WOW Never thought there would come a day where I would get to see and shoot both Big Horn Armory 460 and 500 Magnum Spike Driver.

Another great video and terrific comparison! Love those Lever Actions, I'm especially partial to the 500 magnum. Having the S&W 500 PC revolver, I've always wanted to get The Big Horn armory rifle, a bit to steep in price ($4,000) though. Keep the big bore videos coming "Mr. Revolver Guy" 👍

Just tell them, "Chesty made me do it" who-rah! i have one in .500 S&W with an 18 in. barrel. I needed a reliable brush gun. The .45-70 will penetrate deeper, but I did not want to blow a hole all the way through elk or a deer. They brush up really well around here, and I have never had one offer me a shot over 90 yards. I was used to hunting in nigh desert, around the hills and mountains, where the game would never offer a shot under 200 yards. I had the wrong firearm for the job, so it was a le-git-amate reason to get a new rifle. I love my new brush gun

Just stumbled across your video and really enjoyed it. I have a S&W 460V (5" barrel) and with just shy of book max loads of H110 pushing the same 240gr XTP Mag I'm getting 1700fps with my chrony about 15' from the muzzle. Extraction is just shy of sticky. These large capacity S&W super mags really shine with H110/W296 but don't take well to downloading with those powders. I'm seriously considering making the $600 deposit to get a BHA 90 Trapper build started. This video may have pushed me over the edge.

Higher velocity at lower pressure can be attributed to pressure curve. The pressure builds slower and stays at that level for longer. Think of it like you car going 0-50 in 1 second vs going 0-60 in 2 seconds. One is faster, but the other one reached nearly the same speed much faster. 500 s&w specifically is designed for an 8" barrel. Cfe blk is an excellent powder, but it was made for a lighter bullet in a 50% longer barrel. It is made for 300 blackout which operates on a 10-12" barrel.

Considering the 454 Casull BHA. We're they lighter 460's very manageable? You'd think a handgun cartridge would be alot more comfortable out of a rifle..

Would You Rather: Have either of these levers in 460 or 500 or a handgun chambered in 45-70? (With the assumption that you can't have the matching handgun or rifle.)
@cristianespinal99173 жыл бұрын
If I can have other firearms but just can't have a matching handgun, I'd go w the lever-action in .460 and my sidearm would be a Ruger Redhawk or Blackhawk in .45 Colt. I've handled and shot the short barrel .460 XVR. It was cool, but I have no interest in a handgun in .500 anything, .475, .460, or .454. Full-house .44 Magnum and hot .45 Colt are as big as I'd want to go in a revolver. Maybe .480 Ruger, but I haven't tried it. Not worried about grizzlies or moose where I am.

LOL Charlie -- I will have everything posted at dayattherange.com but there was a ammo spillage on the way to the range in the range bag and obviously factory got mixed with the loads.

500 S&W Magnum load may be to light for the powder and it is unstable. not good.. recently had that happen in 45-70. But it is also could be that it is slower enough to screw up on 8"...
@Dayattherange3 жыл бұрын
I think the load does not burn all the way because it is not a light load at least according to the hodgdon site.
@archangel200312 жыл бұрын
CFE BLK is a rifle powder. And for such an expensive rifle, they shure seem clunky when operating the lever!
@Dayattherange2 жыл бұрын
It absolutely is rifle powder but can be used in the big bore Magnums Hodgdon has official load data for it. Cycles much better with the right profile freedom pill the pointy ones are not recommended for a a lever action to began with as you do not want to accidentally set one off in the tube. Though the FTX was designed for this it still is not recommended. The right profile and slick right up.

240 gr at 1900. I can load 45 colt to those velocitys out of a rossi 92
@Dayattherange2 жыл бұрын
Sure you can that doesn't mean it is safe in ANY way. Unless you mean 454 and still then you are pushing it. There is not a SAAMI spec or a reloading manual that would agree with you. I am not saying this to be mean or controversial and I could have just deleted the post. I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you to please be safe and for others out there reloading their own to be safe. If you have to push a 45Colt that hard just jump up to the next caliber. If safety is not a concern for you think about the value of your Rossi lever because after those HOT rounds it will be well USED. If safety is not a concern for you then think about those around you. BE SAFE
@stevedouglas54433 жыл бұрын
I still say, with a revolver, and the scope, I'd rather have VA lever gun.
@Mbartel5007 ай бұрын
Well those loads were .44 magnum level as far as muzzle energy goes. Both cartridges are capable of at least twice the power of your handloads. Not trying to poo poo your efforts on comparing the handguns to the rifles, but if you’re going to shoot the .500 and .460 magnums, at least load them up to factory power levels. These bad boys were not designed to mimic the .44 magnum…just say'n.

CFE powders suck in general. I have 3 pounds of CFE pistol. It suuuuucks in 10mm. CFE 223 sucks in my AR-15 too. Even tried it in bolt action. Horrible accuracy. Don’t waste your money on any CFE variant. Beautiful guns though fellow devil dog!
@lannmurphy25922 жыл бұрын
Negative, I’ve got 3 loads with cfe223 that one ragged hole, load down on powder and up in weight, it’s fast and accurate. You likely skipped over the starting charge. Walk it back down if your pills are heavy enough.
@wirebrush3 жыл бұрын
Recoil Mania? Those are some pretty weak loads. You could get just about the same ballistics with a 44 magnum.
