Note that this is the fearedse(ghetto) way to record bass guitar so if you disagree on some part of this video then keep it to yourself or do your own goddamn video :D
Note that this video is considered to be more as a guideline on how to record bass guitar.
Hope it helps!
And if you record anything be sure to send it as a video response to this video!
Spread the word about Mel!

Ola, thanks for these clips. They are mega helpful for those of us producing stuff from home on a budget. Bass was an area I wasn't familiar with but I'll try this technique soon and see where it gets me. Certainly makes a lot of sense to HP/LP the bass in order to make it gel in the mix with the guitars. Keep up the great work! Loving the comedic presentation as well.

gods, these are the best tuts, so quick and clear, full of power tips. specially the compressor part. very practical. usually people love to obfuscate when it comes to compressors. so uncool. a compressor tut, touching on most mix elements would be sweet. thanks for sharing!

Lol. That's pretty much how it's done in heavier lower tuned tracks. Good straight to the point. And it works almost every time! Thanks dude. Btw the new S by solar guitars and basses are sick for the $. I think others are going to be really stepping up their game now.

@tango616 Because he is also using a seperate track of the bass just clean, so when you blend the 2 tracks it will sound way different than just listening to the distorted track by itself. You hear the crazy distortion but you still get the distinct tone of what is being played by the clean track.

Always thought about doubling the bass part in metal songs, never tried it this way. The gain just mixed a tad in with the clean bass sounds cool. Also being a 6 string player (not 7) I always wondered if I should try it to pound lows better. Now I have enough tracks to do it easy (I like to record outboard) went from 8 to 32. Not sure why but I always cut the vary bottom on bass tracks also, (I don't like the mud) but boost the mids some. But I do like the gain overdub or double track sound you got.

In my opinion, it's simply that the kick sits in lower freq. than the bass, try to slightly (slightly) boost the bass at 90 hz or so and the kick at 50hz or so, they will sound stronger in those separate freq. (hopefully). I also like to boost some treble for the kick so it has that "clicking" sound to it. the cymbals, around 3000 hz or so, or over that. The guitars and vocals, in between those low and hi freq. (these values or just off my head, play around to find the best sounding to you).

you can racord the bass exactly the same as the guitar (head-cab-mic-interface), but you cant put the thing through your head and then directly to the interface. ola uses vst's here, to simulate a distorted amp.
