+Frank Buckley Thanks - I was trying to avoid the hesitant, rambling style typical of many KZbin Videos. I am a (secondary school) teacher - the idea is that my students can use the channel to recap/revise the techniques we look at in class, or catch up on the things they've missed.

I'm not an expert in LibreOffice (I made the video for my students who don't have Microsoft Office at home), but two possibilities spring to mind: - macros are disabled on the other PC as some sort of security measure - the other PC has a different version of LibreOffice You might, however, be better doing a web search than asking me.

@@advanced_ict Actually it's all good, thanks! I did trial and error and found out that i need to save the file under .ods even if all users use libreoffice- I usually just use .xls so that excel users and libreoffice users are able to view the sheet. But awesome video, thanks for helping me out how to create macros

I recorded a macro by typing it instead of using the mouse. I did it in LibreOffice Text, Saved it with a name. Then, I tried to assign that macro to a push button in a LibreOffice spreadsheet, but I couldn't fin the macro to be assigned. I'm still learning about macros. Can you please tell me what am I doing wrong. Thank you.
@advanced_ict
@advanced_ict 8 жыл бұрын
+musicaman68 I'm not entirely sure what you mean, there - are you saying that you wrote the macro as a text document? You need to go to Tools / Macros / Organise Macros and put it in there. An alternative option would be to start recording a macro, then stop and edit it, pasting your code over the top.
@musicaman68
@musicaman68 8 жыл бұрын
+Computing and ICT in a Nutshell Yes, I tried that, thank you. Since, I am still learning I want to know if this macro created in Excel would work in LibreeOffice 5. All I want is to assign the macro to a push button. Recording the macrois my issue. Here is the macro: Sub Button2_Click() Worksheets("Calculations") .Range("A2:B70") .Calculate With Worksheets("Draw") Range("C7") .Calculate Range("E7") .Calculate Range("G7") .Calculate Range("I7") .Calculate Range("K7") .Calculate Range("M7") .Calculate End With End Sub

This helped, thank you. However, as I first tried recording a macro I just used my mouse to click the things I wanted recorded, and after saving this macro nothing happened. I found that the Calc documentation says to use keyboard keys in recording. I studied a bit of Calc's keyboard shortcuts to select specific columns of numbers in my sheet and tried recording the macro again, this time using just keyboard keys...(First, move right cursor button to select the top cell of a column of numbers, use CTRL-SHIFT-DOWNARROW repeatedly to select the cells in that column, then use CTRL-SHIFT-4 to change the format of the selected cells to Currency, then continue for all the columns I want to show as currency) . I saved it so it was not tethered to a single sheet (MyMacros), and then opened up another sheet to test it out. It works now! It quickly repeats the keyboard strokes I recorded and gets all my numbers showing as currency so fast! I use this spreadsheet every month, and hated having to make the same changes every time. This makes it so easy!

Thanx for this video. I am learning Libra Office because Quattro Pro has become too unstable. But doing the above in Quattro Pro would have been about a 100th of the time. Can somebody combine the power and ease-of-use of Quattro with the stability and price of Libra Office

Yes, it's also dramatically quicker and easier in Excel - I'm not sure why, when the rest of Open/Libre Office seems to be similar to Office 2003 (i.e. before they made graphs, etc., worse in Excel), they made macros so different.

@advanced_ict

Kolyo Dinev Why not give it a try? Support for macros in LibreOffice isn't great - I think it's officially described as "experimental" - but it would certainly work in Excel, so it's worth a go.

Looking to create a toggle button. Press once and it'll organize by ascending, hit again it'll organize by descending. How could I do that?
@advanced_ict
@advanced_ict 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert in Libre Office macros, but I'd try to do something like this: i. record a macro that sorts into ascending order and puts the word "descending" into a cell. ii. record another macro that sorts into descending order and puts the word "ascending" into the same cell. iii. copy the code from one macro into the other and use an if... else... construct to check the value in the cell and perform the appropriate action.

Good video. Concise explanation but something else must be my problem. I keep getting this message "LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE and restart LibreOffice." I already have a JRE installed? What do I need to do to fix that? Also, how would I email it if the other person doesn't have a JRE? I have a macbook by the way.
@advanced_ict
@advanced_ict 6 жыл бұрын
I had that problem - it was to do with the version of Java; I think I had 32-bit Libre Office and 64-bit Java (or vice versa).
@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 6 жыл бұрын
I would have never thought of that. How would you find out which bit version of each? I have version 5.2 something of Libreoffice but it doesn't say. My macbook used to be 32 bit but it is 64 bit now and I've changed my jre since then. What would you do exactly? Oh yeah, I did manage to run a macro but not with a button. Can't seem to connect it.
@advanced_ict
@advanced_ict 6 жыл бұрын
If you go to Help -> About LibreOffice it will give the the version. Mine says Version: 6.0.3.2 (x64) - the x64 indicates that it's the 64-bit version. It's a bit more difficult to find in Java, but it's on the Java tab in the Java Control Panel (which I can access by typing Java into the Windows search box - I'm not sure how you find it on a Mac). You can install both versions to broaden compatibility. I can't guarantee that this is the issue, of course, but it's worth a look. I haven't used a Mac since the 80s, so I probably won't be much further help, I'm afraid.
@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 6 жыл бұрын
This is what mine says "Version: 5.2.3.3 Build ID: d54a8868f08a7b39642414cf2c8ef2f228f780cf CPU Threads: 2; OS Version: Mac OS X 10.11.6; UI Render: default; Locale: en-US (en.UTF-8); Calc: group" It doesn't say what bit version it is that I can tell. I think your right though because I have changed from 32 to 64. I updated my java but I don' remember if I updated libreoffice also.

I use Excel at work, in Windows 10, and I definitely think it's a lot harder to change the text on a button in Excel. You right click and there is an option to change the text, but when you do that you can't see what you are doing, you type and do things, but nothing seems to happen, so it's a guess work, because even if nothing seems to happen, things happens, you just can't see it until you get out of the button to see the result, which then may or may not be what you tried to do. Or maybe I'm doing it wrong. Every time… These days I just enter the name in a cell and let a macro copy it into the button… If I have more than one button, I first need to make another macro to see which button is which, because there is no way (as far as I found out) to see that information about a button in Excel. If I'm wrong, please let me know how to do it. It would make my life at work slightly easier…

If you right-click the button so that you see the handles on the corners, and then double-click, you can edit the text on the button.

There is a reason that the macro recorder isn't there by default. If you do anything with it, even so slightly more complicated that what you did in the video, your macro just won't work unless you fiddle with the code, so it's often easier to just write the code from scratch. I personally never use the macro recorder and as long as it is as crappy as it is, I just won't. It's more headache than useful. That's my opinion anyway. Excel's macro recorder is slightly better, but I have had some funny issues with that too. I remember once, I recorded a macro and when running it, it stopped at one line, telling me there's an invalid command. I removed that line and the macro worked, but why did the macro recorder add an invalid command to the code in the first place? It didn't seem to do anything anyway, since the code worked well without it.

The video is aimed at UK secondary school students, so they're only doing simple things, but you're right - the LibreOffice macro recorder is a bit flaky. But the Excel one is there by default either, is it?

Because it appears to be based on Office 2003, I actually think that it's better in some ways - the way graphs are inserted in Calc is better than Excel in my opinion, because it asks you want you want. Base is no match for Access, though.
