don't start them out with pictophonetic characters. Instead, focus on pictograms, ideograms, and combined concept characters (huiyizi). Pictophonetic characters are built from them, so we must learn them first, and there are so many exceptions to pronunciation of pictophonetic characters due to language drift that they confuse and frustrate ANY beginner, including highly educated polyglots. Speaking from experience...
@GraceMandarinChinese3 жыл бұрын
@@QuizmasterLaw Thank you for the suggestion! I’d like to teach these semantic and phonetic components in the video because more than 90% of Chinese characters are pictophonetic characters, so I think knowing these components is going to help students a lot. I know there are exceptions so I’ve mentioned it at 00:54. :)
@QuizmasterLaw3 жыл бұрын
@@GraceMandarinChinese Yes, true fluency is impossible without the pictophonetic characters but so many CSL learners just give up on even learning the characters and wind up stuck at A2/HSK2 oral. I just mean to put this in one of your advanced play-lists. Pictophonetic characters are not for beginners. Great video with simplified and traditional!
@QuizmasterLaw3 жыл бұрын
@@GraceMandarinChinese 90% are pictophonetic but the most frequent characters really are pictographs, ideographs, and combined concept characters (hui yi zi).

These videos are amazing holy cow! I love how you structured everything, that you separate traditional from simplified, and that you pronounce slow and normal speed. It's really cool to see how you write the characters as well! So glad I found your videos, keep up the good work!!

Nice video! It’s so fascinating how all these words are somehow connected to a main semantic or phonetic component. This reminds me a bit of “root words” in other languages.🤔 Knowing these components is very helpful so I’m putting all of these in my notes. 謝謝Grace老師!

Thanks for your video! I'm a Japanese and studying 台灣華語. It is very easy for Japanese to memorize Taiwanese words because Taiwanese words resemble to Japanese ones in writing. All Japanese study 六書 (象形,指事,會意,形聲,轉注,假借) in elementary and junior high schools. Thus I noticed that this video showed the structure of 形聲文字. However, some of Taiwanese words don't resemble to Japanese ones in pronunciation. Thus listing examination is very difficult!!

As always, really great video! Personally I would prefer if the traditional and simplified examples were just shown at the same time. Overall I felt the pace was a little slow because of that separation, and it would have been nice to have some more examples. A few videos dedicated to the most common semantic radicals, and a few on the most common phonetic-hint radicals would be amazing. The phonetic-hint radicals helped me a little when I learned Japanese and given they're even more useful and reliable in Chinese languages it's a really huge benefit to learners! Thanks for always using Zhuyin btw. I'm trying to learn Taiwanese flavoured mandarin so it's a big plus for me.

I like it but this should be seen as an advanced video. Basically CSL should concentrate on pictograms, ideograms, combined concept characters, in that order until B1. That sucks for HSK4+ me (am I hsk5 yet? no, of course not...). But JUST getting people to A2 with the 1000+ ideograms pictograms and combined concept characters would really set them on the way to the pictophonetics. Also... pictophonetic characters are not composed randomly. The pictographic and phonetic elements are complimentary and reinforcing. So... the phonetic element often also has semantic or pictographic content and so also the semantic component often also has pictographic and/or phonetic content. Some pictophonetic characters have both the initial and final indicated by each half, though that is rare and i can't think of a good example right now. Also, the pictophonetic characters tend to be read out from right to left and top to bottom.

"So, chinese characters are too hard to learn so we are going to simplify stuff so it is easier to learn" "Oh, good!" "Yeah, there are these new characters that have fewer strokes, so it is easier to write" "Nice, so I don't need to learn the old ones? They are not going to be used anymore, right?" "Oh, no, you still need to learn those. It's part of the culture, you know." "Oh, great! Know I have double the amount to learn. What are the benefits?" "Well, they have fewer strokes, so it is easier for you to learn how to write them?" "What is this 'writing' stuff that you keep talking about? Is it like typing?" "Oh, boy..."
