I also heard this higher pitch with this system, especially when played with the tip of the stick, and really liked it! But, i' m not so sure, that i would prefer it to the standard mics, i guess both ways have their advantages in sound, depending on the band setting. The practical advantages by the way are obvious to me. Not having to think bout hitting a mic, and how to place the mics...

I make sure to use a solid bar between the kick and the ride because the ride resonates the drum, and it works like an amplifier for bottom end. I also hang up cymbals in the ceiling of small rooms to genetate reverb. Sympathetic resonance accounts for more than you think, and it's nuanced. With a cymbal on a stand, you can really tell the difference in a floor, and what it's made of.

Using cymbals for reverb is beyond interesting to me! That's a fantastic idea. Going to have to try that!

Thank you for the comparison, saw them under Benny Greb's cymbals and had to google them. With the CRS they sound way more open, but the use of Cympads on the normal stand cuts of highs and sustain, that's why there is a difference in pitch.I use Cympads quite a lot in situations where the cymbals are to harsch and too long. Thanks, Benno! I did a follow up video where I use a felt pad, cympad, and the CRS to show the differences in the sound. At the time I did this video I didn't even consider that I was using a cympad because of how long I had been using them. It just became the norm for me. Hopefully the follow up video is a better example of what you can expect when adding the CRS to your setup. Thanks again, Benno! Appreciate your comment. :)

Listening on a home TV, the difference is clearly audible. The stock stands mute highs that ring out with the CRS. (Not that I want more highs from my cymbals. I don't find the extreme ends of the spectrum useful. For me, the extra lows are mud and the extra highs are future hearing loss.)

They are not cheap but I got one for the cymbal stand attached to my bass drum mount on my Catalina Club kit. Before CRS hitting the bass drum you could hear the cymbal vibrate and hitting the cymbal there was a sound that the bass drum mic was picking up as the sound reverberated in the bass drum. After installing the CRS I am not hearing either sound. I believe it solved my problem.
@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Жыл бұрын
That's fantastic! In the follow up video I just released I mounted a cymbal stand to the bass drum and I noticed that when I was using a felt pad or a cympad that the vibration from the cymbal was making its way all the way to the bass drum pedal. The upper range of the cymbals frequency range had a clarity that wasn't there before. Similar to a tom mount bolted to the shell or a mount on the hoop or lugs. The cymbal is allowed to freely vibrate unrestricted producing a clearer tone. But that's what hearing Imho.

They definitely have a lot more sustain and a brighter/glassy sound. Plus, to my ears Paiste have always had that kind of sound to me. However, in recording it seems more and more that the cymbals are the hardest to control for mixing. Many use ribbon mics for that and EQ. If you can cut that out the source then that wouldn't be needed maybe. So it may not work for recording in some instances or music but i does add a beautiful sustain and top end. Maybe for darker sounding cymbals? Great video.

Interesting video, I'd never heard of them before watching this, from the comments they are expensive. To my ears, the ride cymbal was alot brigher with them fitted...which maybe you want, or maybe you don't. There definitely is a difference in sustain and pitch/clarity with those do-dads, the all important "but" would be is this attainable by other means as well? ie: rubber cymbal washers rather than felt, lighter cymbal stands etc? I remember using Aquarian cymbal springs in the early 80s with similar results in sound and sustain..These do-dads are impressive, but unless I received them as a gift, I'm not sure I'd shell out the dough.

