Never thought about bringing down the low ends before the plug-in. Great idea and information in this video.

Anyone questioning an eq plugin before the amp has clearly never heard of numerous guitarists using an EQ pedal or OD before an amp, its basically the same thing, just shaping the signal before it hits the amp. It also makes the amp react differently I do it when using the cali suite as that can get far too bassy and flubby easily so i starve it of those frequencies up front

Thanks for some great pieces of advice in regard to using the EQ plugin before the amp sim. My main guitar has so much low end in standard tuning, and now seeing it in an EQ helps me understand a majority of my muddy-sounding tracks when I don't high pass it directly at the source before the amp gets the signal. I've struggled with trying so many things to reduce the low end of my signal, and after watching and liking your video, I can now hear much more refinement and clarity, and that was just on a first attempt without any serious refinement. My amp sims always sounded flat, a bit lifeless and conflicted with my bass tracks, even making EQ changes to help the guitar and bass fit better in a mix. Now, with this method you've illustrated, the guitar sounds so clear and I'm using way less gain than I felt I needed in the past. Excellent work, sir!

Honestly, I watched a video a few years ago and some dude talked about using an EQ plugin with an amp sim, and he was like "make sure to put it BEFORE" the amp. So, I always thought that was the standard way to do it. I never really understood why, exactly, tbh. Like, it kinda makes sense to me that it's probably just better to do it before it hits the amp - like, rather than fixing a mess after it's happened, easier to prevent it happening in the first place. But ultimately I completely agree whatever sounds good to you is it. I've used amp sims on drums cause I think it sounds good...lmao... so yaknow, I wouldn't critique someone else's EQ placement. But yeah, it makes sense if you can add in more bass on the amp. I'm not sure if it's a case of taking it out, only to add it back in again. Or maybe it sounds better that way because the EQ on the amp is doing its own specific thing.

Really awesome! Very informative! I don’t know if I can agree with you to use a compressor for the DI Since it kills the dynamics of the original signal IMHO Maybe something like the C4 Andy Sneap trick on the DI might be enough? Love your work!
@JeremyFoxMusic
@JeremyFoxMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Compressor is certainly optional, especially if you’re not doing a lot of chugging in low tunings. If you are, you’ll just want to use something that will tame the low woof during chugs that ring out. Whether it’s a compressor or not really doesn’t matter, just don’t let the woof destroy your low end. 🤘

Badass video! Just subscribed. Any additional tips for dialing in a crushing sound like that but on an 8 string? Also would the Plumes OD work as a replacement for the fortin grind?
@JeremyFoxMusic
@JeremyFoxMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! The process should be very similar on an 8 string. Regarding the Plumes, it just depends on the tone you’re after. The Fortin pedals are designed for low tunings, which is why they cut so much of the lows and boost a ton of upper-mids and highs. The Plumes, in my experience, doesn’t have that same effect. It will push a hotter signal into the amp, but you likely won’t get the same level of tightness in the low end that things like the Fortin Grind or Airis Effects Brutal Boost can provide out-of-box. You can compensate for that with the pre-EQ like I show in this video though. That all being said, this doesn’t mean the Plumes isn’t good for low tunings. It’s just going to result in a different tone, which might be more what you’re looking for. Hope that helps. If I ever get my hands on an 8 string, I’ll do an updated version of this video for that! 🤘

Dude! That issue with pre-eq DI was my butthurting moment for many times and I thought I was the only one who does that shit alone. Ps. Do you use quad cortex as a DI BOX?😅👍🏻

Great vid, question though : I see that you try to get your guitar signal as close to clipping as possible without actually clipping, would you do the same again to record clean guitars? Or just go with the gain staging settings you have already set for your distorted rythm guitars? Do you feel the need to start the gain staging over if you're recording clean elements in the song? Thanks!

Good question. I don’t usually change anything for the input signal going into the Audio Interface once it’s dialed in to handle my loudest/hardest playing. There may be times when you need to increase it a bit because of a very soft/quiet part but I’ve not really ran into that myself with the stuff I play/write. Thanks for watching! 🤘

Ok,,, thanks for this video that really made my tone better using NDSP plugins... BUT, gain staging that way (just before clipping) make me think of that -18dbfs everyone is talking about etc. To be more to the point, i had to crank up my Gain on my interface from 19Db up to 29Db. Maybe o understood something wrong about the -18dbfs. So, thanks again for this great video Jeremy!

Yeah, I’ve seen all sorts of stuff about what you’re “supposed to do”. I found that by using what I showed in this video results in the best signal hitting the plugins, which gives you more control over the resulting tone. If you’ve got a weak signal coming in, you’re gonna have to work harder to get a good tone. What I like to say is, do what provides you with the results you’re looking for. Nothing other than that matters. Thanks for watching 🤘

Nice job. I have yet to put an eq in front of the amp sim but I will definitely try this. Especially when you have so many guitars, every one has a different tone so this should be very helpful.
