I don’t see it mentioned often, but the guitar tone of System of a Down’s Toxicity & Steal This Album still blows my mind all the years later! Just a massive wall of crushing guitar tone, highlighted especially in Aerials and Mr. Jack. Rick Rubin, Andy Wallace, and David Schiffman really knocked it out of the park with those albums. And I love the fact that they aren’t nearly as dry as Rubins other albums that he’s produced; they really have the perfect amount of air, and room to really breath properly🤙

For modern metal: Killswicth Engage, Nickelback, Nightwish, Evegrey. Most of Fredrik Nordström, Andy Sneap and Sacha Paeth produced albums also sound fantastic.

For the majority of his career, early stuff aside I find Steve Stevens guitar tones to be absolutely wonderful from Nylon, Steel Acoustic, Gritty Blues, Hard Rock n Roll to his Metal tones... amazing truly!!

Great video and thanks to Adam for sharing his “secrets” how to get those amazing guitar tones. Maybe it’s a great idea to make part 2 of this video where you show how to get great guitar tones by using only virtual amps and in the box processing. This is what I enjoy so much about Warren’s video’s / tutorials. He gives attention to people using analog gear, people who are completely in the box and people who use the hybrid system. I have learned so much from his video’s that I have decided to sign up for the PLAP Academy some years ago. I will wait for part two of this video 🎸🎵

For years I always record a DI. Because since IRs are available, I nearly always find the need for tone shaping, and changing IRs is the most natural sounding, easy way to do just that.

Just wanna know if I'm following right... Record a dry DI track first, and when you're re-amping that dry track, use that time to dial in the tone? That's really really cool

That’s right, that’s what I do so that I have some clarity of mind whilst getting the sound right. Once the sound is perfect, I can then record live with that setup if I want, or continue to run reamps depending on the task needed

This is funnily enough the kind of thing I would do and pretty much the way I would do it if I had the gear you had and if I had the time , and one day I will. Great stuff man you’d make a fine compadre I’d love to work with in the studio and make a mad rock metal album. Can you tell me what it is that is making your waveform coloured in that way in reaper friend ? Is it a Color theme or some option I don’t know about?

Are you doing separate performances for the left and right tracks? Would that not be the best way to have a wide full sound?

Yes I am doing separate for left and right, that’s pretty much a standard these days for rhythm recording. This video is about chasing the tones rather than that aspect

Nickelback unironically has the heaviest guitar tones next to me. This is a good overview on how to come up with a great guitar tone. I prefer amps, cabs, mics and mic preamps, but this works too.
@Spoofaged
@Spoofaged 2 жыл бұрын
They had a new song come on octane today riding home from work and I was like "damn, Nickelback is kinda heavy".. I didn't say it out loud of course, but in my head I was jamming along lol.
@kronabus199a
@kronabus199a 2 жыл бұрын
Nickelbacks production is fuckin’ stellar, regardless of what some may want to say about their music, generally speaking. The guitar tone is absolutely MASSIVE, and so are the drums. The opening to Follow You Home is a great example of this. Huge galloping drums, followed by that throaty guitar tone… just way better than it has any right to be lol
@Spoofaged
@Spoofaged 2 жыл бұрын
@@kronabus199a that San Quentin song they just dropped is all kinds of thick and meaty. I Chads voice hit puberty lol. It does sound a lot like many other Nickelback songs, but production was definitely on point. Thinking about it now that you guys mention it, they did always have good production, but the new track has a heavier feel to it all around
@kronabus199a
@kronabus199a 2 жыл бұрын
@@Spoofaged yup, agreed! And yeah, their production has always been pretty dialed, especially on All the Right Reasons & Dark Horse. Hell, they were layering live amps with Amp Farm back before using amp sims was really a thing on studio records. Mutt Lange and Joey Moi really nailed the larger than life sound of those two records for sure 🤙

Honestly I did not hear super difference between a studio pro DI track and the raw track of my own old external soundcard's guitar port. But I can be very wrong - that's why it is important to do A/B blind tests. I can be convinced.
@cbaldeon
@cbaldeon 2 жыл бұрын
The main difference is going to be the floor noise of your external soundcard. I also recorded with an external soundcard and when I bought an audio interface, I noticed that the new recordings where way cleaner than the ones recorded using my external soundcard. If you are going to use a clean guitar, maybe you are not able to notice the noise, however if you distort that signal, you are going to increase the noise.

Awesome Vid Adam. :) Once you have spent so much time dialing in that tone, why not take IRs from the 4 individual signal paths first, then one more for the sum of the 4, then you have them when you need them no matter what. Just a thought. Cheers :D

You lost me on this video. Most people looking for ideas on how to get a bigger guitar tone don’t have the time, space or money to obtain all the gear and configurations you’re demonstrating in this tutorial. And if they did wouldn’t they already have established their desired tones? From the title I was hoping you would demonstrate how to get big tones from interface hi z input to in the box amp sims.
