Recessed Can Shelf - Using Unusable Space For Cans

We took an unusable pantry wall and built recessed, internal shelves between it's studs to make a sort-of hidden can shelf rack. It holds over 100 cans and is clearly the greatest can storage shelf rack built since 1980. At least we think so.
The recessed shelves were necessary because the pantry is narrow and could not support shelving, or really anything else, on that wall. But now the wall is a major storage unit and all of our cans are easily visible and accessible. We've only had these new shelves for a few days and we are already in love with them!

It's absolutely true! A large percentage of our projects were built because we wanted to simplify or automate some mundane task. But motion sensors in closets rock and now we never want to live without them!

Very cool project. I plan to do something similar. Just an FYI, though - most studs are 16" OC (on center), not 16" apart. A nominal 2x4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5 inches as you mentioned. Since each stud is 1.5 inches wide, you have 0.75 inches of each stud contained in the 16" measurement. 2 x 0.75" = 1.5". 16" - 1.5" = 14.5", which is what you were measuring. Your studs are still 16" OC.
@AtomicDairy

You are completely correct and I stand corrected! I should have figured that out before I made a video. But I'm glad you will be doing the same thing. You will not be disappointed!

I opened my wall just to see if there were pipes ect in there. Once I did, I felt so much air. Once I put backer board ect, will that seal the air leaks or do I need to do more to insulate the area?
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 күн бұрын
I would think the backer board would seal things up nicely, but you'll have to recheck once you build everything.

Love the honesty! Q for you. Why didn’t you just add a back board and add shelves to the studs directly instead?
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Do you mean a back board on top of the studs? The passage is super narrow and that would have blocked the way. So we took the shelves into the wall instead.
@angellas.1314
@angellas.1314 2 жыл бұрын
@@AtomicDairy I meant a back board between the studs? And put shelves in between that way? With pegs in the studs themselves?
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 2 жыл бұрын
Ah. We did talk about doing that and making the shelves adjustable. We decided to keep it simple for this first embedded shelf effort and learned a lot. If we do this in the future we'll likely put in a header, remove the studs entirely, and use pegs like you suggest but in thinner boards. But even this version has turned out to be wildly popular in the pantry and we no longer have cans on our other shelves.

@@angellas.1314That is what I am thinking of doing keeping the studs in a 7 foot span wall adding shelf’s to the studs. Also adding to the outside wall for a deeper shelf.

Your studs are standard. 16" stud spacing is on-center. That's not the space between. The standard void space for 16" on center studs is 14.5'. Congrats, your house is per spec.
