As a cricket fan who lives in England the quality between these two sides is massive. If you hear Australia are batting first you fully expect 400, if England bat you expect 260 to 280 if things go their way. Very few England players would get into an eleven of these combined teams. I fully expect Anderson and Broad to retire after this series and with Woods being quick but injury prone they are going to be huge boots to fill. England are in transition for a few years for sure. Five nil for this series is a huge possibility and if I was in the Aussie camp I'd be relishing every second of inflicting more misery on the old enemy. May good hard intense cricket prevail !!!!

Interesting point you make. Jo's Buttler and Jason Roy against the same line-up of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood were smacking them around the park in T20 WC group stage match. Yet change the format and their mindset changes and they look lost. If they just batted 10 overs at T20 mindset, they would still contribute more than England's top order is doing now.

I remember a post-retirement Sanga, who was doing a stint in Surrey for a season or two, saying that one of his teammates had the weirdest technique he's ever seen, and that it was a complete mystery to him (Sanga) how this teammate scored any runs at all. I'd forgotten the name of the team-mate, until said team-mate made his debut for England and was opening the batting. It's not like cricket isn't welcoming of weirdo techniques either. This is a game where someone who batted like Chanderpaul scored over 10k runs, where Graeme Smith could score mostly on the legside for close to 12 years while opening for SA. This is a game that allows someone with so many moving parts to his batting like Smith prosper. Point is that it is possible to have a weird AF technique and still score runs. But there is such a thing as timeless fundamentals. Rory's head and feet are all over the place, and not to even mention the backswing coming from 2nd slip and then going around his front pad like that. None of the weirdo techniques I mentioned above looked weird once they go from the stance to getting into a position to play a shot. Rory looks weird from the moment he picks up a cricket bat to being in position to play a shot. I was watching discussion on batting techniques in County Cricket with Athers, Nass and Mark Butcher. Two opening batters, one of them a number 3, none of them the prettiest batters in their time, but all of them were fundamentally sound. And none of the three could understand the trends in coaching batting at the county level. Everything from the off stump guard that a lot of the English lads take, to backswing coming from second slip to gully, the exaggerated straightening of the heads. Everything looks like an alien species recreating what they think cricket batting should look like.

@@drdhakan87 England can still win or draw the series, they're professional highly skilled players, just that each player must rise to his highest potential, like how Pakistan won the ODI world cup, Imran Khan came to bat when 4 or 5 wickets were down, but he rose to the occasion and did the job, that's what's missing in england, no man is willing to rise up, its a personal determination/decision each must make, luck plays a very little role. We dont need heroes, that's another myth, always relying on Ben and Root, england has to realize each player has the potential, in that realization and self-trust, self-determination, england can certainly fight back.

The greatest disappointment for me is Australia have literally done everything we expected, the line and length are as short and aggressive as the conditions support. Technique and mental strength were always going to be examined. And after months of preparation we fail the f*$%king exam like we didn't see it coming. @andrewdeacon8315 2 жыл бұрын
Yep Lawrence got two big hundreds for the lions in Australia last year , and despite Crawleys loss of form his game is made for Australia, I’d replace buttler with bairstow as well , just gotta take those catches. Once the ashes have gone I’d give Mahmoud a chance to as he’s out there. Shame Parkinson was sent home , he did well for England in white ball cricket and has a decent 1st class record playing on a good pitch at old Trafford. Problem is none of England’s reserve batters have had any game time , why weren’t they in the lions match?

I agree with all that. The question is what does England do?? For me, they should bring in Zac Crawley, Johnny Bairstow, Jack Leach and Mark Wood. Make Stokes captain and go from there. This is for Melbourne Test. But the team is hampered by an inept selection panel that have no idea and the decisions are hurting the series as a spectacle. Fight hard Poms, like they did last day in Adelaide. All they can do.

Ponting, has too much to say about the English Batsmen. Although, i am not a huge fan of Burns. The guy, just looks way too intense at the crease, and yes he moves way too much. Burns should not be in the Test side.Haseeb, he needs to pull his socks up and bat. However Eng has been let down by their bowlers. Simple. Woakes, he is bowling 70 to 75mph. Stokes barely touching 80. Broad also just tickling over 80. Anderson is probably the quickest at the age of 40. Starc is not shy of getting the ball up to your ribs and above. England need similar aggression. It is a Test Match and it is the Ashes. You need to intent to bring some hurt.

Hammid is a useless batsman tbh. He might be good for T20 but he is not a test player, same goes for Burns. England's top order is a disaster and India took advantage of that when they came to England. To win a series in Australia, you need to dominate all sides including fielding which has been below average in whole series. England has no plan or counter plan against Australia, they had to bad only 20 more overs to draw this test, each batsman had to play 2 overs on average but they couldn't do it. I would go full offense now, defence never work against australia in australia.

Not completely true. In my opinion you can save a test match in Australia but for that you need sheer determination which I don't think England team has except root and Malan. One example of a test match being saved in Australia is India vs Australia SCG test. But yes it is a rare thing.

Hameed has a good technique and whatever ponting said about him was true also he has a bad habit of dropping wrist for short of good length balls , in England it's fine because ball doesn't bounce as much but in Australia that's the length to play on the backfoot rather than frontfoot with lil high elbows

“The retention of the hapless Haseeb Hameed over the team's senior opener of the past three years, Rory Burns - for crimes against communication apparently, which perhaps says as much about who he was communicating with than anything that he didn't have to say for himself. Burns' first-ball humiliation at the Gabba may have entered Ashes folklore, but aside from Root, there was no other specialist batter in England's starting XI with multiple Test centuries to his name, nor anyone else with as many as 500 runs in 2021. Of all the moments to presume that Burns was the team's most pressing problem, this was surely not it.”

Hameed needs to go. imo Burns may not have the technique but he definitely has the temperament as he's shown with multiple hard fought 50s and 100s in the past. Stome solid determination required of opening batsmen, he has it. But Hameed has neither the technique nor the temperament(not to mention he looks like a homeless 14-yo, very unathletic). Bring in Crawley for one of the two either way, and Parkinson or Moriarty as the spinner

there is no international player of any significance barring joe, milan, strokes( getting in to form) and butler. rest all are pedestrian. they dont know how to play on the bounce. lack of practice also shows. england are extremely ill-prepared. even the bowlers have sucked not able to clean up the tail. they made aussie batting looks awesome when it is really not. indian fight-back is dearly missed. zero interest in ashes. empty stadiums by second day and tv revenues also will suck. last year india made bumper money to aus, this nope! i cant recall watching one section properly.

It's not about talent or technique. It's about state of mind and the difference in that between the England white ball and red ball teams is stark. Root is probably England's best ever batsman but he's a hopeless captain. I'd be tempted to put Morgan in the test team just to be captain.
