I'm just sitting here like: "Wait hold on, what, wait a second, I need this book!" And then you just hold up another book that I would love to read :D Your videos are dangerous for my bank account^^ I don't think I have a favourite creepy read yet, but I'm sure I'll find something with these wonderful recommendations! Xx

I agree on the ghost stories in Jeanette Winterson's collection being absolutely fantastic, they were some of my favorites in Christmas Days! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Witch - it seems like one of few histories of witches with a more general scope which is exactly what I'm looking for. The Buried Soul definitely is a book I have to check out!

Love your list. I read Florence and Giles a few years ago and loved it. Reminded me a wee bit of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. I have The Girl Who Couldn't Read by John Harding and Eight Ghosts. I'm going to dive right into it now. Thanks for the recommendations!

Gotta find The Butcher's Hook, Poor Things, and The Book Collector for sure. Jane Eyre has been a favorite since I was a pre-teen, I have to re-read it every other year or so. Oh yes....and Raven Girl sounds so intriguing as well! Love these recommendations, thank you so much!!

I'm learning that my favourite sort of books are ones with elements of magical realism, especially when abstract concepts are personified or made concrete. Going to try 'Grief is the Thing with Feathers', been on my TBR for a while but I'm a bit nervous... Empathy is my superpower, I feel it very intensely, so I don't want to get myself in too much of a state!! Heard such great things about it though...

Great picks! I love how The Butcher's Hook goes sooo dark & that there's a villainous character named Mr Onions. And I'd totally forgotten how odd, poetic & creative Deborah Kay Davies' novel is until you mentioned it. I'm eager try The Book Collector & The Girl Who Couldn't Read. A short graphic novel I love that's perfect for Halloween is "Angela" written by Chrissy Williams and illustrated by Howard Hardiman where the narrator is obsessed with ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and speaks directly to Angela Lansbury via Jessica Fletcher. It's really fun & camp, but also psychological and poetic like a David Lynch film. :)

Hi Jen, thanks for the recommendations! I've only found your channel a couple months ago. I haven't read any of your suggestions, but am intrigued by Lullaby. I don't like scary stories but just adore creepy, spooky, twisty tales. My favorite authors of this type are Daphne de Maurier, Sophie Hannah and Sarah Waters...are you a fan of any of those?
@scrawlyweaver50577 жыл бұрын
Recently read Never Let Me Go. This book is a perfect example of "Don't judge a book by it's cover" The name and the image were so off putting to me but man was I wrong, and of course, after reading it, the title made perfect sense. It was after watching your list of great dystopian reads, that I was like "oooooh, I might be missing out here" Will deffinetly be reading more of his books in the future, for me this is a lesson learned. 😶

wow such a richness of the strange and weird...i'd already chosen a group of short stories by patricia highsmith "mermaids on the golf course" and now i've added "never let me go" from your recommendations and will keep lightman's "ghost" and burnside's "dumb house" in mind.

Jane Eyre is the only one I've read. Actually, I listened to it on CD. I think I might have heard of some others. If you haven't already read them, read Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Lewis Stevenson, Edgar Allan Poe's works, and Ray Bradbury's "Usher II," which can be read as a sequel of sorts to his novel Fahrenheit 451 but is also a tribute to Poe and part of The Martian Chronicles.

You need to read Geek Love by Katherine Dunn! Since you love strange fiction and from what I can tell it is on the same level as Poor Things. It was so interesting and very well written. Highly recommend for this time of the year!

Jen Campbell yeah now that you say that I agree that it wasn’t handled properly and it was very messed up. The writing style was pretty good so I hope she comes out with something else and handles the subject much better then this one. I wonder how she handled it in interviews.
