awesome series. you really should release this as a downloadable or interactive course. At 25:00 you have the noise from the bit reduction, it's actually dither added by that plugin, you can turn dither off or adjust the amplitude there. I'm sure you left it in so you can show the gate in the chain, but just in case you (or anyone watching) didn't know, there you go.

Mike, I came upon your fantastic site through Paul Jenkin's "Complete Audiobook Course" on Udemy, he praises all he learned from you and I've enjoyed and learned a ton from many of your videos. Working my way through all of them now. This one's great. Gives me lots of ideas for editing workaround ways to do lots of voices in a novel, say 5 or more, without having to switch back and forth between multiple voices and keep them straight. Recording separate tracks and editing them together, though labor intensive, seems like one way to get around it. Thanks for your incredible talent and skill as a VO artist and teacher. I'm a former stage/tv/film actor who was active from the late 60s through the 70s, picking up the acting bug again at my shall we say slightly advanced age, and really grateful for all you are sharing here. I would hope and expect your career is zooming along in the three years since you recorded this. You've created an invaluable resource for people like me, and I echo the suggestion in another comment here that you make a course out of this...lots of really good stuff. I found a like-new Rode NT1-a here in Germany where I spend 2-3 mos/year, also a Focusrite 2i2, decent headset and using Reaper. it's coming together, now all I need is to work the rust off my cords and drag my old acting chops out of the closet.

Watching this workflow, I can't help thinking that voiceover software could be better. Is there any recording software where you _(or the sound guy)_ can tap a button after every section, and it marks the sections sequentially 1...2...3.... etc. Or press a different button and it marks it 2... 2a... 2b... 2c... Effectively allowing you to play/drag marked, pre-cut, sequences? Especially, allowing you to see multiple takes. This could also allow suitably marked scripts to auto-scroll. It would also ensure that marked clips in the DAW matched the marked dialogues in the script. For example... EL01 could be Elroys's first lines, EL02 his second line... EL02_b his second line take-2. Now we can identify all of Elroys's lines... and all of the takes for any given line. That'd be useful if you were going to process them differently... like, say, we're hearing Elroy through a telephone. Lightening and darkening takes to indicate preference as you preview them, would be good. Also, colour could be used to good effect to really group the re-takes together visually and identify characters. It just seems like the single-file approach, clicker, manual text scrolling, previewing, sorting and cutting - could all be a lot simpler if there was software designed specifically for voiceover work, rather than just general recording use... or, at least, a general recording suite that had optional features that support a supportive "voiceover" workflow with an integrated script window. Given how many people record to a script, music or a lyric sheet... it's surprising to see someone have to side-by-side their windows : / And, given that you are recording clearly identified sections, it's a shame you also have to scroll the text and click a clicker. There must be an easier way.

Just made a video with your help and found rather than having my script in word or any other editor I used Imaginary teleprompter. I have a habit of speaking too fast, so by setting the speed in the teleprompter it slowed me down, because if I speak too fast I run out of text before it scrolls LOL
@frankb86164 жыл бұрын
great stuff.. you know you can add markers while recording by pressing M. then you can split item at markers to make it easier. I also am looking into a script where you can color the markers at the same time. then you can choose a color for each character set keycaps up for each.. then you can create regions from markers .. then color items from regions in a custom action this would make your items colored for each character. haha you can go further by custom action to select all same color items and move to next track.. REAPER is crazy awesome

Hi Mike, You seem like an old friend, I’m trying to learn Reaper, and watch your videos over and over! You are a great teacher because you explain details and you TALK plain! I was in radio & tv for about 40 years producing spots and voice-overs, it’s a lot easier with an engineer sitting across from you. I am producing my own audio book, about halfway through recording 31 chapters. Running into a problem with Reaper creating additional identical items in the track -this happens after I make edits with splits. What am I doing wrong, or where can I fix this exasperating problem? I think it could be in saving, or some preset, but I haven’t been able to locate it. Some help would be greatly appreciated! Glenda H

These videos are fantastic. Thanks a lot for making them. Hey - in this video you show really good stuff. What I'm not sure of is how to then finish the track so I have it done. How do I get the FX into the final audio. Do we do a final render to get everything processed and done? Bounce to another track? Or what is the best way of doing that? Silly question in a way but coming from Audition, this is VERY different.

Hi Mike... great video. Quick question. When you record a voice over do you record only the "track input" and add all of the fx and processing later... or do you record the "track output" thereby adding all the fx and processing real time as the track is recorded? p.s. I loved the video on how to turn Reaper into a voice over machine as I am finally committing to the transition from Audition CS6 to Reaper. Tightwad that I am I refused to go with Adobe's Creative Cloud "rental plan"... what a ripoff... and I'm starting to hear that there are security concerns about CS6 which as you know hasn't been supported by Adobe for years now. Sorry for digressing... I look forward to you reply. Many thanks for all you do to support the voice over community;

Hey Mike. In Audition I have a keyboard shortcut set up for ripple delete, so I can just drag/mark the area I want to delete and do the shortcut and it will ripple delete. That saves me from having to split the clip twice before ripple deleting. Is there a way to do this in Reaper? I'm looking to switch because Audition has become far to unstable for my taste.

So… complete newbie here, setting up my 1st mic & DAW. While following along with your tutorial, I somehow closed the panel in the lower left corner of Reaper that has the meters, etc. I think I was trying to enlarge my window when it happened, if that helps. I’ve spent way too much time clicking around, trying to figure out how to restore that panel. I even deleted & reinstalled Reaper to try to resolve. Any ideas what that panel is called and how I can restore it?

I was searching for voiceover, but this wasn't what I had in mind although your ability is astounding. Is there any way to pause the first track, while recording the voiceover or Translation on the next track? So I have a long speech, that I can have whole, or I also cut into sentences. I would like to play the speech, and once the translator decides they will talk, their voice gate will automatically pause the speech. When translator is done, the speech continues playing. The translator I suppose would be a single recording, but the top track would insert the proper length silence where it paused. I trust I am sufficiently clear. Could someone point the way to accomplish this as automatically as possible? Thanks for your instructive videos.
