Fantastic video! Such a pleasure to see these beautiful, original, rare jazz pressings. Hats off to you Jason for tracking them down, bargaining for them, cleaning them and listening to them. It’s what this hobby is all about. And if that means some of your previous ‘forever’ copies get released back into the wild that will bring joy to others too!

Yup, I enjoy both the hunting/collecting element and the listening element. Nothing I own is a shelf queen - it all gets spun...eventually. With my old copies, they either go back into the wild or straight into the hands of friends. ~Jason

Thanks for a great video Jason. I've been a complete fan of John Coltrane's work for years and I love all his albums you mention here. As an older guy, I was fortunate enough to see John Coltrane live in concert at The Gaumont State Theatre, Kilburn, London in Nov 1961 with Trane , Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. - an absolute thrill for me, even though half the audiience just didn't get it then and walked out in the interval All the best / Steve

Hi Jason. The reason that some people In this Nov 1961 London Concert 'didn't get it' was that Coltrane introduced 'My Favourite Things' to UK audiences for the very first time ever. The LP Album of MFT was only released in the US a few weeks before this UK Concert, and certainly nobody at this concert had ever heard of it before. The dramatic change in Coltrane's playing from a strait ahead jazz style as in his Prestige Recording , to an exciting brand new 'avante garde' style (of MFT,) was a complete shock for all of us. Some people like me, loved tne new Trane.style strait away, others hated it from the start. hence those people who didn't get it. and walked out. Surely a Historic moment in Jazz

John Peel: "Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, 'Listen, mate, life has surface noise." Hi Jason, great video ! I share the same passion for vinyl, finding a good vintage pressing is all what this hobby is about . I used to own the 2014 Music Matters 33rpm (mono) BLUE TRAIN, later i have bought a 1971 UA reissue RVG STEREO : i have kept the reissue, and sold the MM (actually a very good sounding version)! The Acoustic Sounds Serie is also excellent : BALLADS, and, CRESCENT are really good value for the money ! .If you like Coltrane's music he did record for Prestige 1957 - 1958 there is a sampler called "More Lasting Than Bronze" (Prestige 24014) released 1972 , in Mono ! I've got the version with Van Gelder Stamper : sounds great !! and is not expensive :)

Hi - thanks for the note. I do love Coltrane and have some of his Prestige releases (Lush Life, Soultrane ) which are great. The UA mono are great releases, too! Especially for some of the heavy hitter titles. I’ve sold most of my MM reissues but still have some. They are great sounding. Cheers and good luck with the hunt! ~Jason

Great video Jason. I was ecstatic to see that NY 23 Blue Train (I clicked on the video thinking “there’s no way he got one!”). I came into possession of one last year and I couldn’t sleep for 2 days from how excited I was about it. Definitely the most prized piece in my collection. Happy to see the grails going around, yours is in a bit better shape than mine too. Solid finds as always man!

Great video Jason. I've been on a deep dive with coltrane recently. I've been struggling to get into his work. I do prefer his earlier stuff so far. My favourite album of his is Ellington Coltrane. I've been listening to it multiple times a day. I love it. I'm luke warm on everything else so far. I'm not a fan of blue train or love supreme but I'm trying.

Just getting into collecting Jazz. Been collecting vinyl since 75. Mostly Rock. Too bad for me. No telling How much Jazz I passed over. Will tell you I found a 10” Sydney Bechet at a thrift store recently for .49. Not sure the issue since I am on vacation. I believe it’s a 1950 record if memory serves me correctly. Enjoyed your video and your compassion for vinyl

Great finds, Jason! That A Love Supreme looks immaculate! Would love to find an original pressing! Blue Train with the NY 23 is a rare find, nice work on that one! My Favorite Things is a really great album, I just wish that the recording/mastering was better. I’ve noticed a lot of Atlantic records of this time period seem to sound great on the A side and then the B side sounds a lot duller, not sure what it is.
@TheJazzBasement2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe - Yeah the ASL really is top condition - its amazing what a good cleaning can unveil. I think the Atlantic stuff isn't quite up to the Blue Note, Contemporary, and Impulse level of recording quality. I haven't noticed a major difference between sides A and B - will have to listen a bit more critically. ~Jason
@analog_archive2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJazzBasement I agree! The Atlantic albums still sound pretty solid and I think I need to look into my copy of My Favorite Things again to see if I was just hearing stuff, but when you’re used to Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse, you get spoiled with how great jazz can sound!
@mattforwarding39162 жыл бұрын
How big is the jump when using the ultrasonic cleaner? My stuff is mostly pretty clean, but sometimes a 50+ year old record has crackle a typical wet clean just can’t get rid of. I’ve heard ultrasonic is great - but do you think its lowered the noise on any of your records?
@TheJazzBasement2 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt - Yes, the ultrasonic has definitely helped lower the noise floor on most of the records I've cleaned so far. Sometimes it can be dramatic, other times less so. But there is usually an audible improvement, particularly in quiet passages. It might not remove all the pops, but it can lessen them. It doesn't do much for tics and can't do anything for scratches. I cleaned a Kind of Blue OG mono and it went from VG+ to EX. I would say its worth it if in your budget. ~Jason
@Marit_tb2 жыл бұрын
Great stuff! I totally agree with you on his Atlantic output. After a love supreme he goes a little too crazy on Impulse. At least for my personal liking.
@TheJazzBasement2 жыл бұрын
Hi Martijn - thanks for the note. I agree with you on the Impluse output after ASL. I'm not giving up on it yet, just need to spend more time with it. Hard to do when the Prestige/Blue Note/Atlantic stuff is music to my ears! ~Jason

Hey Jason, I can relate to you regarding all-the-nuances of a true first iteration pressing of those grail Blue Notes. That's why I sold that copy of 'The Cooker' to HR Records...I want a true 1st copy. You have to do a LOT of thorough research not to get suckered into buying something believing it to be one thing when, in fact, it's another. Truth be told, they are both the same record label-wise...they just used a W. 61st cover instead of a W. 63rd cover from '58.
