Hi Recky, the Vulcan could actually fly at 63,000+ft they stayed down at 56,000ft as the Russians didn't have anything that could get higher. The USAF found a solution to the problem......They stopped inviting the RAF. Btw, check out one or two clips of "the Vulcan Howl", the engines on full power produce a noise like a banshee, and it feels like the air is being ripped apart. Also, Mark Felton manages to uncover stories from WW2 that no-one else does.

Have a look for the Vulcans only active missions, then the longest bombing raids ever. Search for Operation Black Buck during the Falklands War, the mental gymnastics to plan to get one bomber over Port Stanley is mind-boggling. It still is the longest raid, with the airborne support originating from the same base as the Bomber.

I was lucky enough to see a Vulcan air display some years ago. The 'howl' is something else! Sadly, there are none left now that still fly.

I was completely unaware that this had happened. Apparently almost all Americans also were in my same boots. Things were so scary back then that I think I’m glad I didn’t know or I would’ve been much more worried about a potential Soviet attack.

@@william6682 Who said anything about better? People who have never been to America frequently have a difficult time comprehending exactly how large the country is. The video does a really good job of helping others truly wrap their minds around the USA’s actual size. I recommended it because I’m sure they would enjoy it. I’m not trying to say anyone is better than anyone else.

That's the whole reason why NATO runs exercises. Just a few years ago the US Navy "lost" an aircraft carrier to a French sub in a naval exercise. That one did make the news. Covering up failures is the worst thing you can do. Notice how the US air defenses learned nothing and failed even worse the second time.

That French sub was actually a Swedish Gotland class sub, it also happened with a Collins class Australian sub.

josephbucknavage6739 I could be mistaken but from what i can remember when i look into carrier event the US military handicap itself. The point of the game was to assess the ASW ability of a US Carrier by itself. The problem with taking this at face value is an Aircraft carrier is never going to fight a submarine by itself its going to have an entire battle group with ships specialized in ASW. An Aircraft carrier carries aircraft it is not an anti Submarine vessel.

The US routinely handicaps the capabilities of their vehicles in joint training exercises. The point is to to fail in training so you see where to improve. And let's be honest, we wouldn't be able to learn anything from the other members of NATO if we didn't tie both hands behind our back first.

There is film of a Vulcan doing a barrel roll which was then restricted to normal flight .

Another great one Recky. This one has me chuckling. Our Vulcans weren't allowed to operate at their highest levels. I heard a tale I heard & hope is true (but I am Very doubtful it is). Apparently the Vulcan which landed in NY wasn't even noticed until it had landed & radioed in asked which hanger he could park his Vulcan in. We ran rings around the US here. The 2nd time we played a really sneaky trick. We changed tactics. This is the whole point of military mock engagements. Learn your faults. Learn from your enemy. Adapt to overcome the foe

Maybe the Brits used the "Hush A-Boom" from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons show so nobody noticed! (I can't explain Rocky and Bullwinkle. Look up some of their old cartoons)

Like you, Recky, I think this was a good idea. You can’t fix it if you don’t know it’s broken. I think the reasons for keeping them secret were two fold. 1) We couldn’t let Russia know, because they hate(d) the U.S., and could possibly do something really stupid. 2) We were in the Cold War, and most Americans would have freaked out. I’m old enough to remember “duck and cover” drills at school. All classes would get down under their desks, and cover our heads. I remember thinking it was kinda dumb to “hide” from a nuke. I knew why we had them, but if one hit really close you’d be a burnt rotisserie chicken under your desk.

Remember England invented both radar and sonar. The only shared the tech with the US when WWII was under way and just prior to Pearl Harbor, The site there was brand new and was ignored by brass on Dec. 7 as we expected a flight of bombers from CA. Nothing on the scale of the assault but our techs were still learning to read the returns.

As long as lessons were learned America should feel no shame. The important thing is you DID test your defenses and found opportunities for improvement. Let's not forget, these exercises were planned, the US knew those planes were on their way. In a real conflict there will be no warning and no time to prepare.

The whole point of NATO exercises to test tactics and strategies. Show up what works and what doesn’t, so that we can adapt or remove whatever proves ineffective. I think people forget these days that no matter how many smart systems we have, in war people will be killed. Our enemies have not sat idle developing their own smart systems. These exercises are insanely complicated to plan, and massively expensive to run, but I’d rather lose money testing our equipment and plans, than lose countless lives should a war break out because our militaries relied upon untested theories and assumptions. Dr. Felton is a great historian, but I feel he fails to point out the main reason the US clamped down on the outcome. Yes, a lot of the American military was embarrassed that the UK were successful, but mainly they hushed this up so as not to give the USSR a huge clue in what area to focus their own air developments. No boxer gets in the ring and says, “Oh yeah, by the way, buddy, I have a glass jaw.” There is no shame in “losing” if you learn from it. Have a great day.

Hi Recky. When we were vacationing in Colorado Springs last month. My son who lives there. Showed us where NORAD is. To see it even from driving down below. Was a sight to see. I thought safe and scary at the same time. It is nestled way up high in a mountain and you can see all the tall poles ( I don’t know the name for them but like satellite poles or some kind of electrical poles). Leaves one wondering all what is going on inside that mountain, all top secret Im sure.

99% effective, who knows what percentage efficient? Someone should have told the US that the first time was OK you know, allies and exercises etc. because we learn more from mistakes but allowing it to happen again is, Oh can't remember something about expecting different results.

I wonder if it was misdirection aimed at the Russians who will have known what happened and so would have begun investing in research and development of an expensive time consuming high altitude bonber if their own, in so doing the US will have known they would easily have technology to deal with it but if you can force your enemy to commit to developing pointlessly then you are controlling them.

Now its worse as our new submarines are even better especially the new dreadnought class , also many many land exercises have been won by t g e uk national forces last year was a good example, us marines surrender too british commandos, having the largest best equipped military is no defence against experience.

We don't keep changing our name it's just you don't know anything! United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, four countries combined into a Kingdom. Great Britain is the geological name for the largest island that only contains England, Scotland and Wales and the other island is called Ireland that contains two countries, Republic if Ireland (Not part of UK) and Northern Ireland (Part of UK). We don't change the name, it's you that ignorant of other countries. It like someone saying you change the name of your country from America to USA and North America.

Because your an isolated nation you don't understand the outside world. Because of poor American education you really should get some outside help to understand what those names refer to. If you want to find us we're where we've been for over a thousand years. But if the USAF can't find eight brilliant RAF Vulcans I doubt you can find the UK, Britain or England (all in one place) , we're close to Europe. where's Europe you say? Google it.
