Hi Xobad, Thanks for your patience. Your example sentence actually has no subordinate clause; it is a one-clause sentence (an independent clause). It begins with a noun phrase as its subject ("Driving fast downtown") which complicates the sentence, and may cause us some initial confusion. Notice how this entire phrase can be replaced with the pronoun "it"? That's a sure-fire way to identify it as a noun phrase. For a thorough explanation, see my video on noun clauses. Thanks for watching!

Excellent! You are by far the best English Teacher that I have every listened to. I now know that a subordinate clause is the same as a dependent clause. I'm now enrolled in a College essay class. I seem to say too much. I hoping that understanding sentence structure will assist me in keeping my essays shorter, and more to the point. I'm just going to throw this out to you. I was a draftsman for 17 years and if you ever want to discuss on ways to improve your lettering let me know. I'm just kidding, your penmanship is fine. I wish there was some way I could pay you for putting on such an excellent video. If you would for now, please accept my heartfelt thanks for a job well done as my payment. FR

I've been studying for the TEAS exam (for entry into nursing school) and I kept missing questions that asked you to choose the simple sentence. This video FINALLY helped me to see the difference between complex sentences and simple sentences. Another one of your videos actually helped me to figure out how to distinguish between compound and simple sentences. You have the BEST grammar videos on KZbin. Thank you!

Thanks for opening further discussion on this point, abouchouaiful. All things are best kept simple. The simple definition of a clause is a group of words which work together AND which contains both a subject and a verb. A phrase is any other working group of words that lacks one or both of these two essential ingredients. "Driving fast downtown" contains no subject, and no verb (only a "verbal"-- in this case the paritciple "driving"). It therefore cannot be a clause; it's a noun phrase.

Recognizing a clause with questions they answer has become a difficult thing for me to understand. 1. Now let's take a Noun clause used as subject of the verb for example. "Whoever leaves last should turn off the lights. Now if we separate the independent clause we get "should turn of lights" Now I can't understand that how to think of this independent clause so that a question with "what" comes in mind. (They say that in order to be a Noun Clause, a question with the word "what" has to arise from independent clause) Only question comes in my mind is "Who should turn off the lights" and in that case it should be an adjective clause. Your thoughts ???

If you claim "Driving fast downtown" is an NP, then we expect the adverbial phrase "fast in downtown" to be in the post-head position which functions as an adjunct which is impossible. The adverb "fast" modifies the tenseless verb "Driving"; "fast" is an adjunct of manner, and only adjuncts function within a clause. Just you have to know that there is a clear difference between a phrase and a clause.

Touilaat, to clarify and settle the matter I would simply refer you to the definition of a clause. The following excerpt is a direct quote from the Miriam-Webster English dictionary. KZbin prevents the posting of links in comments (or I'd post), but it is easily found. Clause /ˈklɑ:z/ noun plural claus·es [count] 1 grammar : a part of a sentence that has its own subject and verb ▪ The sentence “When it rained they went inside” consists of two clauses: “when it rained” and “they went inside.”
