I agree with you Lindsay that it can be confusing when the spelling is different. I find Regency and Victorian period books to be ok. However, if you get to Shakespeare or older books, the spelling is all over the place. You basically have to read it out loud to try to guess what is being said. As part of my English Lit major, we had to read the older than Shakespeare material and the spelling thing drove me nuts. I literally got a version of "The Canterbury Tales" with the old English on one side and the modern English on the other side of the page so I could understand what was going on. It was the only way I survived that course. I'm so grateful for the dictionary being invented and modern spelling conventions being solidified after that course.

I think reading classics through a current/modern lens doesn’t help one to understand the work. I didn’t pick up a Jane Austen until I was 40 and I think it worked because I listened to the Lit Life podcast alongside it. I hope you give Austen another try, and I recommend checking out the podcast I mentioned. It’s really changed how I read and helped me to understand and enjoy classics more. Regardless, happy reading! 😊

When I first read a Jane Austen book, Pride and Prejudice to be exact, I was not as impressed as I had hoped I'd be. It took me time and a wonderful mentor of sorts to show me the wonderful things Jane Austen has to offer in her books. When I first read P&P I was not a fan of Mr. Darcy but soon came to be a complete fan. I am not expecting everyone to be an Austen fan, but I do recommend rereading her books and following along with a solid podcast, (Close Reads by Goldberry Studios is one I highly recommend), because her books have so many layers to them. Please do not forsake Austen's books because they really are a treasure. They've made it this far for a reason. I am currently reading Emma and I agree that I am not a fan of the age gap. **shudder** It is also taking me an excruciatingly long time to read. However, I will note that her books are not speed reads either, they must be read with care and attention. Now, the only Jane Austen book I have completely read has been P&P, but I look forward to the others. Please don't take this as me criticizing you or anyone for that matter. I highly value classic literature and it saddens me to see people who are not fond of it. This is me caring for the mind of a reader.

I 1000% agree with you about that stomach wrenching age gap. Yes historical periods had age gaps, but thank God for modern day law to abolish them. It’s actually so messed up 🤢 … and you are not alone haha I read pride and prejudice and I DNF it 🙈, I know , shameful, but I gave it 2 out 5 stars, I will give her another chance just to be fair, because it may not be all her books. Thank for your video , it was great!

I love Emma, even if a lot of people doesnt like Emma as a character hahaha honestly at Austen time there would be no problem, even Sarah Kalley (christian missionary that moved to Brasil) married her husband that was 25 years older than her. I think yiu would like Persuasion more :)

I honestly didn’t mind her as a character, actually, unlike many it seems like! Thank you for the recommendation! 🥰💕

Love your thoughts on all these books! And your new set up and filming angle is great-I approve! 👍 And I’ve never read Emma nor plan too and that romance just sounds ick. Just, NO. It’s like when I read some MG and these 12 year olds have boyfriends and I’m just like ew, whhhyyyy????? 🤢😒 Can’t you at least be 15 before doing that? Yay for getting more physical books off the TBR!!!! 👏👏👏 I’m working on that too! The ebooks on the other hand…well, we don’t talk about those. 👀🫠😂 Also I asked Michaela Bush about how to pronounce Lanaria and she said there’s really no set pronunciation, lol. So the way you say it is how she said it but the way I say it is cool too-literally reader’s choice on that one!

Thank you so much, Sarah! 💗🥰 Yes!! It’s so sad to see that pushed nowadays in MG! ☹️ Oh yes, let’s not talk about ebook hoarding, hahaha! 😅🫣😂 Oooh, that’s good to know, thank you!! 💗

I do like your filming angle, I suppose I'll see how you continue on filming in the next several videos, as I am quite behind. Do you think in one of your videos you could explain why you are not a fan of classic literature? I'm simply curious now. I'm so happy you liked The Secret Garden and A Little Princess though.

Hi Lindsey! I like how you have your bookshelf’s organized by color and series. Nice setup for your video.😊💗📚 I just finished reading “A little princess” book this week.👑🐒 I like the “Secret Garden” book more. 🗝🚪🌳🌸🌼 I’m currently reading “Heart of a Royal” by Hannah Currie. I was wondering have you read the other two book in this series?

Emma was also my first (and thus far only) Austen. Yes it was way too long😂 I also watched a movie to try to motivate myself to read it. And yeah then I got to the end and it was like...I READ ALL THAT FOR THIS? I will say that I did like Mr. Knightley up until that point though 🤷♀️

Hi! Great wrap up, as always. I just read "A Little Princess" this month, but was not a fan unfortunately. I have "The Secret Garden" on my shelf to try this summer. About "Emma", completely agree. It is my least favorite Austen book. "Persuasion" is my top favorite Austen.

1:09:00 I prefer "The stones you throw will build my throne" but I am partial to Icon for Hire who wrote the song. I am glad there a good historical fiction books out there: the last couple I have read got so much wrong that the author's credibility was called into question.

I mean, Boaz is basically the Prince Charming of the Bible. 😂😂😂 Mrs. Witherspoon really surprised me with how much I loved it. I thought WWII wasn't my time period, but I really enjoyed that one. Re Lady's Guide, that sounds like the best version of enemies to lovers. That's why I think that trope usually fails; the author skips the all important friends step. "They don't just curse with those mouths; they also kiss." 😂😂😂 NNNNNOOOOOO EMMA!!!!😭😭😭😭 The only thing I'll add to kind of separate Knightley's actions from the way this would have been perceived today is that he never approached her about it until she was an adult, so it's not a grooming situation, which, admittedly, this would probably be considered in the modern day. I'll stop now and let you have your own opinions. 😂😂😂😂

late to the video, but I canNOT stand Emma! I absolutely loved Persuasion as a high schooler and I've liked Pride and Prejudice as an adult. But I agree with what some have said here, yes Austen's books are regencies, but you can't read them like a regency written today. The writing style is far from our modern style and for that reason I find listening to them (on 2 times speed) much easier to understand the storyline without getting bogged down. But also, yes, age gaps (and in other novels of Austen's, cousin marriage) was a product of the time period (something that we often find excluded in modern regency books)
