I have a plan for beating the scorching Summer heat. April is the month of rain and we have had little to none! This means that it will be a very difficult summer for the farmers here. Last year was extreme drought and even though we were using only one of our wells we still had enough to last the full season. In this episode I get our second well up and running so we can irrigate our garden and some crops. We also check in with our awesome neighbor and farmer Joaquim who gives us a little insight into the work he is doing on the fields to prepare them for Summer.
Hope that you enjoy this episode, let us know what you think in the comments :)

We are Ken & Gina. In 2019 we weren't happy with the way things were going for us, so before Brexit, we sold our home and most of our our belongings, and drove to Portugal in our motorhome Bob.
We bought an old sheep and olive farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal, where we live the good life with our beautiful animals. Back in 2019, we could not find any videos on living in Portugal, so we started this channel, documenting our move from the city life to the farm life, and buying a farm.

Hello Ken and Gina. Really enjoy your videos. We moved to the Leiria district December 2022 and purchased a small piece of land with a vineyard which we are too old to take care off. We do the same as you. There is a person who has been taking care of it for many years and we assured him he can continue to care and harvest the vineyard. It sure is a win-win scenario for both of us. He can not afford the extra land and we can not afford to have it taken care of. We do hear the same thing as you. That we should charge the farmer for using our land and profiting from it. We on the other hand think of it as a big saving for us that we don’t have to pay anyone to take care of the land. Getting along with neighbours and helping each other should be the norm. Looking forward to your next video.

Your farm is looking great! We can truly see your joy and stress free life that you benefit from the farm. The scenery you capture is marvellous, it looks like a painting. Thanks for the update! 🌷Sam

Good afternoon Ken, please allow me 2 corrections to your Portuguese: "ovelhas" are feminine so you should say "quantAs ovelhas" - where is if you talking about "cabritos" you say "quantOs cabritos" (masculine). The other one is "nine" which in Portuguese in "nove" and not novO which means "new" in English. Keep up with the good work and enjoy PT. and the wonderful weather... Hugs José

I had thought that when Joaquim put up the barb wire fence it might be a contention due to a hazard for your awesome dogs. It appears all worked out good. I think it’s just awesome that you both have a great relationship. Joaquim obviously to me is a good man. He really likes you and the friendship is real and symbiotic as you stated. I’m Portuguese originally close to Aveiro close to the ocean. Your life seems so awesome in a quiet , simple and humble countryside. You can’t put monetary value in that. I applaud you. Its very unlikely but if something like that were to happen we could get a drilled borehole that goes deep into the ground through rock into an aquifer. Alternatively we get lots of rain in rain in the winter/spring. We have a 6000 litre tank next to the house fed from the guttering. That tank was filled in only a day when it rained in the winter. So we could get massive tanks sunk into he ground and use our roofs guttering to collect rainwater to store and use in summer.

Hi Ken & Gina We watch your videos every week, my husband dream is to go live off grid in Portugal. Got a question about the electric bikes you have. I want to buy one to get around in Maderia which has a lot of steep hills. Which bike would you recommend Eleglide or the Engwe? Your recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 😊
@OKportugal
@OKportugal Жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, do you have any bicycle shops where you live? I think your best bet is to try a few different types of ebike to get an idea of the riding position and size before buying something online. The eleglide is very good value for money but it is using very cheap components. Its very functional and capable but you can see and feel the quality difference when put next to a quality ebike from a big brand like Trek, KTM, Giant etc. The Engwe M20 is a very fun bike to cruise on but its more like a moped rather than a bike. They do have other ebike models and some folding ones too, but they might not be legal to ride in Madeira as some have very powerful motors and top speeds above 25kph. Definitely go to a bike store, test drive some models and then looks around online for the best price :)

can you set aside an area for the bees? Some farms are leaving margins at the field edge only 2ft wide and they let the wildflowers dandelions and grass grow uninterrupted. It feeds the bees and hardly effects yields.

The main filed areas will be tilled to plant corn, but we have horizontal borders with different fruit and olive trees which get left for the bees, as well as our olive grove areas. I do cut the grass short but some hardy species that can handle the heat pop up over late spring and summer and will give shelter and food to the insect life :)

@@OKportugal The bees need all the help they can get especially early season. Having wildflowers is excellent if they are left wild. The dividend is the best-tasting hones all year round, and a sustainable environment. Because you have fire regs it has to be thought through. Good luck. You guys get it and I feel sure it's a real achievable goal as you progress.

