Thanks for going to the effort to document all this Gordon , I’m confident enough now after watching to have a go at taking head off my series 60’to see if it’s cracked or done a gasket ( pressurizing the coolant badly (not compressor)) , cheers from Australia 👍

Awesome series! I have a Columbia with a Mercedes motor I'm going to rebuild this winter I know they're different motors but the concepts should be the same apart from mine having 6 heads not 1! Thanks

Thank you for uploading very informative and impressive series. Please update how this engine is running now after certain miles on it. Especially since you used PAI kit. Is it still running fine?
@57bagre4 жыл бұрын
Still driving it everyday. Thanks for watching.

smoooth! Can you tell us how efficient the engine is running? Noise, MPG, power, etc. Can you also comment on cost of parts?
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
Cost was about $4000.00, it sounds a little smoother and quieter, but not sure, it ran good before, as for the other, only time will tell.

Thanks for all the great videos. Why did you pick that kit over oem?
@57bagre4 жыл бұрын
The machine shop recommended this kit.

Hey Gordon, just watched your 2 new videos. Thanks for the time and effort. I saw you comment below on it costing you about $4000.00, as a comparison how much would it have cost for a shop to rebuilt it and they time they would have taken? How long did this take you?
@realanimal36027 жыл бұрын
Also good work, you must be very satisfied with a job well done. I've seen a lot of half-assed work in my day and I can tell you, you ain't one of them.
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
a shop should have done it in a week for about 12-14k, I took 5 weeks because of the weather and the holidays.
@realanimal36027 жыл бұрын
Wow that is a huge savings. After factoring in weather and holidays, I figure 2 weeks of delays??? You got the job done pretty quickly. Especially considering you've never rebuilt a big diesel before. My hat is off to you. This channel is going to be only the second I subscribe too.
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
Thank You Sir, my delays were closer to 4 weeks with the weather, I live near St. Louis, we have cold winters here, not like Minnesota, but cold still and when it's not below freezing, it's raining and I can't put in full days when it's that cold and gets dark so early. I'm glad it's over and it went well, slow, but well. I'm also glad so many people were following the series and keeping in touch along the way.

Thank you for the time and effort. I myself do a lot of my own work and it is nice to see others doing the same. I read the comments and I'm surprised that some will criticize your methods. Maybe they don't understand that sometimes when you do it yourself you don't always have the proper $200 tool and have to think "outside the box". I like that when you have a problem you research it and make calls and then make a plan. I find this self-reliance is missing in a lot of people. Again keep up the good work and I'll be passing along your videos.

My main freight supplier is just now coming off a 1 year layoff and the mill is just now firing up and won't have much freight for a couple more weeks. If my company finds me something else before then, I'll let you know. It bobtails fine.
@flowmaster8027 жыл бұрын
I'm going to be rebuilding mine in a couple of weeks from now I watched all your videos on the rebuild this will be my first rebuild on a big engine as well I myself am a car mechanic also but I own my own truck now can you tell me where you got your parts from I've been looking around just trying to get some good prices
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
The machine shop that I used got the parts from somewhere in Georgia, I'll have to try to find the receipts later to tell you where. If yours is a 12.7L then my videos should be good but if it's a 14 L then there are a lot of differences, you can still follow my videos but you'd need to follow the book closely for the differences.
@flowmaster8027 жыл бұрын
Gordon Robertson ya its a 12.7 I live down by Houston TX and there's a shop there says they can get me my kit for 2700 and freightliner wants 3900 so I'm guessing there aftermarket parts but how did you do the breaking in procedure on your truck not sure if yours does but mine if cold will idle up about 1k rpms tell its warm then go back to about 600 I also bought the service manual for mine as well
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
My kit cost $2050 the break in procedure directions came with the kit and if I remember it said drive with a normal load for about 100 miles at the same speed at about three quarter Max engine speed, that was not an option for me so I bobtailed for 100 miles on the interstate and came home
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
All trucks run at high idle when cold the same as a car
@flowmaster8027 жыл бұрын
Wow much cheaper than what I'm looking at I'll probably end up do the same as you just Bob tailing for the break in I'll be uploading videos during the rebuild I'm new at uploading on KZbin I normally just watched videos but keep them videos coming I enjoy watching them thank you for the replies I'll let you know how it goes

What kind of oil pressure are you seeing after the rebuild?
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
About 30 at idle and 60 running, 70 at cold start up. I didn't change the oil pump, it has 1.5 million miles on it.

I've been thinking about those black smoke rings... They are very popular on KZbin [vortex gun, etc.] Perhaps if you adjusted one of the injectors to fire towards the end of an exhaust stroke you could have them back?
@57bagre7 жыл бұрын
You like those rings?
@amascia83277 жыл бұрын
When I was a kid, "The Smoking Camel Man - New York" billboard actually puffed real smoke. On a calm day, these puffs were beautiful smoke rings [aka vortex ring or toroidal vortex]. I was and continue to be hypnotically fascinated by them. Given the destructive nature of your smoke rings, I'm sure they are the last thing you'd want to see, eh? So, I was kidding about getting them back... especially at a cost of 1 mpg!
