Record Power DML305 - Woodturning lathe review with Phil.
This is a review of this Record Power DML305 woodturning lathe. A Fantastic lathe for your money. If you want a small lathe this is the one to buy. It also has an indexing facility on as standard. Comes with 4 prong drive, live centre and a faceplate. A good price as well.

I bought this lathe recently and I am very happy. However, the engine raises the temperature considerably under normal operating conditions. It can be worrying ?

I have run this lathe for courses all day and 15 years on it still going strong. If I had to calculate I would say 500 day's running for 6 hour's a day.

Thanks 👍. Now considering one of these over Axminster and Holzman Is the distance between points suitable for chair leg turning?

Hi wondering if 6pm can help sir I’m looking into wood turning would the DML320 be a good one to start with or the 305. I’m asking as I’m disabled and had 2 strokes and use a wheelchair and trying to find something easy to use sort of idiot proof or as it’s called in my house steve proof any help or advice would be very appreciated many thanks steve

Hello Steve. The main difference is the DML320 is variable speed so less belt changing, second you can start the lathe at a slow speed and increases the speed work you way up to a suitable speed for the size of work. For the extra £270 it will make life easer when you come to use abrasives you can just turn the speed down with the rotating dial. If you place a uneven piece of timber on the lathe you can find the correct speed that is safe and once in balance you can slowly increases the speed, no belt change. Hope this helps. I will be making more video and some live steams shortly. Phil

Have you turned any large bowls on this lathe

I have turned up to 11" or 280mm x 3" or 75mm. This was not a problem if you use a low speed setting which is needed anyway for the peripheral speed for this size bowl. Would I turn large bowls of this size regularly, no is the answer. You would require a larger motor on a lathe. Hope this helps.

For that type of items, no problems at all. I run courses and it never let me down after a few 100's items being turned on it.

Thank you for this overview. I have been researching quite a while and came upon this which ticks a lot of boxes. I was wondering though - looking at your other videos using this model - what accessory you have fitted to replace the face plate that comes as standard ie the chuck that grips the wood piece? I have looked online on the manufacturers website but nothing listed that I can see. I would think further down the line I would like to do similar. As seen here kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXm2m2ycmtCjbq8

Thank you for the comment. The additional equipment would be a chuck. I use the record SC4 a good chuck for the price. This opens up the opportunity to hold the work peice at end only, enabling you to make items like, egg cup, bowls and many other items.

Ah okay! The Record SC4 chuck - I shall look further into that. I do hope to secure a Record Power DML305 lathe before the end of the year. Im sure it would not be long before I would wish this upgrade and so useful to know what I am looking for - thank you kindly.