Gavin Harrison is using them so i guess they are worth the investment :-) . Not sure i understand why you would increase the sustain of crash cymbals though. Usually you want them out of the way quickly in the mix . For a ride , this is different and the ride does sound richer to my ears . They might also reduce the risk of cracking cymbals if you are a heavy hitter or if you hit them wrongly .
@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Жыл бұрын
Indeed, if Gavin likes them who am I to argue? Haha. It's an interesting thing when you think about it. With the CRS in place it's really not increasing the sustain but rather allowing the cymbal to resonate as it was meant to. And I agree with you about the added benefit of reducing the risk of damaging the cymbal. A very nice bonus! :)
@patrickfouhy9102 Жыл бұрын
My wife bought me some of them for Chrstmas as well! haha. I've only played with them a little bit since getting them. Haven't had a chance to totally A/B them in terms of how they effect the cymbals themselves, but I have noticed that they do reduce the ring of the cymbal stands. Yes, cymbal stands to create sound, they are hollow tubes after all. They have also lowered the sympathetic vibrations to the cymbals. My toms are mounted to cymbal stands, so when I hit my toms there is always some energy making it's way to the cymbals, these have gotten rid of that. Granted, could anyone hear that anyway? Probably not. But I have done recordings where the vibrations of the cymbal stand did cause issues, and this would have been very helpful. *watching this at home, not on my studio speakers* - Watching your video, I certainly noticed that there was a dip in the lower frequencies, really cleans up the sound of the cymbal actually. I have that same cymbal I believe. (22" 2002) and when I record it I always do some cutting of the low end. This seems to do that naturally, so that's pretty cool.

Nice! Always great when we get gear for Christmas! I'm actually planning on doing a follow up video to show how much the CRS mount reduces the vibration when mounting a tom to a cymbal stand. It truly is a remarkable piece of gear. :)
@joshuadillon4396 Жыл бұрын
To me, at first I didn’t hear any sustain difference and still if there was it seems quite minimal in a mix. I did hear something in the comparison. The new system makes the cymbals sound brighter/ clearer. In this instance the 2002 series is already a pretty bright cymbal so do you need it/. Up to you. I would say one cool added benefit to this system is to be able to move your cymbal extensed arm over more but still use a tight angle because now you have more room between where the cymbal meets and it hanging down towards that extended arm.

Hi. Is the distance of over-heads the same between the two takes? I hear exactly the same differences through my studio monitors as you in this video, however, I'm using Zildjian L80s, and the booming and rumbling from the stands is making them unplayable, so I'm looking at the CRS to cut that down or, preferably, out completely. Riding on the ride right now quickly makes a droning low-mid sound which sounds like a tumble dryer running right next to me, it's absolutely horrible, and frankly, if I can't get rid of this, I'm quitting drums, because I've spent a fortune on cymbals, heads, and all sorts, to try and stop neighbours from complaining, and to try and make my acoustic kit as low volume as humanly possible, and all these VSTs sound miles better now, so, if this system doesn't work for me, my kit will go up for sale, because I'm too old and tired to be worrying about this any longer, lol! I'm just as surprised as you at how much of a difference it made. As far as hearing it in a recording, I suppose that depends on the music being recorded, the drummer, and the engineer.

There's a definite difference in brightness. couldn't tell much about the sustain, but logically I would assume that would increase as well. I don't foresee any increase in longevity for the cymbals, if you crash them, the edge will flex and the bronze will work harden over time resulting in cracks. it's inevitable. If you're after brighter tone, great, run these things or get different cymbals. But you'll never notice sustain changes since the music proceeding the hit will mask the sustain of the cymbal. It's gonna get drowned out by the rest of the kit anyway. A curious invention none the less.

Reading comment section on drum videos reminds me why us drummers are always the butt of every musician joke. We are such idiots in the most embarrassingly predictable ways. There was obviously a sonic difference. I am positive if you put a spectral analyzer on the screen we could see the muddy low end disappear from the CRS tracks… which explains the moronic comments stating the CRS “adds” high frequencies and clarity. The CRS isn’t “adding” anything. We simply aren’t hearing the muddy low frequencies. Whether that’s the intention of the CRS is immaterial. The CRS track sounds “record ready” or pre-EQ’d. That’s certainly a cool thing imo. Personally, I was hoping to hear examples of whether the CRS helps with sympathetic vibrations… particularly in situations of shared Tom/cymbal stands, racks, etc. I would definitely buy a product that reduces those bad vibes.

