It's a race against time to finish our annual wheat harvest before the rain comes!
Our neighbour Joaquim and his amazing Ford tractors sweep up the fields and turn the remaining wheat stalks into hay bales. He urgently needs these bales to feed his sheep in the hot, dry summer months ahead. We finally get to see his "Hay Pooper" in action again, and this year is we break records for the amount of hay bales harvested on our fields! We also meet up with our other neighbour Antonio who gives us an insight into the challenges the local farmers are facing with the ongoing drought conditions. We hear about how he farms meat sheep here in the Beira Baixa region of Central Portugal.
Hope that you enjoy this episode, let us know what you think in the comments :)
We are Ken & Gina. In 2019 we sold our home and drove to Portugal in our motorhome Bob. We bought a beautiful farm in the Castelo Branco district of Central Portugal. I never tire of observing Joachim working the fields and you explaining all and things you discover in the cropped grasses. It was really good to sea and also hear from Antonio, too. Again, getting his perspective and how he's adapting his farming to weather and feed conditions adds depth to your Farm Life vlogs.

I’ve really enjoyed this series of hay making. My dad was contract haymaker here in Australia during the 1960s/70s. This has given me such a trip down memory lane. Yes he had a baler that made square bales, but the cutting, drying and raking are so familiar to me.. even after all these years. Thanks for sharing.. love your place in Portugal.. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Joaquim looks like a great person and you will learn portuguese with someone like him. Was watching and wondering… how old is Joaquim? When did he start farming? What would he do with new machinery and his knowledge? Has he ever had a weekend, a holiday away? Will he ever be able to enjoy a dolce fare niente? You have to interview him and thank him for his genuine smile. Nice work Ken 😊

It's great to get to know farmers in another country, we are all fans of Joaquim, and good to hear also from Antonio, but very sad to hear he has to sell some of his flock cos of feed costs, that must be so hard for him. Happy to hear the farm is "improving." Don't want to be a party pooper, but, just be prepared, just in case. Typically farming is an life that has good years, and bad years. Ups and downs are the norm. Ride the wave, and enjoy what you can.

Nice video, very relaxing. The Hay Rake on the tractor is called a Acrobat in the UK (well that’s what we called them). Not many people use them now, and they are rarely seen in action. We used one back in the 70s and they are very robust and can handle really rough ground without breaking. They are more common in the USA, but they are much bigger machines and they can work at quite high speeds.

Hey guys, Bob the campervan is not road legal in Portugal so we cant drive him off the farm. It costs a lot of money to import cars here and he needs a lot of work so im not sure we will do it. We have a mechanic friend who will give him a service and we plan to clean him up a bit so Gina can use him as an office or art studio when we have guests over using our office room. We usually move him to the bottom field in the winter and back up to the main farm house area in the summer.

It would be a win-lose unfortunately. The problem is I would need to spend around 10,000+ euros to buy a tractor capable of doing these tasks, and another couple of thousand to buy the tractors tools. There's maintenance and fuel costs on top of this, not to mention if I am operating the tractor there is no one to film these videos for me. I would also have to sell the hay bales to make up for all of the spent to buy and run the tractor. Joaquim wouldn't have access to free grass to feed his sheep, and I wouldn't have any of these types of videos to share with KZbin. We are both happy with our current arrangement and its working really well :)
