see how it works out. Thanks again for another excellent video.

Corporal, I like your idea. If you place a thin branch or sapling between the wool blanket and tarp, you reduce the chance of condensation. The rear could have been covered over with leafy branches. If you’re going to write a book, make it informative and fun to read. I have a couple of superb books, especially ‘Les Hiddens’s Explore Wild Australia’ and one or two absolute crapfests.