In any case, and generally speaking in "pop rock" music, cymbals are under-mixed, especially the hi-hat. On the other hand, your snare drum sound is a real killer... !

Thank you for your comment and the compliment on the sound of the snare! About CRS not making an obvious difference I have to respectfully disagree. To me the sound of the cymbal instantly sounds better. I'm able to hear the cymbal without anything getting in the way of the cymbals natural sound. How I mix them after I record depends on the track. Sometimes the only thing on the track, as far as percussion goes, is a cymbal. I need it to sound its very best and CRS helps with that. :)

@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad maybe should i try it ? Anyway, the difference should be on the ride cymbla, i guess...

Man... I prefer it without the CRS. Brightness is increased with CRS. That is just me. Either way, is a good tool to have in a studio.

I agree with you that it is a great piece of gear to have in the studio, also live for the added cymbal protection. :)

I hear the difference. My thoughts are that maybe they are working, but they are quite expensive. I have a drum set that has 2 rides, 5 or 6 crashes and 3 chinas. Can’t justify all of that money. Also they should aim at electronic drums, since usually everything is mounted on a rack, and cross-talking of cymbal pads and snare/tom pads happens all the time. This should avoid that to happen.

Wow, that's a lot of cymbals! That could get very expensive. Maybe one or two here and there over time? I'm lucky to only have to get a few more. I know they work well eliminating vibration when a tom is mounted on a cymbal stands. I'll have to check the CRS website to see if they mention anything about electronic drum applications.

For what I saw, they are not mentioning their product for that use.

Actually loosing some stick attack when using it.

Hmmm. I didn't notice that. I'll give it another listen with that in mind. Thanks for checking out the video! :)

The big difference I'm hearing is the wash of the cymbal. Myself, I prefer the sound without the gadget

Thanks, Tim! It's not for everyone. Totally respect your opinion. :)

A small piece of foam under each stand foot.
@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Жыл бұрын
That is a wonderful studio trick that I used to use all the time. Works live too. The CRS eliminates the need for that. Also, even with the foam under the stands the cymbals stands would still absorb the vibration from the cymbal. It just wouldn't go into the floor, as much. Sincerely appreciated your comment, Karl! :)

You hear the difference but for me not worth the price to buy them for my setups

There’s lots of recording studio hacks you can do to manipulate the source sound of cymbals or drums. Just have to find the right materials and experiment. For $80 a pop, I wouldn’t waste my time or money on this product
@RecordingDrumsWithBrad Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks for your comment. The studio hacks you mentioned are definitely valid. The CRS mount is a tool that can greatly reduce the need for those hacks. Saving time and money as well as potentially adding longevity to your cymbals is something that CRS brings to the table. And for me that is something to at least consider. Just my opinion.

Just a higher pitch with them.

Hi, thanks for checking out the video and for leaving a comment. Appreciate you taking the time. To my ear the cymbal breathes a bit more. It feels a little softer to play them too. The added brightness that you mentioned is really just the cymbals natural sound coming through without it being dampened down by the felt pad as well as the low rumble being removed that the stand normally adds. Thanks again! :)

I can't hear the difference

Hi Ben! Can I ask what type of speakers you are listening to the examples with?

I can detect a difference with my 69yr.old drummer ears.The thing is,it's not detectable to the untrained ears.For recording,it's definitely a big deal.

Eehhh not really that noticeable. Even under mics. Grab a basic eq and cut some lows and annoying highs and half that unpleasant frequency is gone for free. I've seen these things and never really got it. Also like the 80 different drum muffling things now. Piece of gaff tape or those stick hands from dollar store have always worked.

Thanks for your opinion. Totally appreciate your thoughts. I can say that hearing the natural sound of the cymbals without the stands getting into the mix has really been a game changer for me. :)
