Reconstruction of the Garrison Church in Potsdam 2022

The Garrison Church in Potsdam has recently come under criticism.
Despite everything, the reconstruction will continue, especially since completion is in sight. The tower of the church has already reached a considerable height and shows what a landmark this church is for Potsdam.
The Berlin television broadcaster made its way to Potsdam to document the construction progress.

Sehr gut. Aber das ungepflegte Umfeld hätte den Preußischen Adel sich nicht gefallen. Die Grünanlagen gehören auch derbe aufgehübscht!

Vor allem diese " sozialistische " Baukästen die überall als " Kultur- Begegnungs- Stätten noch rumstehen. Sollen diese Freaks sich besser auf der Wiese begegnen. Die Bauklötze müssen verschwinden. Gesprengt werden. Ausradiert werden wie einst die Kirche selbst ausradiert wurde- ohne Grund. Ein Symbolakt.

The original structure had a rather dark and unfortunate history. What is the main reason for rebuilding it? Is it simply to restore the prewar baroque integrity of Potsdam? Normally, when a building disappears, something new takes its place. Not, it seems, in Germany, where a lot of the old is new again. Certainly, this is being criticised outside the country where it is felt that Germany is busy whitewashing its sins….is this the case? Can someone clarify? It certainly is interesting to these these historical buildings making a comeback, even if they are a ‘pastiche’ of the original….
