Record Irwin No 4 Hand Plane

A number four is a smoothing plane, not a jackplane , it's too short to straighten a long length of wood as will ride the high spots a jackplane is a number 5, or 5 1/2 , or a Junior 5 1/4 called a jackplane because its the smallest of the bench planes and can be used as a smoothing and Jointer plane and small enough to carry on site so jack of all trades giving it the name Jackplane.

I'm a newbie woodworker & bowyer. I don't have a plane yet, but I've just been paid today and I'm going out to buy my first plane today. This is the one I was looking at, so I wanted to see reviews. It looks good, so I'm gonna get one and I'm also getting a mitre saw today and some other gubbinz. (Like carpenters pencils and a square) When I first started buying tools about 7 weeks ago I didn't realise how many I'd actually need just to make my first bits of furniture and my first crossbow. 😅

Enjoy your woodworking journey! My first tools were second hand , Do Not buy any tools if you can do the job with what you have!!! Invest your money wisely you don’t want your hard earned cash gathering dust on a shelf .if you find yourself in z hardware shop with cash burning a hole in your pocket buy a good clamp you can never have too many clamps!!! I bought one a month ago for 10€ On the flea market but with wooden handles and a spring. It looked awfull but after some cleaning it looks like brand new. Didn’t know how to fine-tune it, so his was exactly the video I was looking for. Tnx!

Everybody talks about having the chip breaker so close to the tip of the blade. I don't know why I cannot get it closer than a quarter inch

Thank you David, very helpful - a guide for 'the rest of us'. I know there are many, many videos on KZbin about tool sharpening. I think you would be able to make a useful addition if you could cover the practical basics. i.e. How to get a chisel or plane blade 'good enough' to use.

TNX, just bought it, very good price, the iron is made of a decent steel, but it needed a lot of preparation to set up: sole, iron and chip breaker needed a lot of grinding and sharpening to make it work properly. the handles are small for big hands, the sides aren't square with the sole, so you cant use it with a shooting board. bottom line, for this price you get more than you paid for.

I was thinking the same thing ! A no4 is a smoother, you cant use a 4 for everything its to small to properly flatten things out, and cant take heavy shavings well, im a level 1 carpentry/joinery student and i know this (i use no 4s and 5s in almost all my work) i dont see how supposedly experienced guys can get stuff like this wrong...

Hi yes I flattened the sole and sharpened the blade I have been using these planes in my woodwork school for about 5 years they are doing well except the blade adjustment yolk broke on one of them and I haven’t been able to find a replacement part! Best wishes David

You know, these don't seem too bad. How flat and square was it new? I can find #4 Baileys all day that just need a clean up to work well but if someone needed a new plane on a budget this seems pretty similar to the old models, save for the plastic handles.

Hey Eggypickle they are pretty square but the sole needs some flattening I guess about half an hours work on sand paper by hand but even without the work for most diy tasks,trimming doors and such it works great Happy Woodworking David

Screwfix say that this has a 20 degree angle, but I can't find any honing guides for a 20 degree angle - just 25 and 30 degrees. What do you recommend David?

Hi Alex I don’t know what tool you’re talking about the plane in the video needs sharpening at 25 degrees but maybe you could cut a piece of hardwood at 20degrees and make a jig Best Wishes David

@@RusticDavid I'm talking about the tool in your video. Screwfix is a hardware store in the UK. Their spec page says 20 degrees, but I wonder if it's a typo as nobody sells a honing guide for that angle.

I have bought this plane and my blade sticks out under the sole much to far, around 2mm, even when the adjustment is backed fully out. I can’t work out for the life of me what I’m doing wrong. I have 3 other planes and don’t have this problem with any of them.

Hi David. Thanks for the video. I have access to buying this in my country. How would you rate this vs a Stanley no 4 (£50 on Amazon one). And overall is this a good enough plane to last a few years or more? Also is the bottom flat or does it need work?

Hi it’s a good plane basically the same as the stanley except for the cap iron which uses a knurled bolt which is very comfortable to use , the finish out of the factory varies I have 5 of them in my school they all needed a little work before use flattening the sole sharpening the blade etc but overall worth the effort for the price Happy Woodworking David

This is a great video David! It should help many people who are trying to get into woodworking without breaking the bank. I am really amazed from the performance of these hand planes which apparently all are made in India.
