I do love the default classic looks of LibreOffice. I never really liked the ribbon interface that was introduced in Office 2007 and stuck with 2003 for the longest time, before moving to OpenOffice and then LibreOffice. It has served me well ever since. I don't do fancy stuff with macros in Calc, but following good practices to correctly format my text documents and they do look the part and there aren't any compatibility issues. Most compatibility issues I've come across through the years have been due to improper formatting from other users.

For me the most annoying thing is color. I have had issues where my formatted Table and PivotTable would just look all messed up when I put it into LO. Unfortunately, I work with a lot of document for a lot of users, so it has to work with what people expect them to work - so MS Office and/or Google Sheet. One of the biggest blocker is that I can't expect docx and xlsx files to look right in the MS Office people use and ODS files confuses people (especially on mobile as they try to open it from WhatsApp - where we often send files that don't need to be sent from email). It's just not worth the hassle for me.

I've been using OpenOffice and the later on LibreOffice over decade for my own needs (including all school and thesis work). While the menu layout usability has always been bit hit or miss and UI hasn't ever looked that appealing it has been a great tool to get my tasks done reliably: though I haven't ever had to exchanged word documents between MS Office users, which might explain the good experience I've had. One less mentioned area where the Open/LibreOffice shines even compared to MS Office is how it handles localization: the MS Office locales on countries which use comma as decimal separator can be a nightmare. When using a local with comma as decimal delimiter Excel cell scripting parameter separator IS NOT comma but semicolon and yes, this does break compatibility! (also I could go on how wonky the Excel CSV import is with locales and encodings, but that's a whole different can of worms) The usual advice I've seen that if you want to use MS Office products in your native language: just don't unless it happens to be en_US.

@thieftheodore I'm a 35 year old teacher (so it's not like I'm some college student linux fan that tries to convert people all over the place) and we work with documents quite a bit at work. I used to think like this too for the longest of times, but at some point I realized that the problem isn't that a particular file needs to be worked by many people (and microsoft office users) but that most people are really clueless on how to use a computer. I mean, here in Greece (and I guess probably everywhere else as well) most people can't get through their skull that pdfs are for sharing files with other people, while and doc/odt files are for editing. Simple as that. They just share averything in doc format ("just in case"...) and of course many times it's gonna look attrocious on someone else's computer, sometimes even if you're both using microsoft office, (if you're on different versions). The thing is we all aren't obligated to use the exact same office suit, or have the same fonts installed on our computers. If you want me to send you a file just to read something (say a student test or some lesson notes), I will happily do so, but it's gonna be a pdf so that it looks exactly how I expect it to look in your pc. If you want to edit it, I will happily send you an odt converted to doc but from that point on excuse me but you have to learn how to change a goddamn font and don't expect things to magically look how you expect them to look when they are not supposed to. I expect that there are gonna be lines of work where this is simply not possible, but let's not kid ourselves, in many cases (if not most) we are only torturing ourselves playing "the office tech support guy" because of computing illiteracy and our colleagues refusing to learn a fucking new thing when they're required by the times we live in. You simply can't be working with documents for a living and refuse to internalize such simple things. Edit: The fun fact is that people my age, tend to get what I'm saying. Most of the times I don't have problems with them. The people that act like immovable mountains are the older colleagues, like around 45 and upwards.

I have to admit that I try to avoid word processors and generally office suits as best as I can (as an Emacs user, using a word processor seems only marginally better that having to use an electrical type writer), but if I must, Libre Office seems to be both more powerful and more hackable. I mean, in LibreOffice you can use Regular Expressions in the standard search dialog (a thing which is hard to achieve in MS Word even when using macros!), and you can easily prettify the XML output so the resulting files become actually readable and editable in a real text editor. Sadly, you cannot savely edit a .docx file in LibreOffice, because all the finer details of the layout tend to get messed up (which is not, by the way, LibreOffice's fault. Although the docx format is an ISO standard, it is apparently MS which does not implement it correctly, so that we get the impression that the other programs do it wrong.) This is, by the way, the only reason that I still keep a VM around with Windows 10 and MS Office 2016...

