Really not digging this fan cast. I think the one thing the show is doing better than the game is making the characters look like real people. In the game, Joel, Ellie, Tess, and Tommy were all great characters but their designs always felt really generic to me. Joel kinda just looks like a reskin of every square jawed video game tough guy. Ellie just looks like you drew a button nosed kid, not a real kid. I think these castings strip away the personality that the show is adding ti these characters looks. Tess especially, her actress has such a cool and realistic look. She also actually looks like her age, which I think adds a lot and sets her apart from other generic apocalypse characters.

Appearance isn't all that important unless a character has very particular look that's integral to them. But otherwise, I mean, look at two actors who have played Steve Jobs. Michael Fassbender, who looks nothing like Steve Jobs, was 1000% better than Ashton Kutcher, who bares somewhat of a resemblance to him. Daniel Craig doesn't resemble Fleming's description of James Bond at all, but he was incredible in the role, one of the best. Also, kind of hilarious that right after making a point that Bill's actor from the game would have been perfect for the show, you miss the fact that Marlene is indeed played by her actress from the game. Also, you make a point of Kate Beckinsale being older than the actress who plays Tess in the show but not looking it, but couldn't the same be said for Bella Ramsey, she's 19, but doesn't exactly look it.

I have never agreed less with one of your videos, Bryan. I honestly get the strong impression that the recasts for Ellie and Tess are mostly based on the actors not being pretty enough. Anna Torv looks like a woman who has lived through 20 years of the apocalypse, of course she's not going to be Beckinsale pretty. She's 43 to Pascal's 47 so totally age appropriate and she certainly doesn't look "too old" for him. If they cast Beckinsale and didn't try to make her look more worn I would be very annoyed. If you look at photos of Torv when she's not playing Tess and Tess from the video game side by side she's a good match. Ramsay is nailing Ellie. No, she doesn't look exactly like her, but who cares. Ellie was pretty "generic white girl" looking anyway. Ramsay may be 19 but she's small enough and slight enough to believably pull off 14 and she is 14 in the show, she says so herself. Besides the fact that "smart ass sassy child" is so much her wheelhouse it's not funny. Plus there's the logistic difficulties of casting an actual 14 year old to film the series. I kind of agree with Bill, but Offerman did do a great job. I know these are hypothetical and you said yourself you think the actors are doing a great job, but the recasts of Ellie and Tess just pissed me off, honestly.

So I think they wanted to make Ellie look like Ashley rather than like Ellie from the game. One thing about Ellie I think everyone is missing is there is a certain level of innocence to her that makes her such an engaging character in the first game. She's spunky, but naive and she doesn't feel that way to me in the show. I wanted a Tess who is an absolute badass in the show. She's the driver in the game, she leads the mission. But in the show she just isn't that. I couldn't stand her in the show and I'll never forgive them for the death they gave her in the show. So stupid. And as said in other comments, Marlene's actor is the one from the game.

I've been enjoying your fan and recast videos for years now and this is easily the one I agree with the least. The game had an amazing amount of depth in the personalities of Joel and Ellie but most of the side characters were relatively one dimensional stock characters and what the show is doing so well is adding depth to them as well. The biggest example is that I cannot imagine Bill from the game having anywhere near the depth and complexity that Nick Offerman brought in the show, it just wouldn't work to bring in the same actor and have him play that same version of Bill. Bella Ramsey still easily looks young enough to pass for 14 and has been killing it as Ellie, and casting actually children is always a hassle to do. No fucking clue what you were going on about with Tess especially, idk maybe you're becoming more like the industry casting directors who are terrified of women who look their age. Your problems with Bella and Anna Torv definitely just seem like they weren't conventionally attractive enough for you, the game versions of Tess and Ellie just kinda look like generic white woman and generic white teenager so I'm definitely glad they're moving away from that. (Joel in the game also just kinda looks like generic grizzled guy)

It’s a little funny to have the voice actor for Bill to play Bill but ignore that Marlene’s live action casting is the voice actor who plays Marlene in the game. Your Tess casting reasons is sliding into kinda misogyny thinking though. What do you mean “past her prime”? Anna Torv is close in age to Pedro Pascal, she looks like a woman who’s gone through a lot which is appropriate for the game, and she’s even similar in age to the voice and mocap actor for Tess. Not to mention the show sets Joel’s age to be in late 50s, so even if Anna looks “old”, well that is how a woman in her 50s ought to look. I feel like casting Kate and talking about how she looks without make up, it just seems like this is going for the conventional pretty casting that Hollywood tends to want to do. As for Ellie, casting a younger actor comes with a problem of the time jump for the second game. The casting you chose wouldn’t then really look grown up enough for what’s gonna be needed. And anyways, Bella can easily pass off as being a young teen, and her being 19, Ellie’s actual age in the second game, it makes her functionally perfect to be able to play the role after the time jump as well.

I was iffy at the start, but as each episode goes along I can see why they cast Bella Rammsy. It's extremely difficult when there's no bond between the characters.. My favourite casting for Joel would actually be Chip Esten. I haven't seen anyone else suggest him. But I think he's near perfect for the role in terms of look and voice, and he has great range as an actor. You should check him out in Nashville for his role as a recovering alcoholic that discovers he has a teenage daughter. There are some great father/daughter moments in the series as he learns to be a parent. He was also in Outerbanks more recently too, and if you want to see how he'd look as old Joel just check him out in the Carl's Jr ad listed below. I definitely think he'd fit the part! He's a little bit more emotive than Joel, but I could see him playing the character more reserved like the game. If we lived in a world where Pedro Pascal didn't exist, then for sure, Josh Brolin is PERFECT for Joel! Also, yeah, the casting for Tess, I wasn't that big a fan of, although thankfully, that didn't take away my enjoyment of the show. But there is one nitpick I complain about from episode one, and yes, it could fix your concerns on the "Tess doesn't seem like a badass" argument... Joel and Tess should've been the ones to kill Robert an his crew, not Marlene and the Fireflies. Give the audience a glimpse at just how dangerous Joel and Tess are and also show the audience why Robert was so afraid of Joel. I feel like we were kinda robbed of that. I mean, Joel and Tess didn't have to kill ALL of Robert's men... just Robert. Anyways, great casting choices, and the show is STILL amazing!

If not for Boyd, I’d say Ben Foster for Tommy. You can’t look further than Hell or High Water to tell he’d nail the role, from playing a brother in the movie, to the accent. Just tone down the jerkish behavior and it’s just perfect. Also, if she didn’t die just prior to the release of episode 3 of the show, Annie Wersching should have been Tess. She was the right age and she could have brought so much more to the character.

I do have some serious trouble liking perdo pascal as Joel and his brother Tommy. They've def should've went with Nikolaj and had a better casting for Tess and Marlyn. Personally I find all the castings for the show to be perfect except for Ellie. Nothing is that wrong with Bella but she just feels a little too old and not as child-like as Ellie looks in the games to me. Like, the only element that is lost (in looks and performance) is that slight naivety and harmlessness which will later become consumed by responsibility, grief, and vengeance. However, I am curious to see how fitting Bella will be in older Ellie's shoes
