SpaceX CEO Elon Musk talks with Recode's Kara Swisher and The Verge's Walt Mossberg about his plans to send a one-way rocket to Mars in 2018. He estimates colonists could start arriving on the Red Planet by 2025. Musk also talks about the proliferation of electric vehicle initiatives that compete with his other company, Tesla, and why autonomous cars will become the norm. He says he doesn't see Google as a competitor, but that "Apple will be more direct." Plus: Why Musk wants more people to have access to the power of artificial intelligence.

But no for the love of effing god do not compare him and Einstein in the same sentence. You have no idea about the contribution of Einstein to Modern World and Physics at large. He always speaks in such a disjointed staccato and it probably reasons out on many factors I'd think. It's likely he contemplates these issues in 4 dimensions, and discusses them similarly when in comfortable company. I bet he bounces into and over subjects wildly, and those who are familiar and can follow this Tigger like processing see a much more comfortable speaker. He will never be able to speak his thought processes in cogent and cohesive fashion--he's thinking about multiple tangents (bounce), constantly introducing, testing (bounce) and revising the ideas as he goes. And he may visualize these, and have to convert (bounce) those images into words to convey the ideas where he has already eliminated a thread of the idea (bounce) he was pursuing and beginning to explain (bounce). The woman isn't as bad as a lot of people seem to think, she's more Pigglet acting as a traffic cop trying to keep it more main stream--KISS-- keep it short and sweet or (simple for stupid). But she misses the point (bounce) of a mind that works like his. If you step back and (bounce) just wait after baiting the hook, you'll see his mind weave through the obvious (bounce) (bounce) and start to associate unrelated concepts (bounce), non linear processes (bounce), and an intuitive debate (bounce) take shape within. And (bounce) he does not explain in generalities, (bounce) and is aware that he often confuses (bounce) and looses an audience when he answers the question asked, (bounce) then answers the unasked questions he believes important or necessary (bounce) to the question already answered. Either that or Cocaine is a very important food group in his diet -- (bounce) -- IMO