The tab interface is easy to use. You just click a tab, find the icon that looks like what you want to do. Or: just press Alt Q, and type what you need to do. I only remember a few things I do manually, but for those the tabbed view makes it easy to do as it's easy to click the icons or memorize the Alt command sequence. In comparison, finding stuff in LO takes a long time, especially when they don't surface sensible "often-used stuff" and have decent command searcher a la MS Office and Google Sheet.
@little_forest3 ай бұрын
@@FengLengshun Well, what is combined in each tab, does not make sense, so if you look for a specific thing that you dop not know where to find it, the LibreOffice menu is structured in a way that you have a chance of finding the functionality, I do not in the tabbed view, even though I have worked with it in the past past. So it really does not matter whether it is tabbed or standard menu, as long as the structure and organization is logical enough. To find sh*t in MS office products, I need to use an internet search, not so with LO. And again: even though I am used both.
@FengLengshun3 ай бұрын
@@little_forest Why would you need an internet search? Just use the command searcher at the top of the window (Alt Q). As for me, I grew up with MS Office so it's more annoying trying to make sense of LibreOffice's logic for menu. Google Sheet has been better because they don't have as much and properly groups sub-command. It is pretty subjective, though these days I just use command searcher when it's not something I need to do all the time.

Although this workaround achieved the desired result, it was a bit of a pain having to do this, especially since it's very easy to paste multiple screenshots with each one below the one above in Microsoft Word.

Only three minor issues with LO Writer so far: 1. It doesn't save vertical text orientation in text boxes when transferred to MS Word. You have to reset the orientation manually. This is a pain when you have several pages with vertical text boxes. 2. The procedure for hiding text is complicated, and cannot [at least easily] be assigned to a command key. The best [clumsy] workaround is to select a block of text to be hidden, then check the "hidden" option for the characters, and use shift-ctrl-Y to repeat the operation for the next block. Obviously you have to go back to character formatting again if you interrupt this process by using some other command. 3. Lo has no way to display unique 128-type barcodes or QR-codes automatically in a mail merge. You have to convert the codes individually, which defeats the purpose of mail merging.

The biggest issue i have experineced is that libre office does not have the same feature set as ms and ofthen the way to get to a result is very diferent and becouse ms office has a monopoly All training ij college is on MS office if you want to use libre office your on your own
@SenileOtakuАй бұрын
If the college is teaching you to ONLY use a specific package, rather than teaching general concepts transferrable across multiple packages, they are doing you a GREAT disservice. You should be learning how to adapt concepts to other scenarios, otherwise you haven't learned anything at all.

the dark theming is my only thing I dislike with Libreoffice - very poor clarity. selecting Elementary icon theme mitigates this somewhat. but it needs to be improved (a few more shades of grey). For me the only upgrades needed are ms fonts installed, the word spacing and elementary icons. tabbed view doesn't do it for me at all. i wish i knew this stuff a few years ago - i did some consulting on my own and was determined to use linux only (which I did) - but I did have some formatting issues (probably the spacing item here). wasn't the end of the world but added some time when going back and forth with client on reports.

Why is it that open-source software is always the opposite of user-friendly? Isn't the point of the open-source philosophy that everyone should be able to use it? In that case, you'd think that open-source programs should be MORE user-friendly than their for-profit competitors. But still, every open-source program I've used has a UI that looks like it was designed in '80s and a UX that actively makes your workflow worse. What's up with that?
@MichaelNROH3 ай бұрын
It's mostly that many developers are not good designers. And for those that are it's often complex coming into a project that late in development

