Not only is this tremendously helpful, clear and practical, but unlike many other videos on KZbin you 'show' instead of 'tell'. That makes a huge difference to understanding. One of the best on this subject in my view. Thank you for making it.

I'm a "bedroom KZbinr" who only ever records in a very controlled environment and I feel I've done a great job of dialing my audio in. I have an opportunity coming up to film something "on location" soon and I really want to do it justice, and audio is the main thing I'm concerned about. I just wanted to say that this video was incredibly helpful, so thanks for taking the time to put it together! 🙂

I've been absorbing a few hours of YT videos to see if there is something I like to add to my current field recording setup. And then video came up ... An excellent overview of recording techniques and equipment and a real eye opener. Had this been the first video I had seen, I would have been outdoors recording all kind of audio, making notes and photos of the setup used. It's great to see the amount of detail you put in this, like blurring out the face of the lady next to her car @ 25:30 but @27:20 - the boom pole mic is already in view. The sun clearly shows the shadow of you and the boom pole. That's almost like seeing fighter jets fly by in a western movie 😁

I agree. That was a great example where the lav was not well positioned for the shot Later when she's in the sidewalk, the lav sounds good, she removes the lav, and puts it back, and it sounds blocked and muffled again. It just emphasizes her earlier claim that you always need to listen to the sound through the headphones, especially after making adjustments. Those might have been good opportunities for her sound guy to show them making adjustments before proceeding rather than pressing on with the video shot.

Great video. I've got the Shure MV88+. It's basically a mic for your phone, that comes with a stand that holds the mic right on top of the phone. I keep having issues with a hissing noise coming with recordings. You mentioned electronics causing a hissing noise, maybe that's my problem!

This was excellent. Really well thought through and presented. The only thing I found a bit off-putting is that the audio sounded a bit muffled to me, until you switched to the NTG2. I'm old, so maybe I need a brighter sound to get through the high pitch roll off of age, or maybe it's the design compromise inherent in making a mic as small as a lavalier, but for me the NTG2 had the up front presence that seemed lacking in the rest of the audio. This isn't meant as a criticism of the production, more as an observation, which maybe points to the individual nature of how we experience audio.
@GabrielsLogic

I'm 17 years old and i agree. The audio does appear to be muffled by the lavaliere. The shotgun gave crisper noise compared to it. Good observation.

Great video, 3 concepts of sound well explained. I just have only one suggestion to do, leave the lavalier mic above the lapel of your jacket, for clear sound, instead of under it, because the lapel works like a barrier for the sound captured by the mic. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your knowledge.

No, you’re not correct. It’s always finding a balance between audio quality and visibility. As a DP I would not want to see a microphone when not needed.
@Ioraek
@Ioraek 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, while it was clear and intelligible enough, it did sound quite muffled. I know lavs, especially with a windscreen, are ideally made as inconspicuous as possible, but I'd really be considering sacrificing the visual a little bit for better audio. Alternatively, maybe with a bit of EQing to get back some of the mid-highs it could stay under the jacket lapel.
