@@poopfartpoop748 back in the early 2000s, I would've killed for the ability to record on the spot, track multiple instruments, multiple vocals, be able to edit and eq, and be able to upload it online for millions of people to hear, without really spending any extra money. It's amazing.. But now a days, bands will record a decent recording, then try to be cute and put it on a f*cking cassette tape and sell it.. Why would you take the ability to share your music with millions of people, and shit on it by putting your music on a medium that not too many people have the ability to play at their disposal. It seems counterproductive, but what the hell do I know? Haha

Hey John! I know I’m slightly late but I was closely admiring your songwriting and I found that your syllables were inconsistent. When songwriting, what I’ve found is you want to try and stick to the same amount on each line, say you had 12 syllables on one line, you’d want either 11, 12 or 13 syllables in the next one, and the next, and the next, it only really changes when you transition to a bridge or chorus, but this video was incredibly useful. Thanks so much!

Pete is it better to use the built in microphone for vocal recording or use the lightning headphones microphone ? or is it just a matter of opinion
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend. Yes, opinions vary in this and it can depend what type of vocals you are recording and which iPhone/iPad you are using. The mics on the new iPhone XS for instance are actually crazy good so I’ve used this over a headset mic recently, but earlier iPhones and iPads, especially if they’re old and have some crud built up in the little mic holes, can sound pretty bad.

Pete Johns Pete you should make a video explaining Phantom power. Unless you could explain it to me here because i did some research but i'm still kind of confused
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hey there my friend. I do have a video all about microphones where I talk a little about phantom power. Take a look here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/laHCoGOfaLmbhsk In short, there are generally two types of microphones - dynamic and condenser. Dynamic mics are like what you see folks use when they are singing on stage. These don’t require and additional power to work, meaning you can plug them in to any mixer, PA, amp or interface. Condenser microphones need 48 volts of power to run, which is often referred to as “phantom power”. Most audio interfaces these days support this and have a button or a switch to turn this on if it are using a mic which requires power. Hope this helps!

You can try in a really small room and surround yourself with blankets or clothes. A walk in closet is a good choice. Also try laying your iPad on a pillow when you record so you don’t get any harsh vibrations. It can be tricky to remove all background noise, especially just using the onboard mic.

I purchased a Focusrite Scarlett solo which is decent to use but I also purchased an IRig 2 for convenience. I’ve been a recording artist for years but this my first venture into ‘self recording’ so I’m learning as I go. I’m slowly getting there though with the help of your vids ;)

Nice one! Great to hear. I have a Scarlett 2i2 and love the quality of the preamps in that one. I have a cheap knock-off iRig for the same reason - convenience! I see a few videos on your channel which I'll have to check out. If there's any other links to your music you'd like to point me to, go for it.

@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Unfortunately once you plug a headset in, iOS uses this microphone and there is currently no way to change this. You would need to use headphones which do not have an included microphone.

@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Not sure it would be possible? The adapter for USB-C to 3.5mm uses a TRRS jack. I would recommend an audio interface. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJKUXp2Gq8-cg9U

@@PeteJohnsMusic You're the man, thank you for the answer despite the fact I called you Paul! My apologies :) So conclusion is, I'm gonna need interface and mic to record multiplied guitar tracks? Is that correct ? Or record to the metronome outside of ipad wich i already tried but its just a temporary solution.

@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Alas, there is not. You need to use headphones which don’t have an included mic otherwise it will use the headset mic.
@Craigo-xg5mc5 жыл бұрын
Pete Johns Actually all you need is a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone extension cable. NOT the 4 pole plug version. The iPad will see that there in no mic input and default to it’s internal mic. Works well.

Another great video Pete. Thanks. I have a question that you will know the answer to. Maybe you covered it in another video? Is there a way to insert new (added) extra) bars in the MIDDLE of a garageband timeline, so that everything on all the recorded tracks after the insertion move to the right in synchrony? I know how to add new bars to the end, but that would be a tedious task to move all the tracks manually whilst keeping all the fragments in time. Thanks again. Cheers, Brian
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're in luck Brian. I'll try to find a link to a video where I show this, but will try to explain it here. Add a new section to the end as you normally would, then hit edit and you'll see the delete icons on the left but you'll also see the three line icons on the right. Tap and hold on the three lines icon of the section you just created and drag it up to where you want it in the project. Voila!
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
I show a similar technique in this video, but to move to the start of the project. Same principle to move and create a new section in the middle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2K2ap96rZdlnrM
@infarction88406 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete. Nice idea. But my current track is all recorded as one "automatic" section. There is no gap between sections to shift the new section into. Is this a "too bad"moment, or do you have another trick up your sleeve? Thanks mate.
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
Ooh..... yeah, so that makes things a little more challenging. The only way around this is to add the number of bars at the end, split all your tracks at the same point and then drag them to the right, creating the space you need in the middle. A feature I would l or would be the ability to overlay sections on an existing track without sections but sadly this doesn’t exist. Sorry I can’t help more!
@infarction88406 жыл бұрын
But that was a great help Pete! Now I know, if you don't know a smooth way, then the crunchy manual way is the only way. Thanks as ever for all your sage advice and teachings. You are like an antipodean guru on Garageband.
@christophermartin35514 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your reply. I have looked at the videos you suggest and they are very helpful but whereas you seem to be able to be able to manually move the input (microphone) slider up or down, mine is just not responding. It is fixed at about two thirds of the way up.
@PeteJohnsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Yes, unfortunately some devices (but not all) have a static input slider, which has only been a recent change. You will need to just vary your distance from the mic in these cases.

Have you done a video on what to do when you discover you forgot to set the right key and now your audio tracks etc don’t match GB? Thanks!
@PeteJohnsMusic6 жыл бұрын
I have done a little bit along these lines, around how to transpose. It does get tricky if you have several tracks in a different key and then try to adjust the key of the song, but if you turn “follow song” off and then transpose up or down to match the key, it can work out. I think I might talk about this in one of the first three quick tip videos in this playlist - kzbin.info/aero/PLc8Xg_23Wa56sNYGISy5Iddo7ZTI5b4w-

Hey there. Different iPads have different mics and quality/location of mics so might not be faulty. If you locate the mics, you can ensure they are not blocked with any dust or crud using this method. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIOchoRmecd_otE

Your video on multi-tracking really helped me out! Plus! This one is great for my ideas that I put on my iPhone! Whew!