Doesn't being self conscious prove we are not a simulation? And anyhow, a simulation of what? Other beings that have a higher level of consciousness than us? Is that even possible? As it is we tend to want to 'numb ourselves down' as we have a hard time handling the amount consciousness we have. Good try Matrix but somehow don't think so. 00:00 🚀 Elon Musk discusses the landing gear issue during his flight and the importance of safely landing rockets. 01:22 🌐 Musk explains the significance of landing orbit-class rockets on both land and a drone ship in the ocean, highlighting the role of horizontal velocity in achieving orbit. 02:42 🌌 Understanding the distinction between space and orbit, Musk clarifies the role of velocity and escape velocity in achieving a stable orbit around Earth. 06:13 💸 Musk emphasizes the physical challenges of bringing a rocket back to the launch site due to the immense energy required to reverse its velocity, not just for cost savings but feasibility. 09:27 💰 Discussing the importance of reusing rocket boosters, Musk likens it to saving a "pallet of cash" and underlines the economic significance of reusability. 10:36 🚀 Musk highlights SpaceX's achievement as the first time a rocket booster has returned to the launch site from an orbital mission, distinguishing it from previous space exploration efforts. 13:03 🌌 Musk shares his vision of making humanity a multi-planet species, extending civilization beyond Earth, and exploring other star systems for an inspiring and exciting future. 14:37 🚀 SpaceX aims to launch Falcon Heavy by the end of the year, a rocket with two-thirds the thrust of the Saturn 5, and plans to reuse landed rocket boosters in future missions. 16:32 🛰 Musk discusses the high launch cadence, exceeding other countries, due to the demand for commercial satellite launches, including a new Iridium constellation. 17:38 🚀 Preparing for Mars colonization, Musk plans to present the architecture for large-scale transport of people and cargo to create a self-sustaining city on Mars at the IAC in September. 20:27 🌌 Musk expresses the goal of transporting millions of tons of cargo to Mars for colonization, emphasizing the need for large-scale infrastructure to sustain and grow a city on the planet. 21:21 🚀 Elon Musk outlines plans to send a mission to Mars with cargo flights starting from 2018 onwards and potential crewed missions by 2024, aiming for arrival in 2025. 22:40 🌌 Musk hints at the development of a "very big" rocket for Mars, emphasizing the need for substantial size and power. 24:45 🚗 Tesla aims to scale up production and accelerate the advent of sustainable energy, with plans to reach half a million cars by 2018 and possibly a million cars annually by 2020. 26:19 🤖 Elon Musk sees Google as a potential partner, not a direct competitor, in the autonomous transport space, while expressing uncertainty about Apple's timeline for entering the market. 29:49 🔋 According to Musk, no traditional car company has yet produced a "really great" electric car, emphasizing the importance of decreasing the cost per unit of energy for broader electric vehicle adoption. 30:33 🏭 Musk discusses the Gigafactory's role in battery production and mentions the focus on optimizing costs per unit of energy to make electric cars affordable. 34:07 📈 Energy density improvement in batteries is essential for electric cars, and Musk claims an annual increase of around 5%, emphasizing the significance of design iteration and economies of scale. 35:57 🚗 Tesla receives around 400,000 pre-orders for the Model 3, demonstrating strong consumer interest in affordable electric vehicles. 37:33 🌐 Musk downplays the role of personal charisma, giving credit to Tesla's team for creating compelling products and the company's success. 40:39 🤖 Elon Musk expresses concerns about the potential negative impact of artificial superintelligence, highlighting the importance of responsible AI development and co-founded OpenAI to ensure ethical practices. 43:18 🌐 Elon Musk discusses OpenAI's goal of democratizing AI power to prevent concentration in the hands of a few, quoting Acton's idea that freedom involves the distribution of power. 45:08 🌐 The primary objective of OpenAI is to take actions that increase the probability of a positive future, guiding and shaping AI development for the benefit of humanity. 46:18 🌐 Musk expresses concern about concentrated AI power, emphasizing the importance of broadly distributing AI capabilities to prevent misuse by a single entity. 53:17 🌐 Musk mentions a potential solution for human-AI symbiosis called "neural lace," a direct cortical interface that could eliminate the input/output constraint and enhance human capabilities. 57:15 🌐 Discussing the future impact of advanced AI, Musk suggests that humans could become like "house cats" in comparison to ultra-intelligent AI, highlighting the need for a symbiotic neural interface to stay relevant. 01:06:16 🚀 SpaceX aims to gather revenue on Earth to fund the development of a transport system for establishing a city on Mars. 01:07:10 🌌 Establishing transport to Mars by SpaceX can enable entrepreneurial activities on Mars, creating opportunities from ore refineries to pizza joints. 01:08:07 🍕 SpaceX anticipates getting to Mars in under three months initially, with the goal of eventually reaching Mars in under a month. 01:09:27 🚗 Designing the Model 3 for manufacturability is a key focus, learning from challenges faced with the Model S and Model X. 01:13:26 📅 Elon Musk asserts that the schedules he sets for projects are not knowingly fake, though delays may happen due to unforeseen issues. 01:15:36 🕹 Musk discusses the simulation theory, arguing that the rapid advancement of video game technology implies a high probability that our reality is a simulation. 01:18:33 🚗 Musk believes fully autonomous driving is technically possible within two years, but regulatory approval may take an additional year. 01:21:30 🤖 While Musk favors freedom and opposes banning humans from driving, he suggests that license requirements for manual driving may become more stringent. 01:22:38 🗳 Elon Musk envisions a direct democracy on Mars, with people voting directly on issues to minimize the potential for corruption.

I love how he repeatedly says "well, if nobody does it then I guess I will do it". He encourages others to innovate but understands that not many people have the drive, ambitions, and priorities that he has. I wish I had the opportunity to explore and help move some of his ideas forward. Perhaps one day I'll be able to join one of his ventures.

Within first 10 mins, interviewers made me sick and then I decided to validate my hypothesis by looking at the comments. And, in no time it got validated. I'm amazed at the extent of unawareness with which these people were allowed to interview Musk. This is indeed painful.

***** Indeed. And i love the way he talks about himself, he is so open minded and sometimes he seems to be a bit .. i dont know, nervous oder shy ? I like how he stutters and that he laughs about fails ( relating to the Falcon 9 crashes ). It makes him symphatic and then combined with the fact that all the things he do are for the sake of human progress. I bet he is the kind of guy who would give Cars away for free if he could, just to make the World a better place. I cant wait to see what he'll do in the future and what he will achieve.
