This week, The Swaddle team explores how Sharat Katariya's 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' subverts how we view fat women and fatphobia on screen.
'Recasting' is The Swaddle’s video series where we analyse movies that defy the stereotypes of Indian cinema.

This was such a fresh film, and it was great to see Bhumi Pednekar as a protagonist. What was ironic was she had to then lose a lot more weight than she had put on for the film to be cast as the lead in future films.

As a child who has grown up being the 'fat' friend, this movie touched me so deeply, because not only did it make me realise that I don't need to be a size-zero to love and accept myself, but also gives me hope about the world, and about love, and that I too can find someone someday who accepts me as I am, without wanting to change me, someone who finds me beautiful. Lovely work The Swaddle. You keep blessing society with these videos. 💫❣️

I have a friend, she is obese, but her condition is due to family lineage, everyone in her family is obese. she used to starve herself, did exercise vigorously until she was hospitalised. But yet she didn’t loose any weight, I always felt bad for her, she was so anxious about her body, the way she looked and everyone used to either fat shamed her or used to give her gyan as in ‘how to loose fat’. Nevertheless I always used to encourage her that she looks fine and she is beautiful inside and out and if someone had to change it’s the people and not her. She had two failed relationships; both of the guy refused to acknowledge her in public, but secretly they used to date her. But after all this mess, she finally found her soulmate and now she is a mother of a 1 year old. Am so happy for her. This movie reminds me of her.

Bullying and making fun of people with high body fat helps no one . When will we understand this simple fact?! That’s the issue with Indian society. Instead of being compassionate about the condition, and showing empathy, and maybe better diet and exercise, people think making fun will “help”. Most obese people have emotional issues. Depression, PTSD , Anxity etc etc naming a few. It’s high time we, as a society, start becoming more compassionate towards people who tries to find comfort and safety in food! They are already miserable, these mean attitude does not help them.

In solidarity with the video however I would like to pinpoint how arranged marriage/ forceful marriage was normalised in the movie. Be it a man or woman marriage without consent shouldn't be promoted. It may have shown as a normal practice in Indian society yet I feel we should move ahead with this idea, Baby Mol of Malayalam movie 'Kumbalangi Nights' is a good example.

The fact that fat shaming is a problem is utterly undeniable but what's worse is that anybody has to learn to live with someone they don't connect with...like portrayed in this movie...It's almost as if giving in to the idea that"shaadi ho gayi fondness eventually develop ho hi jaati hai".That is an absurd notion,that shall not be encouraged.Neither of them were happy woman tried to make it work 'cause that's what expected of her,the guy was utter good for nothing entitled douche. In my humble opinion this particular film was quite regressive.Although on the plus side it had a unique way to tell a story and characters were not over the top.This movie wasn't about fat acceptance but rather about succumbing to the norm of"sanctity of marriage".

I'm so happy someone brought this up. The movie focused on fat phobia so much but entirely ignored the major issue that was so evident. Neither of these people even agreed to get married. The movie might highlight how Prem couldn't accept Sandhya because of his own insecurity but the truth is he couldn't accept her because he was wed by force to someone he didn't like from the start. I'd have preferred it if along with the fat shaming the movie called out the issue of lack of consent in arranged marriages... As much i like that the movie showed a heroine who was comfortable in her skin, i wish it had also shown how both Sandhya and Prem deserved to choose people they were physically and mentally compatible with.

I think one should try to lose/gain weight only if they themselves feel unfit in their current weight or find issues in their checkup. Everyone's body is different and so are their feasible weight range and structure. All these issues of shaming other people have always amused me. It's astonishing how small most people's minds are that they have nothing better to do than to discuss other people's attributes instead of discussing ideas that are actually worth something.

There should be no fat shaming. But there is also a right way to let obese people know that it is not always metabolism but something wrong with their body or dietary habits. Obesity leads to diabetes, tumors and a lot more problems. One should also not start praising and encouraging obesity. There are many women who gain a lot of wight post pregnancy and they live their normals lives without excersise or motivation to lose that extra weight, because people end up normalising that increased wight. India is the land of diabetes and it can be controlled by controlling fat intakes and losing wight to be within BMI
@erabhikdasgupta
@erabhikdasgupta 2 жыл бұрын
@Aria Kuchiki My mother was obese and didn't take action to control it on time because it's cool to be obese. Currently living up with diabetes, mastectomy and removal of uterus due to excessive fat disposition leading to tumors. So, not telling someone or making them understand why it is necessary to check your body vitals is a crime. I am not asking to go and tell them Mota /moti, etc etc. But make them understand the importance of being with BMI. No one in India goes to a doctor unless it's an emergency and that is the biggest problem. And to counter that you need to discuss. Fat shaming and education about obesity are very different. Sometimes, weight gain is not related to goos metabolism as was said in the movie. It can also be due to underlying problem like hyperthyroidism. My aunt HAD that and she suffered badly. Unless, you decide to do a full body checkup of your family quarterly, stop praising about obesity. There is a smart way to tell people, motivate people to be healthy. No one saying to demean them. It's as equal as saying someone... You can say "You are a mule in studies, you will end up working at a tea stall" or you can say "Don't worry, I am confident you can do it. Just stick to it. Don't give up that easy. "

@@asiddi821 i know you are, but with fat guys the marriage story won't even begin. And what you said is highly debatable, coz if a girl is married to a guy she loves then she should also become the girl he loves. Same is the case with arrange marriage as girls are married to rich guys or government servants. And, if a man doesn't helps his woman out (in this case daily chores and workout,) then he's unfit for living a married life.

yes it is a choice. but a slow metabolism is purely genetic and nobody should mock or bully others under any circumstance. only people with a non-existent self esteem do that. there is difference between constructive feedback and making fun of somebody.

@@ashwinidesai4051 Bullying and making fun of people with body fat helps no one . When will we understand this simple fact?! That’s the issue with Indian society. Instead of being compassionate about the condition, and showing empathy, people think making fun will “help”. Most obese people have emotional issues. Depression, PTSD , Anxity etc etc. It’s high time we, as a society, start becoming more compassionate towards people who tries to find comfort and safety in food! Yes...... Not a feminist but agree with you. None should bully someone for his/her appearance. If someone is fat its not necessary that the person himself is responsible for the bad shape he/she has taken. So rather than bullying, one should postively ask him/her about his shape first and try to analyse the persons condition by keeping yourself at that place and then only speak. Also one should speak only if he/she can convert those speeches into actions.

Ye wahi chiz create karne ki koshish ki gayi hai ki ek baar shaadi kar lo baad me pyar to ho hi jayega. Agar hm gender reverse kar de to log kahenge ki ladki ko haq hai apne hisab se pati chunne ka, kisi fat ladke ke saath jabjasti rahna society pressure hai aur hm aise bande ke saath kyu rahe jo khud ka care hi nahi kar sakta but jab women ki baari aati hai to ladka kuch nahi kah sakta . 😂 Esse bakwas movie Maine aaj tak nahi dekha.
