If you were a kid in the ’90s, it’s probable that you watched the animated series Recess. The adventures of TJ and his friends in the Third Street School were rebellious and exciting, and also brought some great lessons for the kids watching. Recess has kept the interest of fans for so many years, and we decided to ask ourselves… which characters were the most righteous? Who were the most evil? Who stands in between? @@zeospark9715 There was also the episode where Finster had to be on crutches for a while, and near the end of the episode after TJ convinces all the kids to behave until she's better, there's a moment between the two where they show that while they're indeed rivals, there's some level of mutual respect between the two. I'm paraphrasing the quotes. TJ: "Once you're better and that cast is off, we're gonna give you 100%." Finster: "I wouldn't want it any other way."

You left out the mayor. He's definitely one of the more evil characters considering he wanted to send TJ and his friends to 6 different schools just for accidentally breaking a statue they apologized for. Even Ms. Finster found this too extreme!

Well in some episodes especially season 1 she show unnecessary amounts of cruelty ,like using essentially mental torture on tj with the box, of course they made her less cruel as the series went on and she started showing a somewhat good side but she was still a cranky, fun hating grump

We see her happily interacting with her parents and even bonding with Spinelli after she reminisces about the past. In the one episode involving the kid who hates TJ, she tells TJ that she doesn't hate him. When we see Muriel not at School, she is alot nicer and subdued. One really good example of how Muriel really is was during the episode where Principal Prickley can finally become the Principal of a Middle School. Everybody wants him to stay and TJ asks Ms. Finster why she don't talk him out of it. She tells him that doesn't want to. That being a Middle School Principal has been his dream for so long that despite not wanting him to go, she doesn't want to stop him because his happiness is far more important.

Finster isn't that bad. She has shown that she cares for the kids many times. Protecting Gus from a bully, cutting loose to make Spinelli have a fun time when she was miserable, trying to keep the kids together after they accidentally destroyed the statue, the county fair moment, plus taking on terrorist in the movie completely unarmed.

I think that Recess is an example of a show with very few "evil" characters. The antagonists, for the most part, are not bad people, just people whose interests conflict with the main character's interests. Take Miss Finster, for example. Most of the time she just wants to stop fights, pranks, students in unauthorized areas, etc. Not an evil motivation, just one that acts against whatever hi-jinks the main characters are attempting.

Being an adult now, Principal Prickly does come off as sympathetic. He's just a man who takes pride in his work and wants to do his job well, but T.J. and his pals puts him through a lot of stress. I think you dont give Miss Finster as much credit as she deserves. Sure she can be cruel, but like Prickly she started off wanting to help the kids and I believe she still wants that. But the years got to her, and there's a particular event in "Guam" that gets mentioned in several episodes about her past. From what little I've pieced together I can only theorise that she had a marriage that broke up, or at the very least a significant other. Before anyone mentions her previous relationship with Dr. Benedict, that was a long time ago and it honestly seemed like they were dating at best. Whatever happened there, shes clearly a weathered woman fighting on because of her pride and dedication to her work. And there have been a few moments where shes shown fairness and even kindness, like how she punished Randall for starting the food fight despite the fact he's her main snitch. She didnt treat him with exclusivity once she was sure she knew it was him. Furthermore shes had a few heart to heart talks with Spinelli to help her through her issues. Finster literally lives alone with a catflap she uses to let in strays. So not only does she have a caring side but its clear shes lonely as shes willing to let in stray animals for company. She only has her job and thus she wants to keep order to help make Principle Prickly's life (as well as hers) easier.

1) Why? Miss Finster has shown numerous times she actually cares about the kids, especially after Season 1. She's a teacher, it's literally her job to be tough on them. Catch her off school time and she's really a lot nicer. (The episode where Spinelli spends the night with her or the Halloween Special) and she even kicks ass to help them in the movie. 2) The Diggers are not good. They are selfish, and in kind of an abusive relationship. (see the episode where they break up and it really shows how much of an asshole one is but how co-dependent they are)

For personal matters there's another Recess character who's one of the best and he's cool he's Butch and he's the bearer of bad news and he's good and friendly and he gets along well with nearly everybody and he's a token good teammate and he's willing to help the gang anyway he can. Best of all Butch is a great recurring character and he's very intelligent.

I disagree with King Bob and Miss Minster's ranking. Yes King Bob may be a bully at times (I'm not going to excuse that) but he shows more development than either Lawson's crew or the Ashleys. Unlike the Ashleys who sometimes can't take criticism (like how they reduced TJ and Spinelli's ranking when they called out on the stupidity of their ratings or when they entered Spinelli into the beauty contest), he doesn't mind when people don't like him (he even invited TJ to a roast). And he does learn from his mistakes although he's not perfect. After he apologizes for the pyramid incident and repeals the gum tax he hasn't made any public work projects since then. He's changed from the boy who enforced the new kid rule to choosing Gus to be his substitute. Sure he still wanted to get back at TJ for getting more attention than when he was the prankster prince, but by the end of the episode he and TJ shake hands and even admits to himself that he likes him. But one of the hallmarks of his character is when he goes back to Third Street School and corrects King Freddy's behavior and showed Lawson why its wrong to look down on others. And this is coming from the same guy who much like everyone else, treated kindergardeners like horses rather than kids; but by the end of the episode he gains a new insight from tubby and even though he may not entirely agree with it; he still grants the wish. In summary a lot of times he's simply enforcing the unwritten rules of the playground. And he knows how to balance the rules and what is fun. Miss Finster should at least be the same if not more "evil" than Prickly. She's just enforcing the rules but even she is flexible when she feels its only fair. In a way she's Spinelli's Prickly, and doesn't make fun of her when she has her first crush. She's responsible for getting Spinelli back in the Halloween spirit and doesn't even judge her feelings. She rejected Benedict because of his stands on Recess and once she found out that Benedict was behind the plot to stop Recess and was using armed henchmen to do so and when the police refused to believe her, she gathered up the rest of the faculty to help in the fight. I respectfully disagree with the rankings of these 2 characters.

Funfact: Dr Slicer is voiced by Tim Curry! Also, you forgot to add a 3rd major villain: DR WHITE! The guy is literally TJ's anti-thesis when it comes to having fun at school! And speaking of villains, there is a 4th major villain as well: MAYOR FITSHUGH! The guy almost separated the main cast and TJ didn't have any plan to counter his judgment until one good character you didn't include appeared and I consider this guy to be even over than Mikey when it comes to goodness: I'm talking of course about THADDEUS T. THIRD THE FIFTH (rolls over your tongue I know) I know so much about Recess! Heck I watched the series in English, French and Arabic! HELL, Funfact about me, I got the best grade in French Essay Writing in 8th Grade because I took the idea from the Recess Episode Operation Field Trip (French version)!