@@tedwhanstall6156 Thanks Ted, yes we have to have everything cut and cleared before summer but the edges are always left as the cutter cant really get to them. Sadly the summer sun just scorches them out and they die off during summer. Our house well keeps a nice green area full of flowers and grasses though and once the corn flowers blossom the bees love those! :)

Hi Sara, thank you :) Yes the geese eat loads of grass. For now they are in our fenced off veggie patch and eating everything green! Fortunately we have raised beds or all our veggies will be gone. Once the geese are fully feathered and able to handle themselves we will let them free range around the farm. Then our fenced off green grass area will get a bit of a rest and only be used for special goose treats :)

I think you have a great relationship with Joaquim. Very beneficial to you both. Anyway, I did see in the news that Spain and Portugal are in for some serious heat again. It's certainly worrisome. It seems that 🇨🇦 will be in for it as well. Where I am in Nova Scotia, we have drilled wells, and water is plentiful. April has been dry here as well. The 1st week of May will bring some rain. I wonder if covering the well will prevent more loss through evaporation, or will it diminish the quality of the water. Climate change is getting scary. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦

In the 4 years that we have been on the farm, last year was the worst drought. I think they classified it as extreme drought. Even so both our wells and dam did not drop too much and over the winter we had record water levels as we had a very rainy December. I have full faith that our wells will be plenty for us to use for many more years but it is always a worry. We could start to harvest rainwater is huge tanks for use in the summers. Maybe get some massive tanks buried in the ground feeding off the roof guttering.

Just watched an article about El Niño apparently this year is possibly going to result in an even more severe drought with occasional heavy storms .. if you can dig some more ponds to capture the water in the heavy storms, you could be okay. Also, it might be worth planting agroforestry style trees in between your fields as they will reduce the temperature and the trees will send their roots and symbiotic mycorrhizal relationships down many metres to hunt for water, which will condense at night just an idea

Nice one Ken. The cylinder in your pumphouse, is called an accumulator and it's function is to maintain the water in the system at a constant pressure irrespective of high or low demand. It consists of an internal air filled rubber bag which is acting against the stored water and keeping it under pressure. As the water gets used, the said pressure in the accumulator, starts to reduce until, at a preset level, the pump will kick in and start refilling the cylinder hence maintaining a constant level and pressure. It's a self-governing, feedback loop system which requires little maintenance, but, like all systems, can be affected by component failure.

Hi Ken only been watching last 9 months or so since I became disabled and unable to work. You’re living my dream out there. Love your relationship with Jochim. I think you both got a good deal. Have you thought about filters for the water to clean it up? Also I was wondering what happened to the wool, having not watched the early years I don’t know if you covered it. Reason being on a TV show called Countryfile recently they were showing vineyards in Wales, nearby sheep country. The farmer with the sheep was only getting 16 pence per sheep but it cost £1 to shear them. So he grew veggies and used the wool as a mulch with great results, so he sold the wool to the vineyard with amazing results and saved spraying weed killer with the chance of killing the vines. Anyway thought I would let you know. I would love a free bike Engwe lol.

Hi Hoog, I am sorry to hear that you are suffering with disability and I wish you all the best and good strength! I used to keep lots of fishtanks and have used loads of different filtration methods. Unless we use reverse osmosis it cant guarantee that we wont suffer from pesticides or heavy metals. Being in the farmlands thats always a worry even if we dont use any on our farm. Reverse osmosis or distilled water also is lacking in minerals and salts and can actually cause serious health problems if you drink it long term as it leeches them from your body. At some stage i will look into some filters but i twill make sure that I get the water tested well just to be sure! I am not sure what he does with the wool, but shearing season is coming up soon so I will be sure to ask then.

Thanks for your best wishes. You could probably build your own filter to clean up the water going into the house for general use but for drinking water there are some gadgets for camping to clean water, also sure I have seen something made for places like Africa to do it. Good health and stay safe.

What are your thought on regenerative ag. Tilling soil is not good for the soil. Keeping the soil covered is key. Carbon holds onto water but cultivation destroys that

Ken, you think the drought has anything to do with all the Chemtrails I see recently in all central Portugal video's. Really heavy spraying lately !!!
