I've never heard of the 12 Dancing Princesses, but Entwined sounds so good! I love retellings! Splintered also sounds interesting. I like it when the author takes the fairytale and flips it! Wicked (Gregory McGuire) does that too - makes you see characters in a different light. I have heard mixed reactions to Dorothy Must Die, but I enjoyed it. I just did my first booktube video last week. Looking forward to more and more! Thanks for your videos and your perspective.

"Breadcrumbs" by Anne Ursu. This is a retelling of "The snow queen" by Hans Christian Andersen and it's amazing!! It also includes like two references of "The little match girl" and "The red shoes" by the same author but since I haven't read many Andersen's tales I can't tell if those two are the only references in the book. If you're gonna read it then read those three fairy tales first! I personally loved that book so much.

I've read a ton of retellings. It's one of my favorite genres. Some of the best I've read are 'Beauty', 'Imaginary Lands, and 'Spindle's End' by Robin McKinley (Beauty & the Beast, a mix of fairytale short stories including Tam Lin, and Sleeping Beauty); 'Ella Enchanted', 'Fairest', and 'The Princess Test' by Gail Carson Levine (Cinderella, Snow White, and The Princess and the Pea); 'Enchantment' by Orson Scott Card (Sleeping Beauty); 'Beauty Sleep' and 'The Storyteller's Daughter' by Cameron Dokey (Sleeping Beauty and 1001 Arabian Nights).
@laurenschultz91398 жыл бұрын
My all time favorite re-telling is Wicked by Gregory Maguire. It is The Wizard of Oz, but from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West, and it is amazing. He really gives her a voice and a legitimate backstory, which is something you didn't get in TWoO. I'm also currently reading The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury, and so far I'm really loving it! It's a re-telling of Aladdin, and the genie is a girl and she falls in love with Aladdin.

My favorite retelling would have to be Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell that is a retelling of Peter Pan that follows a girl who has to choose between the charming Peter Pan who says all the right things or to the scheming young pirate that has good intentions for her safety. i recommend this book so much and I hope you guys like it too. Thanks for reading. Bye!!!

I often feel like I'm the only one with this opinion but I love The Madman's Daughter trilogy! Each book is a spin on a classic sci-fi/gothic horror novel which is such a cool change of pace from the typical fairytale retellings. The first book is based on The Island of Dr. Moreau, the sequel is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the third one is really obvious to predict when reading it, but I guess it's technically a spoiler so I won't say ;) They're such quick reads though and the romance doesn't completely overshadow the rest of the plot, which I love.

I'm 24, so a lot of the following retellings are older, since I read them my early teens, but they're awesome and all YA or adult books: -"East" by Edith Pattou: it's an incredible retelling of "Beauty and the Beast"; definitely my favorite version of this story. -"Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" and "Mirror Mirror" by Gregory Maguire: These are retellings of "Cinderella" and "Snow White", respectively. In both cases, they're set in historical times and kind of turn the fairy tales on their heads. I'd probably consider both these books to be adult rather than YA. Maguire's most famous work is probably "Wicked", but I liked both of these books a lot better. - "Spindle's End" and "Beauty" by Robin McKinley: Robin McKinley is a fantastic fantasy writer and her retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" is one of my favorites! "Beauty" is a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast".

Any of Alex Flinn's re-tellings. They're all stand-alone novels but take place in the same universe. For instance there's a witch who shows up in her BatB, Cinderella, and Snow White re-tellings. Oh also check out Ella Enchanted, a re-telling of Cinderella, and Fairest, a re-telling of Snow White, both by Gail Carson Levine. Like Alex Flinn's re-tellings, Gail Carson Levine's books are stand-alone novels that take place in the same universe.

You should read Gregory McGuire's books who was the inspiration for Wicked the musical also Fairest of them all by Carolyn Turgeon. That's really good; the basic premise is that Rapunzel is the evil queen in Snow White perfectly blending the 2 fairytales. Strands of bronze and gold is actually based on the blue beard fairytale which isn't well known tale and is really good. Books by Jenni James and Lani Lenore are great and you can find them on the Kindle app.

I enjoyed "Wicked" which is a retelling of The Wizard of OZ. I also loved reading "The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennett" and "The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennett" which are books based on the web series "The Lizzie Bennett Diaries" which is a re telling of "Pride and Prejudice" I also enjoyed "The Wrath and the Dawn" I am going to be reading the next book. Question. I am not sure but what about novels that are not really re telling? Meaning there is this series called "Unbound" where this girl time travels inside a story. The first book is "A Breath of Eyre" where this young girl is reading Jane Eyre for English class and one night she gets struck by lighting and transported into the novel Jane Eyre. Another book (a stand alone) "Little Women and Me" where this girl is transported into the story "Little Women". Do they count as re tellings or are they different?
