You summed it up best at the end there - pop culture vs Golden Age of Hollywood. As a comic book collector, there's absolutely nothing pop culture about pre code horror, but it is its own niche market

The thing that bothered me most about the movie was the slippers were silver in the book, which was an important part of the symbolism Frank Baum was trying to portray. However, the makers of the movie wouldn't have understood that, and most likely made them ruby so they could take better advantage of the technicolor process.

Thanks for the video Shawn. Very good explanation of the difference between the “golden age/historical” property and “pop culture”. Pretty sure “Pop Culture” was a term thrown around in 1940s when people were hoarding “collectibles”😜

I can see historic value in these slippers. On the other hand, a banana duct taped to a wall is the most ridiculous sale I have ever seen, by far.
@americanbadass8828 күн бұрын
You will never convince me the banana duct taped to the wall didn't scream money laundering. as for the slippers though. Theres only 4 pairs and they NEVER come up for sale. and there what almost 100 years old.
@AccessAccess28 күн бұрын
The other thing is that if the slippers are in that good condition despite their age, they should survive a very long time. A lot of things like comic books, action figures that came out of the 70's or 80's, etc., have not proven that they can last even a generation or two, if that, without degrading in quality.

The actors suffered from the making of that movie.16 year old Judy Garland was forced to take uppers and downers, causing extreme stress,Buddy Ebsen suffered from toxic aluminum dust, and had to be replaced by Jack Haley, Margaret Hamilton was burned,Ray Bolger ended up with scars from the prosthetic mask,and they all inhaled asbestos from the fake snow

wizard of oz is deeply ingrained into our culture, its referenced all the times directly and indirectly. and wicked is kinda a bit of a thing now i heard. its hard to foresee any time in which things aren't massively hoarded anymore, there's so many people aware that things like that can have value now, even if their knowledge isn't very... nuanced. i'm on a facebook group where people learn about first editions then run around trying to find any first edition thinking it'll be valuable. no, i'm sorry, the first print run on that 90s stephen king book was over a million copies, you could build a town out of the first print run, it's not really worth any significant premium over a nice reading copy.
