For the first time in its history, Yamaha Recording Custom Series snare drums are available in a variety of Brass, Stainless Steel & Aluminium with sizes that compliment all performance styles. After repeated evaluations of our design by Steve Gadd, we have created a ground breaking new range of snare drums that is now available now at your Yamaha Drums Dealer.
In the following video Yamaha Artist Steve White sits down in the studio to compare the individual sound characteristics of each snare drum.
Stainless Steel:
The 1.2mm Stainless Steel models are available in 2 sizes: 14"x5.5" with 20 strands (RLS1455) and 14"x7" with 25 strands (RLS1470), both equipped with 2.3mm Dyna Hoops. The steel version is a very sensitive and versatile rock drum with cutting sound.
Brass:
The 1.2mm Brass Snares are available in 3 sizes: 14" x 5.5" with 20 strands (RRS1455), 14" x 6.5" with 25 strands (RRS1465) and 13" x 6.5" with 20 strands (RRS1365). All models are equipped with 2.3mm Dyna Hoops. Yamaha Brass snares are known for their warm ring.
Aluminum:
The 2 Aluminium models are available in 14"x5.5" with 20 strands (RAS1455) and 14"x6.5" with 25 strands (RAS1465). Both models have a 1.2mm Aluminium shell and 3mm Aluminium Die-Cast Hoops. The Aluminium drums tend to be slightly drier than the other shells, so you hear every nuance of you playing.
New Center Bead:
To date, Yamaha’s snare drums have traditionally had the metal center bead on the interior of the drum. However, we have taken the step of fixing the center bead to the outside of the drum to produces a more open sound than our conventional drums, for crisp, articulate performance.
Steve Gadd´s Choice: 14” x 5.5” Steel Snare:
The new Recording Custom Series 14” x 5.5” Stainless Steel snare drums include Steve Gadd's choice of 10-strand snare wires for further sensitivity producing a more natural tone with greater dynamics.

Really love aluminum. I’ve got an older Yamaha Japanese 6.5 in aluminum, and it looks like they are still rockin it. The throw off looks excellent as well.

GREAT video. Not usually a fan of steel, but that 5.5" x 14" sounds KILLER.

Excellent comparison. I have listen to a ton of these videos trying to figure out which Recording Custom snare to buy. This one has me convinced on the 5.5 x 14 brass model. Thank you!!

Good representation of Yamaha's new line of metal shell snares. I like that the 5.5 depth is still being offered. If only Yamaha would make 8 lug versions.

awesome video! the recording quality (mic setup etc.) was perfect, really the first ytvideo i found that showcased the different characteristics of the shells. wood was missing thou. also you could for example pick one shell material and make a comparison with die cast and wood hoops... also different sizes.... so much work but i tell you i would pay for that video!

I have YRC 14x5,5 Brass snare drum. It's brillant snare - sound is so great, so explosive. It is also very sensitive instrument - I can play silently and loud, according to need. Ghost notes are very selective and audiable. And it looks beautiful. :)

For starters, play the same type of cadence (less the DCI schtick) across all of the featured products and demo the drums consistently. For example, why play snares-off with just one drum? Why no side-stick comparison? Seriously, with very little effort, this showcase can be much more edifying.

I think it was a really well-rounded demo. Solo snare work was great to hear the range of the snare in question, then a solid groove was a handy way to compare each one to the others.

And Ludwig has drums made in Taiwan as well. You can get a Taiwanese BB or USA BB. I doubt you would hear or notice the quality workmanship if you didn't know where they were made. It's all about quality control where ever they are made. I had Supraphonic that the finish kept coming off. Quality control?