I can understand but if the UI is too familiar, they may get sued by a proprietary software company. As they are mostly run by NGO like the document foundation fighting a company like Microsoft is suicide .
@SenileOtakuАй бұрын
I don't know about that. The MSWindows UI looks like crap. Unless you're using GNOME Desktop as your example. Then yes, GNOME looks like crap too, and is severely ugly, unusable, counterproductive, and user-hostile.
@theseal66812 ай бұрын
Works for me since i only used pirated ms office 2003 and the ui was really easy to move to 😀

I've used LibreOffice for many years, but one thing that really irks me is the stupid way it implements page numbering starting from something other than 1, or changing from one style (e.g. i, ii, iii, iv) to another (1, 2, 3). It's hidden in format -> paragraph -> text flow. You have to insert a page break and then select a page style and, finally, you can choose a page number to start numbering from. This really all needs to be in one dialog, not buried in the depths.

my issues is with compatability with other users , most of my classmates basically use windows and microsoft office but for me as a linux user this does not work well , mostly with text moves or appears differntly

8:24 why would you show onlyoffice and wps office when talking about "more restrictive" office? I would argue that onlyoffice is simmilar in terms of features (some things works better and some are little worse than libreoffice) and wps office is basically full clone of ms office (note though that you should use it via wine (bottles or something) if you want new features since linux version is outdated; wps office is also closed source and chinese so there is that)

I really hope that libre office will get a UI overhaul so it looks a little nicer.

Don't expect much from it. Open source apps usually use gtk or qt and both toolkits are not great for these types of programs. Krita is ugly, GIMP is ugly, LibreOffice is ugly. The only way to make a usable and great looking application is to use custom GUIs. OnlyOffice is a good example and it doesn't use gtk or qt.

It needs a color palette update and more modern looking default icons in my opinion. This is the main part that makes it look "dated".

I've never used Libre office (I'm definitely gonna use it in the future) but always see people complain on its appearance. But if you can customize it to have the ribbon interface, customize the content for the tabs and even download icon and color themes, then whats really the problem?
@MichaelNROH3 ай бұрын
Some complain about some functionalites like Power BI integration and some table types, but globally speaking, it's only a fracture of people who actually use that. With some elbow grease, LibreOffice can also support these things with maybe some different solutions but it's just not widespread enough for big companies to jump on it yet
@albertxion5133 ай бұрын
People really only complain about appearance because it looks awful on windows.

the only problem i have with lowriter is how badly screwed up the formatting gets whenever a professor forces .doc submissions (not even .docx and definitely not .odt) and opens the document in ms word 2003... page numbers: gone math formulas: gone cross-references and captions: gone pictures: splattered all over the page don't get me started on those mostly blank pages with just a single word from the preceding paragraph and in the end, i'm the one blamed for submitting an "incomplete" document the same happens whenever i have to print my document outside of its native software on my laptop. even ms word 2021 can't figure out the .odt format yet
@arthurdefreitaseprecht26483 ай бұрын
@@nonk123 yes, but this is basically a problem imposed by word, they has to be legally obliged to deal with odt recently, otherwise they would still ignore it. To print I recommend always using PDF.

i was initially wanna switch completly to using libreoffice , but it was just impossible , so basicly why in th work we use VM access to windows machine to work whitch are not something i can change , its actually the decision of the bank i working with , and they have also a office licence too so basicly everything is there using office , basicly simple task without using macros did happen to do just fine using libre office as transition to me , but when it come to macros , i did just learn they completly not work since VB et basic is not the same , even the math calculation stuff dont work always if there a bit complicated passed from microsoft office to libreoffice ,... so i can only try to use libreoffice on the regular basic stuff and keep office for those tidious matter of compatibilty with my work

Main disadvantage is that it renders .docx files differently. So, if you'll share perfectly formatted file in LibreOffice it would be different in ms office.

The Mac version of Libre Office writer is basically unusable with the Magic Mouse. Writer has a stupid horizontal scroll bar that couldn’t be turned off, which is horrible for the Magic Mouse because accidentally horizontal scrolls could be easily triggered. Pages and Word never had that stupid horizontal scroll.
