☆☆SAFETY NOTICE☆☆ Re. the wire wheel.... ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS !!! ...wear eye protection which FULLY covers your eyes & preferably your whole face... the wire strands WILL & DO break off during use, as a retired professional machinist I can GUARANTEE this will happen... FYI the switch on my Record failed and when i asked them about a warranty fix they told me that running a wire wheel had voided my guarantee! To be fair they did send me a free switch. Just fitted a CBN wheel from Toolpost and a coarse Ruby and it has honestly transformed the grinder. CBN is so much better. Nice video mate.

Hi Andy, great video, love the foot tapping music. I have my bench grinder fitted on a plinth with a CBN wheel and a Tormek bench grinder kit. Not the cheapest setup but very handy for sharpening turning tools and woodworking chisels. Also, not to endorse removing safety features but the guards are there to safeguard against standard composite stone wheels going in all directions if they shatter, not something you will ever get with a CBN wheel and you may find them restrictive.

Your video is very informative about this grinder, so much so that I've ordered it from Yandles in Martock this evening. I can see from all aspects of what you show about this machine that it is what I'm after. So thanks for putting this up on KZbin, I've subscribed to your channel and wishing you all the best! If you are not going to use it daily,you could do what I did with my new Dremel drill stand.I bolted it to a piece of ply. Placed it where I wanted it, then drilled three holes - two at the front, one at the back. Put three threaded inserts in the the bench, so I can bring it over and secure it with knobs.You can use the ones you scored from the old guide

I bought a CBN wheel after stumpy nuns recommended one for idiot proof chisel sharpening, I’ve never looked back, best purchase I’ve made.
@jimbo26296 жыл бұрын
I think when buying a grinder it’s worth turning the wheels in the shop to see if they wobble. A lot do. It also needs to be vibration free. I have two. The cheapo is smooth and quiet. The more expensive is worse! I think cbn wheels are much safer, but I wonder about spending about £100, and £50 on a decent tool rest. I have a Worksharp that cost about £200, so I don’t use a grinder very often. I imagine the Worksharp gives a much better edge than any grinder. It takes me more time to take the chisel to it than it does to sharpen the edge. My grinder has a buffing wheel for a final polish. I don’t use wet stones and jigs. Interesting video as always.

Muppets, Andy. There's muppets everywhere. Nice takedown and rebuild of the grinder and the CBN upgrade looks like a really worthwhile job. As part of our build out at the Shed I'm putting all our grinders on a trolley (basic box with drawers on a machine base from Rutlands) so the guys can pull it out when needed, use whichever machine then (in theory) put it back, saving space and clutter. Might be a thought for your space there?

Only Me when i was looking for new machines I looked at the white and the only difference was they were a bit cheaper but had smaller batteries, they seemed to be exactly the same machines.
@sandervandijk23736 жыл бұрын
Black and white are special editions. Some brands have the Toyota, Lexus strategy like Dewalt and Black and Decker or Mafell and Metabo. Makita does not have that strategy, They have professional and DIY tools with the same brandname.

I read on the Contractors Forum that ALL the powertool manufacturers supply lower quality product through the "big box" stores, (hence the price difference) as opposed to dedicated tool providers or direct. Things like bearings have been compromised on... is this true ? I can't say for sure... 🙁

Hi Andy great channel Just 1 question on the grinder can you tell me what size the shaft is as I'm after a grinder that can handle a C B N wheel Many thanks
@cjhification6 жыл бұрын
The flange/spacer/washer is needed with the stone wheels to spread the force of the nut. As the CBN wheel is metal then you don't need it or the silver wheel gaurde cases as they are needed in case the wheel explodes which you shouldn't need with a mostly metal wheel.
@GosforthHandyman6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I though. Wasn't sure if the flange also acts like a big spring washer?
@cjhification6 жыл бұрын
@@GosforthHandyman I pretty sure that the force required to get a bit of metal about 3-4 mm thick, with a convex surface, to act as a spring would cause damage to the wheel before it was acting like a spring. Obviously only do what you're happy with as the consequences are all on you, but that is my analysis.
@michaelshore23006 жыл бұрын
Convex grind. I have never tried this myself , many years ago, 1950s an old,. then'. cabinet maker worked for my father. He had a very old wet wheel grinder and he had a small diameter rod fixed to the tool rest. To sharpen a chisel he started with the chisel on the rest and the heel on the wheel, he then slowly raised the handle of the chisel until the cutting tip was on the wheel . At 10 I thought this was the way it was always done. Now watching your video I realize this must have given the chisel a convex shape. Also from the internet I see that in america there are 300 and 600 grit CBN wheels, have you seen any available in the UK? I have only seen 180?

Horses for courses Gavin. They obviously work well, but they're SLOWWWW and so damned expensive (and all their own jigs and add-ons are stupidly overpriced). If your main need is doing primary grinds on conventional plane irons and chisels they're very hard to justify, and even some owners acknowledge that they don't actually represent good value for money compared to some options. My view is that life's too short to use a Tormek anyway! And there's a long list of other things for the workshop I'd prefer to spend the 500 quid on. A CBN wheel, even a very expensive one, fitted to a modestly priced grinder will cost you far less (half as much as a Tormek, possibly under) and give you perfect results, with almost zero chance of blueing an edge, no water in the shop and no worries about it freezing in the winter. But perhaps the best selling point is they work about 50 times faster!
@peterfitzpatrick70326 жыл бұрын
The large spacer "FLANGE" is that diameter to grip the stone wheel away from the stone bore so as not to weaken it, one usually has to "dress" the stone to true it up after installation anyways so they simply supply a shitty cheap pressed inner & outer flange... Pro tip... BEFORE fitting a stone (technically a "WHEEL" ) you should tap it to see if you can hear it ring (kinda like a bell), if it sounds flat with no ringing, its probably cracked & should NEVER be used as it may explode during use... this is a handy tip if you see a secondhand wheel for sale at a boot sale... 👍😎☘

Hi Mate good vid as always. Why not put your grinder on a small sliding platform. Use a couple of drawer sliders on their sides and mount a platform on top which you can secure the grinder wheel too. You can the pull it forward when you need it and slide it back when you don’t. Not sure how you’d lock it to stop it sliding back though. Anyway dude, keep up the good work. Once you start to modify, i.e. placing spaces from its original design specification, you will nullify the warranty and be breaching PUWER 98 Regs. Also, don't wear jewellery i.e. wedding ring whilst operating the equipment. Lots of unsafe comments spoken.

Great video Andy, I’d be a little careful giving what could be considered instruction on things like this. Abrasive wheels come under PUWER, training to use/service them in the work place is a legal requirement and modifications such as this would be a big no no anywhere I’ve work. It’s quite easy to get yourself into trouble with things like this. Keep up the good work.
