I've done a lot of recasting like this and I would recommend simply filling the entire tower with clay. The clay is cheap, and you can reuse it later for other projects. Also, building the mold boxes out of foamcore is good, but so are Lego bricks. I have a bucket of Lego and Lego knock off bricks I bought cheap that I use for this stuff.

for future reference, with silicon first carefully paint on a skin layer of the piece you are doing, stippling into any cracks and details, and on any edges that leaks may be an issue and wait for it to set, this will ensure you don't get any air bubbles trapped and don't get any leaks from your main pour :)

Nice job! I will always be a fan of getting the max amount of use out of those expensive plastic kits. A tip for plaster: You can coat it using poliurethane resin, the one you get in A and B components and is mix 50/50. The dry plaster is porous, and will absorb the resin, which will then cure from the inside of the plaster. Every porous material can ge given this treatment, like carboard or wood. Thanks for showing your mistakes too, it helps a lot.

as a tip there are DIY silicone molding techniques. from much cheaper store bought silicone. corn starch putty molds, and soap soft mold techniques. And if you're ok with using clear acrylic resin (that is much less thermo) can use much much cheaper/easier gelatin molding techniques. simple reality is. rubber silicone molds are just too expensive for one off casts. if you need to make a spare bit, or even a larger piece. highly recommend trying gelatin molds with clear acrylic resins. overall price point is much much less. (and gelatin is reuse-able ---just microwave/chill it each time need to recast/switch molds)

When you are making your first molds and casts, its only certain that some things will go the wrong way. You managed to have ALL things going wrong in ways I could never imagine! Congratulations, you are a hobby disaster pioneer 🤣🤣. Subscribed. On a positive note I really liked your build in the end. If you want a cheap way to make silicone molds for big terrain pieces, you can always try hardware store silicone caulking (the one that smells like vinegar) + corn flour. There are several videos online. Basically you end up with a silicone putty that you can apply over the object and it sets in about 20 min.

I messed about with this stuff for a while when I was hosting multiple games at home and needed more terrain... I was mostly casting up old sector mechanicus terrain etc... as youve found its a pain in the posterior to do, messy, prone to leaks, and after youve bought all the casting rubber, resin to cast, and then mixing containers and utensils etc... honestly Im not sure it not worth just buying the kits.... seems like a good idea , but... its a lot of work and effort. Now I mostly 3d print with PLA if I want more terrain... Good video though!

For your mold case, one thing to consider is making a very small batch, and using a cheap brush to paint a little bit in all the places you think the case might leak, let that set then mix the rest and do the actual pour (or if you have patience, do a water test to check if you've sealed it.)

Given how many GOOD tutorials there are on the Internet on how to make a silicone mold (i'll only mention Brick in the Yard, Smooth-On, Bill Duran or Robert Tolone for reference but there are dozens more, many from the prop making community), that was... painful to watch. Silicone is a pretty expensive material, you have to do the prep work if you want a successful cast that doesn't cost more than what you intend on copying. I hope you learned a thing or two from the experience.

Oh I surely did! I've got the process down now. I severely underestimated how much I would need to seal everything. Oh well, there are no mistakes... only lessons! 😅

I totally disagree. I'd much rather watch someone make an arse of something and explain how they learned from it rather than channels that just pretend to be perfect and hide their mistakes. Also it's way more entertaining watching him waste his money and make an arse of it.
